Flaxseed

A useful plant omega source with limits

Flaxseed is the whole seed of an oilseed crop, used whole or ground in dog food. It adds oil, fiber and the plant omega-3 fat ALA. Dogs make some EPA from ALA, but flaxseed is a poor substitute for a direct source of EPA and DHA.

Straight answer

Is Flaxseed safe for dogs?

Read it as plant omega and fiber

Flaxseed low on a bag's list adds ALA and fiber. Check the main protein and fat sources around it. If the food promises fish oil benefits from flaxseed alone, look for a stated source of EPA and DHA. The ingredient name does not tell you whether the seed was ground.

The story

An ancient fiber crop, tested as a dog omega

Flax was possibly one of the first crops people domesticated. Farmers in the Fertile Crescent grew it for fiber, food and medicine from about 10,000 BCE, and growers still choose fiber or oil varieties depending on the harvest they want. The oil found industrial work early: Jan van Eyck used linseed oil to preserve paintings around 1400, and an English patent for linoleum flooring made with it followed in 1860.7

Animal feeding came before dog food. Linseed has a long record as a coat conditioner for gloss and a mild laxative feed for horses, the same two jobs dog food brands now sell it on. Supply is large: in 2012 the world grew about 2 million metric tons, and Canada, Russia, China, Kazakhstan and the US produced more than 70% of it. By 2001, veterinary researchers were feeding the seed to 18 dogs to test the coat idea.1,7

The turning point came from dog research. In 2011, researchers fed flaxseed oil to 5 beagles and 5 greyhounds for 3 weeks: plasma EPA rose, but DHA did not. In 2023, a 45-dog trial found flaxseed cake left the red blood cell omega-3 index unchanged after 4 weeks, while fish and krill raised it. Those trials set the limit on flax in dog food: it supplies ALA and some EPA, not the DHA that fish oil brings.2,4

What it is

How it is made

Flax is grown commercially for its oil. Flaxseed for dog food remains the whole seed rather than the cake left after oil pressing. Growers dry it for storage, and processors may grind it to expose the oil.1,7,8

  1. 01 // Source Flax seed pods Oilseed flax produces dry pods containing small, hard seeds rich in oil.
  2. 02 // Process Harvest and dry Growers thresh mature pods and dry the seed further if it is too damp to store.
  3. 03 // Process Grind if needed Grinding breaks the seed coat and gives digestive enzymes better access to the oil.
  4. 04 // Output Whole or ground seed The seed reaches the food plant with its oil inside, unlike oil pressed flaxseed meal.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

37

% crude fat

The average fat content in tested seeds. Flaxseed brings substantial oil to a recipe, alongside fiber and some protein.

Crude fat 31.2-43.6%6
Crude protein 20.3-27.9%6
Neutral detergent fiber 13.2-33.8%6
Crude fiber 5.7-15.4%6
Ash 3.3-6.2%6

The seed analyzes include raw and processed samples, and fiber varies widely. Oil pressing changes the ingredient: flaxseed meal has less fat and more concentrated protein than whole seed.6,8

Why it is in the bag

A real plant omega-3 source, in modest amounts

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Ingredients are listed by weight. When flaxseed sits mid list, after the main proteins, starches and fats, it may be a few percent of the food. That amount can count: an 18-dog trial coating kibble with 3% ground seed raised blood ALA. It also adds oil and fiber. It does not supply DHA, and near the end of a long list its share is likely too small to change the food's nutrition.1,4,6,13

  1. 01

    Adds plant omega-3

Flaxseed oil is rich in ALA. Ground whole seed raised blood ALA in a dog trial, though ALA does not supply EPA and DHA directly.1,7

  2. 02

    Adds fiber and bulk

The seed coat contributes fiber and its mucilage absorbs water. Isolated flaxseed mucilage softened stool in dogs, but that trial did not test whole seed.5,7

  3. 03

    Draws on an oilseed crop

Flax is grown commercially for oil. Using whole seed draws on that supply and gives a formulator fat, fiber and some protein through one ingredient.6,7

  4. 04

    Keeps the seed oil

Whole seed retains the oil that pressing removes to make flaxseed meal. That matters when the recipe calls for ALA as well as fiber.7,8

How much A controlled trial coated kibble with 3% whole ground flaxseed as fed; that tested amount is not a standard commercial inclusion rate.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

    3. Thin
    4. None

Flaxseed oil averages more than half ALA among its fatty acids. In an 18-dog study, kibble with 3% ground seed raised blood ALA. That supports an ALA claim, not a claim that the seed supplies EPA and DHA directly.1,6,7

