Taste of the Wild Lines, Reviewed

2 lines

Taste of the Wild has two kibble lines here: Ancient Grains, with four recipes, and PREY, with three. Both are kibble only, so the two lines compare directly. Ancient Grains pairs named meats with grain sorghum and millet and has no peas, lentils or potato. PREY is grain-free and sold as limited ingredient. Each PREY recipe is built on one named animal protein, followed by lentils, dried tomato pomace and chicken fat.

Ancient Grains averages 29.8% protein, 16.5% fat, 34.8% estimated starch and 418 kcal per cup, as fed. PREY averages 28% protein, 15% fat, 36% starch and 412 kcal. Both lines sit above the kibble catalog averages of 26.9% protein and 395 kcal, and below its 37.4% starch average. Ancient Grains uses a wider mix of animal proteins, including bison, venison, duck and fish. PREY sticks to turkey, trout or Angus beef.

Who Makes It

Taste of the Wild is a dry and wet dog and cat food brand owned by Diamond Pet Foods, the trade name of Schell & Kampeter, Inc. of Meta, Missouri. The brand says its recipes are based on a pet's ancestral diet and it is known for less common proteins such as bison, venison, wild boar and trout. Its lines include the original grain-free recipes, Ancient Grains, and PREY limited ingredient recipes. 1, 2, 3

Where It Is Made

The company says every Taste of the Wild product is made in the USA at one of seven company facilities, in California (two), Missouri, South Carolina, Arkansas, Kansas and Indiana. Diamond Pet Foods says all of its dry pet food is made in its own family-owned plants rather than by a contract manufacturer. 4, 2

History

Diamond Pet Foods was founded in 1970 by brothers-in-law Gary Schell and Richard Kampeter in Meta, Missouri, and it launched Taste of the Wild in 2007 as a grain-free, high-protein line. The company says the brand has always been wholly owned by Diamond Pet Foods, which remains family-owned. 3, 2, 1

Worth Knowing

In May 2012, Taste of the Wild dry foods were part of a Diamond Pet Foods recall over possible Salmonella linked to the company's Gaston, South Carolina plant. In 2019 the FDA listed Taste of the Wild among the brands most often named in reports of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs; the FDA did not establish a cause. In 2021 Diamond settled a class action over grain-free labeling for $8 million without admitting wrongdoing. 5, 6, 7, 8

NEWS If you purchased Taste of the Wild Grain-Free Dog Food in Missouri then a class action may affect your rights

A court-approved notice said a Jackson County, Missouri court certified a class of Missouri buyers of Taste of the Wild Grain-Free Dog Food in Harmon v. Schell & Kampeter, which alleges the food was marketed without disclosing a possible DCM link. The company denies the allegations; the case website now lists a January 8, 2027 trial date.
