Sweet Potato Powder

Dried sweet potato is starch, not a supplement

Sweet potato powder is sweet potato sliced, dried and milled into flour. It is about three quarters starch, so it adds carbohydrate, body and an orange color. In the small amounts a topper uses, its beta-carotene does little for the dog.

Straight answer

Is Sweet Potato Powder safe for dogs?

Read it as a carb, then look above it

In a topper, sweet potato powder usually sits mid to low on the list, near the flavorings and joint add-ins. Treat it as a little starch and color, not a vitamin dose. Judge the product by the protein listed above it and the calories it adds to the bowl.

What it is

How it is made

Sweet potato is a major food crop, and about half the harvest has gone to animal feed or the starch industry. Drying turns a perishable tuber into a flour that stores and ships like grain.1,5

  1. 01 // Source Sweet potato tubers Whole tubers from one of seven food crops grown at more than 100 million tonnes a year.
  2. 02 // Process Cleaned and sliced Tubers are cleaned, then shredded or sliced. Feed-grade chips are often treated with sulfur dioxide.
  3. 03 // Process Dried Slices dry in the sun or in hot air at 80°C or more. Hot air keeps more beta-carotene than sun drying.
  4. 04 // Process Milled Dried chips are ground to flour. In one study the flour had lost 16 to 34% of the fresh tuber's beta-carotene.
  5. 05 // Output Sweet potato powder A shelf-stable powder of about 86 to 93% dry matter, ready to weigh into a recipe.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

74

% starch

Average starch in dried sweet potato. It is a carbohydrate ingredient, with under 4% crude fiber and about 5% protein.

Starch 68.2-77.7%1
Total sugars 4-9.9%1
NDF 5.2-15.7%1
Crude protein 3-6%1
Crude fiber 2-3.7%1
Ash 2.4-7.1%1
Crude fat 0.5-2.1%1

Beta-carotene swings by variety. Three finished flours in one study held 3.6 to 18.8 mg per 100 g dry weight, and only one of the two orange varieties was high. Hot-air drying keeps more than sun drying.4,5

Why it is in the bag

Starch for body and color, in small amounts

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Brands add it for its starch. Dried sweet potato is about 74% starch on a dry basis, which gives a topper body, binds the powders and broth, and tints it orange. Labels list ingredients by weight, so when it sits low on the list, near the flavorings, the amount is likely too small to change the dog's nutrition. Its beta-carotene, up to about 19 mg per 100 g of orange flour, is a real but minor extra.1,4,7

  1. 01

    Starch for body and binding

About 74% of its dry weight is starch. Cooked with water, starch gelatinizes, which helps kibble expand and binds powders and broth into a topper.1

  2. 02

    Carbohydrate without grain

It supplies energy from a tuber instead of a cereal, which lets the food carry a grain-free label. In one trial its diet had less usable energy than corn or brown rice.2

  3. 03

    Color and a familiar name

One orange variety reached about 19 mg of beta-carotene per 100 g of flour, enough to tint the food. Owners also recognize the name on a front panel.4

  4. 04

    A cheap, abundant crop

It is one of seven food crops grown at more than 100 million tonnes a year, and about half the harvest has gone to feed or starch.1

How much One 5-dog digestibility test fed sweet potato at 25 to 100% of the ration. No source gives the amount a topper uses.3

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Low glycemic carb for steady energy

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 14-dog trial, corn and potato diets gave a higher glucose peak than a sweet potato flour diet. That was sweet potato as the only starch for 15 days. A topper sprinkle will not steady a dog's energy.2

  2. Brands say

Sweet potato is good for the gut

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 14-dog trial, the sweet potato diet raised fecal short-chain fatty acids and Faecalibacterium, which the authors read as better gut function. It was also the least digestible diet of seven, and no gut health outcome was measured.2

  3. Brands say

An easily digested carb for sensitive stomachs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The dog data points the other way. In a 5-dog test, protein and fat digestibility fell as sweet potato rose. In a 14-dog trial its diet digested worst of seven. Neither study used dogs with sensitive stomachs.2,3

  4. Owners say

Sweet potato in grain-free food causes DCM

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Potatoes or sweet potatoes were in 42% of the foods named in FDA's DCM reports, against 93% for peas or lentils. FDA says the reports cannot show cause, and no trial links sweet potato itself to heart disease.6

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No, it's starch

It is about 74% starch on a dry basis. The dog burns that for energy, and the recipe uses it for body. It does not replace meat, and it is not a fiber source either.1

  2. Q02

Is powder better than fresh sweet potato?

    Same food, drier

Drying brings it to about 88% dry matter, so it carries much more starch per gram than fresh. It keeps the same starch and sugars but loses 16 to 34% of the beta-carotene.1,5

  3. Q03

    Does it add vitamin A?

    Some, if orange

Orange sweet potato flour tested above 1,500 RE of vitamin A activity per 100 g, even sun-dried. Variety matters: three flours in another study differed about fivefold, and the label never names the variety.4,5
