Sweet Potatoes

Useful starch, with health claims that overreach

Sweet potatoes are starchy roots used fresh or dried in dog food. They supply energy and help form kibble. Promises about steady blood sugar, firm stool or better eyesight run beyond the dog evidence.

Straight answer

Is Sweet Potatoes safe for dogs?

Read it as starch, then check its neighbors

The list ranks ingredients by weight before cooking. Fresh sweet potatoes are about 70% water, so even a high listing cannot tell you how much carbohydrate they add; dried flour is more concentrated. Check the named protein and other starches, then judge the complete food instead of a beta carotene or stool promise.

The story

From ancient American crop to grain-free kibble starch

Sweet potatoes are one of the oldest crops in the Americas. Dried roots found in Peru date to 10,000 to 8,000 years ago, and genetic work points to at least 2 separate domestications, one in the Caribbean or Central America and one in northwestern South America. Today it is one of 7 food crops grown at more than 100 million tonnes a year, and in 2007 half the root harvest went to animals or the starch industry.7,10

Pet food came to the root later, when grain-free and limited ingredient recipes needed a carbohydrate that was not a cereal. In 2022 Michelle Lang, president of the Pet Food Industry Association of Australia, said the swing toward sweet potato was fueled first by human food trends, where the root is seen as more nutritious than the standard potato. It now appears in grain-free and limited ingredient kibble, in fresh foods and in dehydrated treats.13

Jerky treats drew federal attention in 2013. By September 24 that year, FDA had received more than 3000 illness complaints tied to chicken, duck or sweet potato jerky treats, nearly all imported from China. The reports covered more than 3600 dogs and more than 580 deaths. FDA testing had not found a cause, and the agency reminded owners that jerky treats are not required for a balanced diet.12

The bigger turning point came in July 2018, when FDA said it was investigating heart disease reports in dogs eating foods with peas, lentils, other pulses or potatoes among the first 10 ingredients. In its chart of reported products from 2014 through April 2019, potatoes or sweet potatoes appeared in 42%, a far smaller share than peas or lentils. FDA now says it will post no further updates until meaningful new science appears.8

What it is

How it is made

Farmers grow sweet potatoes for food and feed markets. Pet food makers use the harvested roots fresh or dry and grind them into flour. This ingredient is a crop, not a processing leftover.4,7

  1. 01 // Source Harvested roots Growers harvest the starchy storage roots, whose flesh varies from white to orange or purple by variety.
  2. 02 // Process Cleaned and cut Roots intended for drying are cleaned, then shredded or sliced before moisture is removed.
  3. 03 // Process Dried and ground For flour, cut roots are dried and ground; fresh roots skip this step.
  4. 04 // Output Roots or flour Fresh roots or dried flour reach the pet food plant, where extrusion cooks the starch in kibble.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

73

% starch

The average for dried sweet potato root, after excluding water. Starch explains its energy and kibble roles; the root supplies little protein.

Starch 54.6-78.9%6
Crude protein 2.6-8.4%5
Neutral detergent fiber 9.1-15.4%5
Crude fiber 2.8-5.3%5
Crude fat 0.3-2.5%5
Ash 2.5-5%5

Fresh roots average about 30% solids, so their label weight includes substantial water. Starch varies among dried-root samples, and the measured fiber share changes with the roots used.5,6

Benefits

What it does for your dog

Each benefit carries the same evidence grade as the claims below.

  1. 01

    Usable energy from cooked starch

Starch is nearly three quarters of dried root weight, and cooking lifts the easily digested starch share from 4% to 55%, which is why extruded kibble turns it into usable calories.6,7

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None
  2. 02

A gentler blood sugar rise after meals

In 2 small dog trials, sweet potato diets gave smaller glucose rises than corn, potato, pea or cereal diets. One sweet potato food also held less starch, and neither trial included diabetic dogs.1,11

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None
  3. 03

    More fermentation in the colon

Dogs fed a sweet potato diet had higher stool short chain fatty acids and more Faecalibacterium, signs of colon fermentation. The tradeoff is real: that diet had the lowest digestibility of 7 tested.4,11

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None
  4. 04

    Beta carotene from orange varieties

Orange roots carry beta carotene, and Beagles absorbed purified doses of 50 to 100 mg a day. No study has measured how much a sweet potato food delivers, or any health effect from it.2,7

Why it is in the bag

A real starch source when listed high

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Near the top of a list, sweet potatoes are one of the food's main carbohydrate sources. Dried root is about 73% starch on a dry matter basis, and that starch helps kibble expand during extrusion. Lists rank ingredients by weight before cooking, and fresh roots are about 70% water, so a fresh listing in the middle of the list likely adds less starch than it looks. Down past tenth, it is likely too little to change the food's nutrition.4,5,6,9

  1. 01

    Supplies starch energy

Starch makes up most of the root's dry weight. Cooking increases the share available to digestive enzymes, so sweet potatoes fill a carbohydrate role in the recipe.6,7

  2. 02

    Helps form kibble

Starch changes during extrusion and helps the kibble expand. A dog food study made kibble with sweet potato flour, though the processor had to adjust the added water.4

  3. 03

    Replaces grain starch

Flour gives manufacturers a starch source for recipes without grain. Roots are grown widely, but turning a crop that is mostly water into dry flour adds processing.5,7

  4. 04

    Adds a recognizable vegetable

Orange varieties contain beta carotene, giving manufacturers a familiar ingredient to discuss. The name on a bag does not disclose the flesh color or carotene amount.7

