Carrots

A small vegetable accent with limited benefits

Carrots are edible roots added fresh or dried to dog food. They bring color, carbohydrate, some fiber and beta carotene. The small amounts used in most recipes do not make the food an eye, immune or dental treatment.

Straight answer

Is Carrots safe for dogs?

Read past the carrot to the main ingredients

Carrots near the end of a bag's list are a modest vegetable addition. Fresh carrots also carry substantial water when ingredients are weighed, so their placement does not tell you how much dry carrot remains. Check the main ingredients and the finished food's nutrition. Ignore promises about sharper eyesight or cleaner teeth.

What it is

How it is made

Feed carrots come from the produce trade, mostly grade-out or surplus roots from seasons of overproduction. Whole roots are heavy and costly to haul, so some are dehydrated, a form already sold as pet treats.6

  1. 01 // Source Carrot roots Feed carrots are usually grade-out or surplus roots left over when the fresh market is oversupplied.
  2. 02 // Process Whole or chopped Feed carrots move whole or chopped, washed or not. Their weight and bulk make transport expensive.
  3. 03 // Process Used fresh or dried Roots go into moist recipes with their water intact or are dehydrated, which can sharply cut beta carotene.
  4. 04 // Output Carrot pieces Fresh or dehydrated root pieces reach the food plant, distinct from the pomace left after juicing.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

39.6

% sugars

One dehydrated root sample was about 40% sugar by dry weight. Fresh carrot is mostly water, so each bite carries much less.

Total sugars 39.6%7
Crude fiber 3.2-16.1%7
Crude protein 6.1-18.8%7
Ash 3.5-10.8%7
Crude fat 0.8-3.5%7
Starch 0.1-4.4%7

The sugar figure comes from one sample; the protein and fiber ranges span multiple samples. Variety changes carotene content, and drying can reduce it, so orange pieces do not reveal a vitamin dose.6,7

Why it is in the bag

A small color and flavor accent, not filler

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Carrots are there mainly as a sweet vegetable accent that reads well on a label, with a little fiber. Lists rank ingredients by weight, and an industry formulator calls carrots a minor accent. One published moist formula used about 3% fresh carrots; fresh roots are about 89% water, so that adds about 0.3% carrot solids, likely too little to change the food's nutrition. Higher on the list in a fresh or wet recipe, they add more fiber and beta carotene.4,6,8,9

  1. 01

    Adds sweetness and fiber

Carrot roots contain naturally occurring sugars and fiber. The sugars contribute flavor, while the whole root has less concentrated fiber than the pomace left after juicing.6,7

  2. 02

    Uses surplus roots

Grade-out and surplus carrots have an outlet in animal feed. Fresh roots are bulky and costly to transport, giving processors a reason to dehydrate them.6

  3. 03

    Supplies beta carotene

Orange carrots contain a vitamin A precursor. Its amount changes with variety and processing, so the ingredient name does not tell a formulator or owner the dose.6

How much A published moist-food formula used about 3% fresh carrots; an industry formulator describes carrots in pet food as a minor accent.4,9

Carrot roots supply sugars, fiber and beta carotene, and their visible color serves a recipe purpose. One published moist-food formula used about 3%. That small addition is no reason to judge the whole food by carrots.4,6,7,9

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Carrots bring color, carbohydrate and some fiber, and manufacturers usually use them as a small accent. They are not a reason by themselves to buy a food. Judge the main ingredients and the complete recipe.6,7,9

  2. Q02

Do carrots replace vitamin A supplements?

    Not reliably

Dogs use beta carotene as a vitamin A precursor, but variety and drying change how much the ingredient contains. The ingredient list gives no carotene amount. Judge complete nutrition from the finished food, not the carrot line.6,8

  3. Q03

Why are carrots near the end?

    Small addition

An industry formulator describes carrots as a minor accent. Ingredients are ranked by weight when the recipe is made, and the list does not give their amounts. A low placement fits that limited role.8,9

Fresh carrots

Matters for your dog A little

Fresh Carrots

What it means AAFCO defines "fresh" as a feed term: never frozen, cooked, dried, rendered or hydrolyzed, with no added salt, curing agents or preservatives, and kept only by refrigeration. A 2025 review quotes that wording. It says nothing about nutrient content or how the carrots were grown.

For your dog Fresh roots are about 89% water, so they rank higher by weight before processing than their solids justify. Skipping dehydration spares beta carotene that drying can destroy, but the food is still processed, and no study shows a difference for dogs.6,8,11

  3. Thin

Organic carrots

Matters for your dog A little

Organic Carrots

What it means The USDA National Organic Program sets the rules. Organic carrots grow on land free of prohibited substances for 3 years before harvest, without most synthetic pesticides and fertilizers or genetic engineering. It does not promise more nutrients.

For your dog A meta-analysis of 343 crop studies found pesticide residues 4 times as often in conventional crops, plus more cadmium. Those are averages across many crops, not carrots in dog food. At the small amounts most foods use, any effect on the dog is unmeasured and likely tiny.12,13

  1. Strong
  2. Some
  3. Thin
  4. None

Whole carrots

Matters for your dog No

Whole Carrots

What it means We found no regulatory definition of "whole" for carrots in pet food. Read literally, it names the root itself rather than carrot pomace, the fiber-heavy residue left after juicing.

For your dog Whole carrots and plain carrots are the same ingredient, and once chopped and cooked the word adds nothing. The real contrast is pomace, which has less protein and more fiber than the root.6