  2. Brands say

Flaxseed improves skin and coat health

    Outruns the evidence

    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

An 18-dog seed trial found brief coat improvement with both flaxseed and sunflower seed. In a 30-dog oil trial, coat scores improved across plant oil groups without a difference between oils. Flaxseed has no proven special edge.1,3

    4. None

In an 11-dog crossover trial, isolated flaxseed mucilage softened stool but did not change fecal weight. The seed contains that fiber, yet the trial did not show whole flaxseed correcting constipation.5,7

    4. None

In a 45-dog comparison, fish raised the blood EPA and DHA index after 4 weeks; flaxseed cake did not. A krill company sponsored the trial. It tested cake rather than whole seed, but gives no support for equivalence.2,4

The research

Studies worth knowing

Published research we read for this page, dog studies first.

  1. 2023 // Feeding trial, 3 foods

Fish raised the omega-3 index; flaxseed cake did not2

45 dogs split into three groups

Found. After 4 weeks, the red blood cell omega-3 index rose from 1.35 to 1.9% with fish and from 1.36 to 2.36% with krill. Flaxseed cake, giving 1,465 mg ALA daily, made no significant change.

What it means. Flax in a food does not stand in for fish oil. If you want EPA and DHA, look for a marine source on the label.

  2. 2011 // Feeding trial, 3 weeks

Flaxseed oil raised EPA in dogs, but not DHA4

    5 beagles and 5 greyhounds

Found. Flaxseed oil at 100 ml per kg of food raised plasma ALA and EPA steadily from day 0 to day 22. DHA did not rise, and ALA and EPA were still climbing when the trial ended.

What it means. Dogs convert some flax ALA into EPA. Do not count on flaxseed to raise DHA.

  3. 2001 // Feeding trial, 2 seeds

Flaxseed coat gains in dogs faded within a month1

    18 healthy dogs

Found. Flaxseed and sunflower seed both nudged blinded coat scores up, but the gain did not last beyond 28 days. Serum ALA rose in the flaxseed dogs and stayed unchanged in the sunflower dogs.

What it means. A shinier coat from flaxseed, if you see one, is likely brief and not unique to flax.

  4. 2016 // Feeding trial, 3 diets

Flaxseed mucilage cut fat digestion and loosened dog stools5

    11 privately owned dogs

Found. Fat digestibility fell from 96.9% on the control diet to 94.5% with mucilage. Fecal scores moved from 2.8 to 3.7 on a 7 point scale, looser than the ideal 2 to 3, with no change in fecal weight.

What it means. Large amounts of the seed's gel fiber loosen stool past ideal rather than adding bulk. Whole seed has not been tested this way in dogs.

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Whole flaxseed contains oil, fiber and protein. It has recipe jobs even when it sits low on the list. Its modest protein contribution does not make it a main protein source.6,7

  2. Q02

    Does ground flaxseed matter?

    Yes

The hard seed coat limits access to the oil inside. Grinding breaks that barrier. A label saying only flaxseed does not tell you whether the supplier ground it before making the food.1,7

  3. Q03

Is it the same as fish oil?

    No

Flaxseed supplies ALA, while fish oil supplies EPA and DHA directly. Dogs converted some ALA to EPA in a small trial, but DHA did not rise. Read an EPA and DHA claim separately from a flaxseed claim.2,4,7

What it means The plural is just another way of writing the same ingredient. It names the same whole seed and says nothing extra about grinding, growing method or quality.

For your dog Nothing changes for the dog. Flaxseeds and flaxseed on a label describe the same seed, with the same oil, fiber and ALA.

Ground flaxseed

Matters for your dog A little

Ground Flaxseed · Whole Ground Flaxseed

What it means AAFCO's official feed terms, which states typically adopt into feed law, define grinding as breaking material into smaller particles by crushing, shearing or rubbing. The term sets no particle size and says nothing about how recently the seed was milled.

For your dog Grinding opens the hard seed coat. In a 3 month human trial, 30 g of milled flaxseed raised plasma ALA and whole seed did not. In kibble, makers grind ingredients into a coarse meal before cooking, so the label word likely matters most in fresh, frozen and topper foods.1,9,12,14,15,16

Organic Flaxseed

What it means The USDA National Organic Program defines organic. The field must have had no prohibited substances applied for 3 years before harvest and must keep buffers from neighboring sprayed land. It does not promise more ALA or better nutrition.

For your dog A review of 343 crop studies found detectable pesticide residues 4 times as often in conventional crops, and more antioxidants in organic ones; an organic farming trust helped fund it. We found no study of organic flaxseed itself, and none measuring a health effect in dogs.10,11
