Poultry Fat

Useful calories, with freshness worth checking

Poultry fat is rendered fat separated from poultry processing tissues. It gives kibble concentrated energy and linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid for dogs. Makers also spray fat onto finished kibble for flavor, though poultry fat is not every dog's favorite.

What it is
Fat melted and separated from poultry processing tissues, then sold as a concentrated feed ingredient.
Made from
Poultry processing tissues and trimmings
Main job
Energy and essential fat
Typical amount
A 5% kibble coating was tested in dogs
Watch for
Rancidity and prescribed low fat diets
Not the same as
Poultry meal

Straight answer

Is Poultry Fat safe for dogs?

Check the complete food's fat and calories

Poultry fat tells you where some calories and linoleic acid come from. Its place on the list does not reveal the finished food's fat level. Read the guaranteed analysis and calorie statement. If your dog needs fat restriction or a controlled allergy diet, choose a food formulated for that need.

What it is

How it is made

Poultry processing leaves tissues that contain recoverable fat. Rendering plants heat those tissues and separate the melted fat from water and solids, creating a saleable ingredient for pet food and other uses.4,7

  1. 01 // Source Poultry tissues Processing trimmings contain fat alongside water, protein and connective tissue.
  2. 02 // Process Heat the tissues Rendering melts the fat so it separates from the water and protein around it.
  3. 03 // Process Clarify the fat Decanters remove water and solids; a separator can further clean the liquid fat.
  4. 04 // Output Rendered poultry fat The separated fat goes to pet food makers as an energy ingredient or kibble coating.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

191

g/kg linoleic

Average linoleic acid in the poultry fat table. It contributes an essential fatty acid, while the complete food determines how much a dog gets.

Crude fat 100%4
Oleic acid 393-509 g/kg4
Linoleic acid 100-233 g/kg4
Palmitic acid 181-236 g/kg4

The fatty acid mix varies between samples. Linoleic acid spans 100 to 233 g/kg dry, while oleic acid spans 393 to 509 g/kg. Composition figures do not reveal whether a shipment has oxidized.2,4

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds concentrated calories

Separated fat raises a recipe's energy and fat content without adding the water and protein in poultry tissues. Makers can adjust it apart from the protein ingredients.4,7

  2. 02

    Supplies linoleic acid

Poultry fat contributes linoleic acid, which appears in dog food nutrient profiles. The complete recipe, rather than this ingredient alone, must supply enough.4,5

  3. 03

    Coats finished kibble

Manufacturers spray heated fat onto dried kibble after cooking. AAFCO describes added fats as supplying flavor, and a 30-dog test of three equally coated fats found sunflower oil preferred over beef tallow, showing fat choice affects preference once kibble is coated.1,6

  4. 04

    Uses a poultry fat stream

Rendering makes a separate product from fat in poultry processing tissues. An industry survey found substantial chicken fat purchases for dog food, showing the commercial scale of this use.7,8

How much A dog preference study tested a 5% poultry fat coating; that tested amount is not a standard amount for every recipe.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Poultry fat supplies an essential fatty acid

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The composition table lists an average of 191 g/kg linoleic acid on a dry basis, and AAFCO specifies a minimum for complete dog food. Poultry fat contributes it; the whole recipe determines whether the food meets the minimum.4,5

  2. Brands say

Poultry fat makes kibble irresistible to dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 30-dog test, three kibbles wore equal 5% coatings of poultry fat, sunflower oil or beef tallow. Sunflower oil won preference 56% of the time over beef tallow's 44%, and the abstract does not report a poultry fat preference rate at all.1

  3. Brands say

Poultry fat gives every dog a shinier coat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 9-week supplementation phase, researchers tested zinc alone, linoleic acid alone and both. Coat gloss improved in the combined group against controls. The abstract reports no gloss benefit for linoleic acid alone, and poultry fat was not tested.3,4

  4. Owners say

Chicken allergic dogs can safely eat poultry fat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The composition table lists no protein in poultry fat, but it describes the ingredient rather than testing allergy safety. The cited dog allergy sources did not challenge poultry fat specifically, and retail diets can contain contaminant proteins.4,10

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies calories and linoleic acid, and makers use it on kibble's surface for flavor. Those are real jobs. Judge the finished food's fat level and calories instead of treating the ingredient's presence as a verdict.1,4,5,6

  2. Q02

    Does poultry mean chicken?

    Not necessarily

Chicken is one kind of poultry. The broader poultry fat name does not identify a single bird species. If your dog needs an elimination diet, choose a food with controlled ingredients instead of guessing from this label.6,10

  3. Q03

Will it upset a sensitive stomach?

    Diet dependent

The ingredient name cannot tell you whether the complete food suits your dog. Dogs prescribed fat restriction, including many with pancreatitis, need the appropriate total fat level. Check the food's analysis, not just its ingredient list.9,11
