BHA
A preservative for the fat, not the dog
BHA is a synthetic antioxidant added to fat used in dog food. It slows rancidity during storage, helping protect the food your dog eats. It has no demonstrated antioxidant benefit inside the dog, and lifetime safety remains less certain than shorter feeding studies suggest.
Role in the food Does a job- What it is
- A manufactured antioxidant that slows the oxidation of fats and oils in stored food.
- Made from
- Tert-butylhydroquinone, dimethyl sulfate and sodium hydroxide
- Main job
- Keep fat from turning rancid
- Typical amount
- Not published
- Watch for
- Limited lifetime safety evidence in dogs
- Not the same as
- BHT
Straight answer
Is BHA safe for dogs?
Read BHA as a fat preservative
When BHA appears low on the list, look at the fat and the rest of the recipe before judging the food. It has a useful storage job but no proven health benefit inside your dog. If the unanswered lifetime risk bothers you, choose a complete food using another antioxidant.

What it is
How it is made
Chemical manufacturers make BHA for use as a preservative; it is not a food-processing leftover. They turn a starting compound into waxy flakes, mixed through fat or a liquid premix before feed is made.3
- 01 // Source Starting compound Tert-butylhydroquinone is the starting compound in the manufacturing route assessed by EFSA.
- 02 // Process Chemical reaction It reacts with dimethyl sulfate and sodium hydroxide, producing a mixture of BHA isomers.
- 03 // Process Purified and crystallized The mixture is purified with n-hexane, filtered and crystallized into flakes.
- 04 // Output Waxy BHA flakes The additive arrives as flakes, mixed into fat or a liquid premix for feed.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
98.5+
% BHA
The minimum BHA content specified for the dry additive. This is a concentrated preservative, used in small amounts rather than as a nutrient.
Why it is in the bag
Here to keep the fat fresh, not feed the dog
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
BHA is a preservative, not a nutrient. Makers add it to slow fat from turning rancid during storage, and US rules cap total antioxidants at 0.02% of the food's fat content, so very little goes in. That is why it sits near the end of labels, which run by weight. It gives the dog no nutrition and no proven antioxidant benefit; its whole job is protecting the fat.2,3,5,7
-
01
Slows fat oxidation
BHA dissolves in oils and slows the reactions that make stored fat rancid. A controlled test in ground dog food measured less oxidation after heated storage.2,3
-
02
Mixes through fat
Manufacturers dissolve BHA in fat or propylene glycol before blending. A liquid premix distributes the preservative through feed.3
-
03
Protects fat with little additive
The US limit is tied to the food's fat or oil content. That lets manufacturers protect fat across a batch while adding very little preservative.5
How much US rules cap total antioxidants, including BHA, at 0.02% of the food's fat or oil content, not 0.02% of the whole food.5
Our read // The claims
What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

BHA keeps kibble fat from going rancid
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A dog-food test used BHA at 0.02% of dry food and found less oxidation after 12 days of heated, open-pan storage. That dose exceeds the US ceiling calculated on fat content; performance in a sealed retail bag at a compliant dose remains untested.2,5

Brands say
Regulated BHA levels are safe for dogs

Evidence

EFSA judged 150 mg/kg of complete feed safe using limited evidence. The dog studies lasted 6 to 12 months, and EFSA identified adverse effects from 2,500 mg/kg. FDA's current reassessment focuses on human food, so lifetime dog safety remains unanswered.3,6

Critics say
BHA causes cancer in dogs
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

- Thin
- None
The cancer concern comes from tumors in rodents. In a 180-day beagle study using diets with 1.0 or 1.3% BHA, liver weight increased but stomach overgrowth was not found. No lifetime dog study resolves cancer risk at preservative doses.1,3,4

The 12-day dog-food test measured oxidation in food and enrolled no dogs. It supports a storage benefit, not improved antioxidant status or health in a dog that eats the food.2,3

What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoBHA adds no meaningful bulk or nutrition. It has a specific job: slowing fat oxidation during storage. Its small amount reflects how a preservative is used, not an attempt to fill the recipe.3,5
-
Q02
Does BHA mean cancer?
No proofRodents developed tumors after dietary BHA exposure, so the concern has a basis. Dog studies found no stomach overgrowth but lasted at most 1 year. A BHA line on a bag cannot predict cancer in your dog.1,3,4
-
Q03
Why is it near the end?
Tiny amountIngredients are listed by weight, and BHA is used in small amounts. Its place near the end tells you little about the quality of the fat it protects.5,7
-
Q04
Is BHA the same as BHT?
NoThey are separate preservatives with separate ingredient names. US rules count antioxidants together against the fat-based limit, so listing both does not give each one its own allowance.5
