Northwest Naturals recalls one lot of frozen raw chicken dog food over Salmonella, Listeria
FDA tests found Salmonella and Listeria in lot B-19 of the 6 lb Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe, sold in stores nationwide.
What happened
Northwest Naturals, a raw pet food maker based in Portland, Oregon, is voluntarily recalling one lot of its frozen raw chicken dog food. According to the recall notice posted by the US Food and Drug Administration on August 28, 2026, the problem was found after the FDA collected and tested product samples.
The dog food tested positive for both Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. The notice says the product was distributed to retail stores nationwide. It also says: "No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this voluntary recall."
Which bags are affected
The dog product is the Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe in the 6 lb bag. Only lot B-19 is included, with a best by date of 01/25/2028 and UPC 087316380392. The FDA notice lists 19 cases, or 684 pounds, of this product.
The same notice also covers a cat product: Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe in a 2 lb bag, lot B-5, best by 01/26/2028, UPC 087316384956. That item tested positive for Salmonella. If your home has both dogs and cats, check the freezer for both bags.
Nothing in the notices we read suggests other recipes, sizes or lots are involved. The recall is limited to the lots listed.
What it means if you feed this brand
If you have a 6 lb bag of the chicken recipe, find the lot number and best by date on the package. If they match lot B-19 and 01/25/2028, the FDA notice says to "stop feeding them to their pets and return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund."

Raw food carries a risk to people too, not just pets. The notice says Salmonella in people can cause "nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever." Listeria can cause fever, muscle aches and other symptoms, and is a particular concern for pregnant people, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system. After handling the food, wash your hands and clean bowls, scoops, counters and any freezer or fridge space where the bag was stored.
In pets, the notice lists signs such as lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, less appetite and belly pain. Some pets can carry these bacteria without looking sick. If your dog ate food from this lot and seems unwell, call your veterinarian.
What to check on the bag
Look for three things: the product name (Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe), the lot code B-19 and the best by date 01/25/2028. The UPC on the dog bag is 087316380392.
If you already threw out the packaging and are unsure which lot you had, the store where you bought it may be able to help. Northwest Naturals takes questions at 1-866-637-1872, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pacific Time, according to the recall notice.
