Iodized Salt
Useful minerals, with the final dose unseen
Iodized salt is ordinary salt with a small amount of iodine added. It supplies sodium and chloride, while iodine supports thyroid hormone production. Its place on the ingredient list does not reveal the finished food's mineral levels.
Role in the food Supporting nutrient- What it is
- Salt with a measured addition of iodine, mixed throughout for use as a mineral ingredient.
- Made from
- Mined or evaporated salt and an iodine compound
- Main job
- Sodium, chloride and iodine
- Typical amount
- One dog diet used 3 g per kg
- Watch for
- Dogs needing a measured sodium intake
- Not the same as
- Plain salt
Straight answer
Is Iodized Salt safe for dogs?
Check the food's minerals, not this name
Iodized salt near the mineral ingredients has a useful job. Its list position cannot tell you the food's sodium or iodine level. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for your dog's life stage. If your dog needs sodium control, get the finished food's sodium figure from the maker.

What it is
How it is made
Salt producers mine rock deposits or evaporate salty water to recover crystals. They refine or grind the salt, then add an iodine compound. The resulting ingredient gives food makers a way to add several minerals together.7,10,11
- 01 // Source Salt deposits or brine Producers mine solid salt or recover crystals by evaporating seawater or underground brine.
- 02 // Process Refine the crystals Recovered salt is ground or refined before the iodine compound is added.
- 03 // Process Mix in iodine A measured iodine compound is mixed in dry or sprayed onto the salt as a solution.
- 04 // Output Iodized salt The dry ingredient reaches the food plant with iodine distributed throughout the salt.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
0.007
% iodine
This is the minimum iodine content in AAFCO's ingredient definition. It does not describe iodine in the finished dog food.
Why it is in the bag
A small amount doing real mineral work
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add iodized salt to supply sodium, chloride and iodine, which each have their own minimum in AAFCO dog food nutrient profiles, and salt also seasons the food. On labels it typically sits after the main ingredients, near the other minerals. Ingredients are listed by weight, so that means a small amount, but mineral needs are small too, so it is not filler. The label does not show whether the dose is right.7,8,9,10
-
01
Supplies two major minerals
Salt adds sodium and chloride together. Dog food nutrient profiles set separate minimums for both, so formulators account for their amounts across the whole recipe.8,10
-
02
Adds a little iodine
Iodization mixes a measured iodine compound into salt. Iodine has its own minimum in dog food nutrient profiles, although other ingredients can supply it too.7,8,11
-
03
Adjusts the taste
Salt is used for flavor. In a small dog test, sodium chloride on sampling swabs appealed more than untreated swabs; the test did not compare finished foods.3,10
-
04
Uses industrial salt supply
Mined and evaporated salt is produced at industrial scale. Adding iodine uses measuring equipment and mixers, making this a practical mineral ingredient for manufacturers.10,11
How much A published dog diet contained 3 g of iodized salt per kg of diet; that single recipe does not define a usual amount.5

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Brands say
Added iodine keeps a dog's thyroid working
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Iodine is needed to make thyroid hormones. In 1 case, a dog fed an unbalanced diet regained normal thyroid hormone levels after changing to an iodine-supplemented food. That does not show a thyroid benefit for dogs already eating enough iodine.2,8
-
Brands say
Salt makes dog food taste better
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a test with 5 dogs, sodium chloride applied to cotton saliva-sampling swabs appealed more than untreated swabs, but citric acid outperformed it and no food was involved. The result cannot measure a taste benefit from iodized salt in kibble.3
-
Owners say
Iodized salt on a bag means high blood pressure
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a crossover study of 8 dogs with experimental kidney disease, short-term changes in dietary sodium had no apparent immediate effect on blood pressure. An ingredient listing gives no sodium dose, so it cannot predict a dog's blood pressure.4,6,9

Critics say
Iodized salt is just filler
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

AAFCO specifies iodine content for this ingredient, and its dog food profiles set separate minimums for sodium, chloride and iodine. Those are nutritional jobs. The ingredient list cannot show whether the finished recipe supplies the right amounts.7,8,9
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt supplies sodium and chloride, plus added iodine. All 3 appear in dog food nutrient profiles. How much the food needs from iodized salt depends on what its other ingredients supply.7,8
-
Q02
Does it mean too much sodium?
Not necessarilyIngredients are listed by weight without their amounts. Other ingredients can supply sodium too. If your dog needs a measured sodium intake, ask the maker for the finished food's sodium level.9
-
Q03
Should I add more iodine?
Not by defaultJudge the whole diet. An iodine-deficient dog improved after a food change, while an experiment in 18 puppies found altered thyroid measures with excess potassium iodide. The label entry alone cannot tell you whether more iodine is needed.1,2,8,9
