Solid Gold Lines, Reviewed

4 lines

Solid Gold divides its dog food into four lines. Three are meal lines sold as kibble and wet food: Barking at the Moon, Hund-N-Flocken, and Mighty Mini, which is sold for toy and small breed dogs. The fourth, Bone Broth, is a set of six toppers made to add to a meal.

The kibbles differ most in protein and estimated starch. Barking at the Moon kibbles average 41% protein and 21% estimated starch as fed, against catalog kibble averages of 26.9% and 37.4%. Mighty Mini sits near those averages at 28.3% protein and 36.8% starch. Hund-N-Flocken averages 24.5% protein and 43.3% starch and is the only line with grain, from brown rice and pearled barley. Barking at the Moon and Mighty Mini are grain free, and every Mighty Mini and Hund-N-Flocken recipe lists peas or lentils.

Who Makes It

Solid Gold is a dog and cat food brand owned by H&H Group, a Hong Kong-listed health and nutrition company. The brand calls itself America's first holistic pet food brand and says its recipes focus on gut health. Its lines include Hund-N-Flocken, Mighty Mini, Wild Heart, Green Cow wet food, and the nutrientboost range, which the company says uses a blend of superfoods and plasma. 1, 2, 3

Where It Is Made

Solid Gold says all of its dry dog foods, treats, and supplements and its canned dog foods are made in the USA. The company does not name its manufacturing facilities in its FAQ, and it does not say whether it runs its own plants. 4

History

Sissy Harrington McGill founded Solid Gold in 1974, and Hund-N-Flocken was its first recipe. H&H Group bought the privately owned brand in 2020 for an enterprise value of $163 million. At that time Solid Gold was based in the St. Louis area, and the brand now lists its address in Orlando, Florida. 5, 2, 6

Worth Knowing

Solid Gold says its only recall was in 2012, when it voluntarily recalled one batch of WolfKing and one batch of WolfCub dry dog food during that year's industry-wide salmonella recalls. The company says neither batch tested positive for salmonella. Solid Gold also says it is a brand of H&H Group, which it describes as a certified B Corp. 4