How much One 24-dog study tested sweet potato flour at 17.77%, 35.56% and 53.33% of the formulas by weight.4

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Dried-root samples averaged 72.8% starch on a dry matter basis, and cooking makes more sweet potato starch accessible to digestive enzymes. It is an energy ingredient; the complete food determines how much energy a dog gets.6,7

  2. Brands say

Sweet potatoes keep blood sugar steady

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 15-dog crossover trial, the sweet potato diet produced the smallest glucose and insulin responses, but it also held less starch than the comparison diets. A flour study reported a smaller maximum rise above baseline than rice. Neither tested diabetes control.1,4

  3. Brands say

Sweet potato fiber improves gut health

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 24-dog study, more sweet potato flour increased fecal fermentation products, but digestibility and stool dry matter fell. Those measurements show a gut effect; the study did not demonstrate better health.4

  4. Brands say

    Beta carotene improves dogs' eyesight

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Orange sweet potatoes contain beta carotene. Dogs absorbed purified beta carotene in feeding experiments lasting up to 30 days, but those experiments fed no sweet potatoes and measured no vision outcomes. The variety on a bag is unknown.2,7

  5. Owners say

Sweet potatoes cause heart disease in dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

An analysis of 18 diets could not evaluate sweet potatoes: they appeared in too few foods in either comparison group. FDA says the broader diet and heart disease question involves multiple factors. This evidence does not identify sweet potatoes as a cause.3,8

The research

Studies worth knowing

Published research we read for this page, dog studies first.

  1. 2023 // Feeding trial, 3 commercial foods

Sweet potato food produced the smallest blood sugar rise1

    15 healthy neutered adult dogs

Found. Total blood sugar over 6 hours after a meal was about 6% lower with the sweet potato food than the cereal food (34,236 vs 36,406 mg/dL·min), and insulin was lowest too. Farmina, a pet food maker, partly funded it.

What it means. A modest gap in healthy dogs. The sweet potato food also held less starch, 25% vs 28%, so the root alone cannot take the credit.

  2. 2000 // Feeding experiments, purified doses

Dogs absorb beta carotene into blood and immune cells2

    Mature Beagle dogs

Found. Single doses up to 200 mg raised blood beta carotene, peaking at 6 hours with a half-life of 3 to 4 hours. Daily doses of 50 or 100 mg for 30 days raised it in white blood cells.

What it means. Dogs can take up beta carotene, but these were purified doses, not sweet potato, and no eye or immune outcome was measured.

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Sweet potatoes supply starch for energy and kibble structure. They supply little protein, so read them as a carbohydrate ingredient and check what provides the recipe's animal protein.5,6,7

  2. Q02

    Will it firm loose stools?

    No proof

The direct flour study points the other way at higher inclusion: stool dry matter fell as more rice was replaced. Do not choose a food for diarrhea because sweet potatoes appear on the bag.4

  3. Q03

Does a high listing mean more starch?

    Not necessarily

Ingredients are ranked by weight before cooking. Fresh sweet potatoes average about 70% water, while flour is dry. A high fresh-root listing alone cannot tell you the root's share of the finished food's carbohydrate.5,9

  4. Q04

Should heart concerns change my choice?

    Read the recipe

Sweet potatoes alone have not been shown to cause dilated cardiomyopathy, and the diet comparison had too few sweet potato foods to evaluate them. If your dog has DCM, discuss the complete recipe with its treating cardiologist.3,8

Fresh sweet potatoes

Matters for your dog A little

Fresh Sweet Potatoes

What it means AAFCO's feed term covers an ingredient that has not been frozen, cooked, dried, rendered or hydrolyzed, has no added salt or preservatives, and is kept only by refrigeration. It describes the root's state on arrival at the plant, not its quality or variety.

For your dog Fresh roots are about 70% water, and lists rank ingredients by weight before cooking, so fresh sweet potatoes sit higher than the same solids would as flour. The food is cooked after mixing, and we found no study showing a nutrient difference for the dog.5,9,16

  2. Some
  3. Thin
  4. None

Organic sweet potatoes

Matters for your dog A little

Organic Sweet Potatoes

What it means Certified under the USDA National Organic Program, which bars synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation and genetic engineering. USDA itself says organic food is not necessarily safer, healthier or more nutritious than conventional food.

For your dog A review of 343 studies of crops found pesticide residues 4 times as often in conventional crops, plus higher antioxidants and lower cadmium in organic ones. It pooled many crops, not sweet potatoes alone, and no dog study has measured a health effect.14,15

  1. Strong
  2. Some
  3. Thin
  4. None

Whole sweet potatoes

Matters for your dog No

Whole Sweet Potatoes

What it means We found no regulatory definition of whole. AAFCO's common food category covers food items it has not defined, including certain whole vegetables. On a label the word signals the root rather than a fraction, but it does not promise the skin was kept.

For your dog Plain sweet potatoes on a label already means the root, so whole adds no measurable difference in what the dog eats. The root's starch, protein and fiber are the same either way.17

Other wording

Matters for your dog No

Sweet Potato

What it means Sweet Potato is the singular spelling of the same ingredient, the starchy storage root. Nothing about sourcing, processing or amount differs from the plural name on the label.

For your dog Nothing changes for the dog. The singular and plural names describe the same root, so read its list position and its neighbors the same way you would for the plural name.
