The Royal Canin Breed Health Nutrition Line, Reviewed

51 recipes, read label by label

Breed Health Nutrition is built around breed names. Each recipe is sold for one breed and often one life stage, from Chihuahua Puppy to Great Dane Adult. The line has 51 recipes: 45 kibbles and 6 wet foods. Chicken appears in 44 of the 45 kibbles, pork in 9 and egg in 3. Every kibble contains grain. Peas or lentils show up in 18 kibbles and in all 6 wet recipes.

Kibble protein runs from 19% to 31% and estimated starch from 31.8% to 47.6%, so the figures change a lot from one breed recipe to the next. Compared with the 1,834 kibbles in our catalog, the line averages 25.8% protein against 26.9%, 39.3% starch against 37.4%, and 340 kcal against 395, all as fed. The wet foods average 6.8% protein, while the catalog wet average is 8.3%.

The trade-off: many recipes list brewers rice, corn or brown rice first, and by-product meals supply most of the animal protein. Owners who want a food named for their breed have plenty to choose from. Owners looking for high protein or low starch will find only a few fits, such as Poodle Puppy.

A GOOD FIT FOR
  • Owners who want a recipe sold for their dog's specific breed
  • Dogs needing fewer calories, with kibbles as low as 277 kcal per cup
  • Owners comfortable with grain, since every kibble contains it
WORTH KNOWING
  • No kibble is grain free. The French Bulldog Loaf In Sauce is the only grain-free recipe in the line.
  • Peas or lentils appear in 18 of the 45 kibbles and in all 6 wet recipes.
  • Estimated starch in the kibbles spans 31.8% to 47.6%, so the numbers vary widely by breed recipe.
