JustFoodForDogs adds Digestive Care Rx diet and changes its weight control recipe

The fresh food brand launched a low fat prescription diet for digestive issues and swapped carbs and liver in its Metabolic + Weight Control formula.

What happened

JustFoodForDogs, a company that sells fresh dog food, announced on August 17, 2026 that it is adding to its Veterinary Support Diet line. These are prescription foods, so a veterinarian has to approve them before you can buy them.

The company launched one new recipe, Digestive Care Low Fat, and changed an existing one, Metabolic + Weight Control. According to the press release, both are "available by veterinary prescription" and are sold through veterinarians or on the brand's own website.

The new Digestive Care recipe

The brand says Digestive Care Low Fat is meant for dogs with gastrointestinal conditions and digestive sensitivities, and the press release also names pancreatitis. The company describes the recipe as having a novel protein, ultra-low fat and a moderate, balanced amount of fiber. A novel protein is one a dog probably has not eaten before.

The coverage we read does not say which protein it is, and the press release does not name it either. We could not confirm the full ingredient list or the guaranteed analysis, so it is unclear exactly how much fat the recipe contains. Like the rest of the line, the company says it was formulated by board-certified veterinary nutrition specialists and made with human-grade ingredients.

What changed in Metabolic + Weight Control

This is the change most likely to matter to current customers. The brand says the updated recipe uses barley and peas as carbohydrates with a lower glycemic index, which it says are meant to support weight management and dogs with diabetes. The formula also replaces beef liver with turkey liver. The company says this makes it a single-protein recipe.

The brand also says the new version has a more varied fiber mix to support gut health during weight loss, and that it is complete and balanced for long-term feeding. Dr. Chris Margrey, the company's director of veterinary nutrition, said in the announcement: "Nutrition plays a critical role in supporting a dog's health, especially when managing chronic or complex medical conditions."

What it means if you feed this brand

If your dog already eats Metabolic + Weight Control, the food your dog gets now may not match what they ate before. The protein change is worth noting for dogs with food sensitivities: a recipe that used beef liver now uses turkey liver. A dog that reacts to turkey, or whose elimination diet was planned around the old ingredients, could be affected.

Changing carbohydrates can also change how a food behaves for a diabetic dog. The brand has not said whether calories per serving changed, so it is unclear whether feeding amounts should change. Because this is a prescription diet, your vet should know about the new recipe, especially if your dog's insulin dose or weight loss plan was set using the old one.

JustFoodForDogs says the line now has seven Veterinary Support Diets and that it plans to add more in early 2027.

What to check on the bag

For Metabolic + Weight Control, read the ingredient list for turkey liver, barley and peas. That tells you whether you have the new version or the old one. Compare the calorie statement with your current pack. If it is different, ask your vet before changing portions.

For Digestive Care Low Fat, look at the ingredient list to see which protein is used, and check the crude fat figure in the guaranteed analysis. On both recipes, look for the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement, which tells you which life stage the food is complete and balanced for.
