Dehydrated White Fish

Lean, concentrated fish protein, not an omega-3 source

Dehydrated white fish is lean fish such as cod with most of the water dried out, leaving almost pure protein. It gives a dog concentrated, low-fat animal protein. The fatty acids that make fish famous mostly live in oily fish instead.

What it is
Lean, white-fleshed fish dried until most of its water is gone, leaving a light, protein-rich ingredient.
Made from
Lean white fish flesh, such as cod
Main job
Concentrated lean animal protein

Straight answer

Is Dehydrated White Fish safe for dogs?

Use it as a topper protein, not a meal

In a topper, this is the protein, so it should sit first or second, ahead of the fruit and vegetable powders. Check whether the bag says complete and balanced or supplemental feeding only, and look for a calcium source such as tricalcium phosphate. Skip it if your dog reacts to fish.

Why it is in the food

What it is

How it is made

Fish processors handle lean white fish for the human market. Drying the flesh or trimmings removes the water bacteria need, turning a perishable catch into a shelf-stable protein that one supplier sells as upcycled.4,5

  1. 01 // Source Food-grade whitefish Lean white fish, sold by one supplier as wild-caught and upcycled from fish processing.
  2. 02 // Process Dried Air temperature, humidity, airflow and time set how fast the water leaves; uniform pieces dry evenly.
  3. 03 // Process Dried to target At a water activity of 0.85 or lower the fish counts as shelf-stable, which holds back bacteria.
  4. 04 // Output Dry fish pieces One supplier sells it at over 85% protein with at least a 12-month shelf life.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

98

% protein

Protein in dried cod on a dry matter basis. Lean fish is nearly all protein once the water goes, with under 2% fat.

Crude protein 98.1%1
Crude fat 1.8%1
Phosphorus 1.2%1
Calcium 0.2%1
EPA plus DHA 6.3 g/kg1
Iodine 1.9 mg/kg1
Selenium 0.3 mg/kg1

Figures are dried cod at 20% water, converted to dry matter, so table rounding pushes protein high. The part of the fish matters most: five pollock by-products differed by 71% in protein.1,6

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Protein without the water

Raw wild cod is 82% water and holds 17.4 g protein per 100 g. Dried cod at 20% water holds 78.5 g, so a small scoop adds a lot of protein.1,2

  2. 02

    A less common protein

Fish triggered reactions in 5 of 297 food-allergic dogs, against 102 for beef and 45 for chicken. One supplier sells dried whitefish on its hypoallergenic properties, which goes further than that data.4,7

  3. 03

    Stores without a fridge

Dried to a water activity of 0.85 or lower, fish is shelf-stable. One supplier quotes at least 12 months of shelf life, which suits pour-on toppers.4,5

  4. 04

    Protein without much fat

Raw wild cod carries 1 g fat per 100 g against 15.9 g in farmed salmon, so it adds protein while adding few calories from fat.2,3

How much No source publishes a typical amount; toppers built on it that are not complete are labeled for intermittent or supplementary feeding only.9

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Dried fish is concentrated, high-protein fish

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Plain arithmetic. Raw wild cod is 82% water with 17.4 g protein per 100 g; dried cod at 20% water carries 78.5 g. The catch is scale: a topper delivers it by the spoonful, not as the diet's base.1,2

  2. Brands say

White fish is hypoallergenic for allergic dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Fish was the trigger in 5 of 297 dogs with proven food reactions, against 102 for beef. The authors note that ranking could simply reflect what dogs were fed in past decades. Any protein can sensitize a dog; white fish is uncommon, not hypoallergenic.4,7

  3. Brands say

Fish protein is highly digestible for dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Fish meals averaged about 90% lysine digestibility in rooster assays. No dog trial has measured dehydrated white fish itself, and the same study found fish ingredient quality differed greatly by the part of the fish used.6

  4. Brands say

White fish gives dogs omega-3s for skin and coat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Lean fish carries little fat. Dried cod has about 0.5 g EPA plus DHA per 100 g; raw farmed salmon has 1.2 g at 64% water, about 5 times more on a dry basis. No dog trial tested white fish for coat.1,3

  5. Owners say

Fish exposes dogs to dangerous mercury

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

FDA puts cod, pollock, haddock and whitefish in its Best Choices group, the lowest-mercury fish for people. The fear belongs to other species; no evidence ties white fish in pet food to mercury harm in dogs.8

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Dried white fish is almost all protein, about 98% on a dry matter basis for dried cod, with under 2% fat. Filler would add bulk with no job. This is the animal protein itself.1

  2. Q02

Can it replace my dog's food?

    No

Dried cod has about 6 times more phosphorus than calcium. Products that are not complete and balanced are labeled for intermittent or supplementary feeding only, so feed it as a topper on a complete food.1,9

  3. Q03

Does the part of the fish matter?

    Yes

In five pollock by-products, from milt to viscera to liver, protein differed by 71% and fat by 79%. The researchers concluded fish ingredients vary greatly with the part used, so supplier specs matter.6
