Chicken Broth
Chicken flavor and moisture, with modest nutrition
Chicken broth is liquid made by cooking chicken bones, parts or meat in water. It adds chicken flavor and, in liquid form, moisture to food. Its place on the ingredient list does not tell you how much chicken protein the finished food contains.

Straight answer
Is Chicken Broth safe for dogs?
Read broth as flavor and liquid
Broth high on a wet-food list can reflect its water weight; in dry food, most added water leaves during cooking. Check the named meats, meals and finished protein analysis to judge the food's nutrition. Skip chicken broth if your dog has a diagnosed chicken allergy.

What it is
How it is made
Chicken processing leaves bones and parts that still hold flavor and protein. Broth makers cook them in water and separate the liquid. They may then concentrate or dry it for easier storage and transport.1,4,5,6
- 01 // Source Chicken parts Bones, attached meat and other chicken parts supply the material cooked for broth.
- 02 // Process Cook in water Heating draws chicken-derived compounds into the water while larger solids remain behind.
- 03 // Process Separate the liquid The liquid is separated from bones and solids; fat may also be removed.
- 04 // Output Broth or powder Suppliers offer liquid broth, concentrate and soluble powder for different pet food recipes.
What is in it

90
% protein
AAFCO's minimum crude protein share for the dry solids in a named chicken broth. A spoonful of liquid broth contains water too.
Why it is in the bag
Cooking liquid and chicken flavor, not the main protein
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
When broth is the main liquid in a wet food or topper, it can rank high, because ingredient lists run by weight and liquid broth is mostly water. There it is the cooking liquid and a chicken flavor dogs favor. One supplier pitches it to add palatability or to replace water on the label for consumer appeal. The food's protein comes mainly from the named meats and meals.2,6,7
-
01
Adds chicken aroma
In a food-choice experiment, free-ranging dogs ate chicken-extract bread before bread with water or no addition. Broth gives makers a way to add that chicken smell.2
-
02
Supplies recipe liquid
Wet food needs liquid. A supplier markets chicken broth as a flavorful replacement for some processing water, which also puts a named ingredient on the label.6
-
03
Uses chicken processing material
Broth recovers soluble material from chicken bones and parts. An industry report estimated 70,563 tons of chicken broth used in US pet food, indicating a supply stream at scale.4,5,9
-
04
Stores in several forms
Suppliers offer liquid, concentrate and powder. Dried powder ships and stores without refrigeration and mixes into wet or dry recipes.5,6
How much No typical amount per recipe is published; suppliers offer liquid, concentrated and powdered forms for wet foods, dry foods and toppers.5,6

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Brands say
Liquid broth adds water to a meal
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Adding liquid broth adds water. That is plain arithmetic, but it does not show that dogs drink more in total or become better hydrated. Powdered broth contributes little water until it is mixed with liquid.5,6

Brands say
Chicken broth makes food more tempting
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a choice experiment with 30 free-ranging dogs, bread with chicken extract was eaten before bread with water or plain bread. The test supports chicken flavor appeal, but did not test a finished dog food's broth dose.2
-
Brands say
Broth is a substantial protein source
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
One spray-dried sample measured 99.3% crude protein on a dry basis. In a 16-rooster assay, several of its amino acids digested less well than those from dried chicken meat. A finished food's contribution depends on how much broth it contains.1,10
-
Brands say
Broth collagen supports dogs' joints
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A supplier promotes chicken broth powder for joint health, but gives no dose or dog outcome for that claim. The broth study used a rooster digestibility assay, not a trial measuring joint pain or movement in dogs.5,10

Owners say
Chicken broth is safe for chicken-allergic dogs
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Ordinary broth contains chicken-derived protein. In a blinded crossover study, 12 dogs reacted to whole chicken; signs fell in 11 when they ate hydrolyzed chicken instead. Ordinary broth was not the tested hydrolyzed diet.3,4
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt supplies liquid and chicken flavor. Judge it by those jobs, while looking to the named meats, meals and finished food analysis to understand the recipe's protein. Its wet weight is not a measure of meat content.2,6,7
-
Q02
Does broth count as chicken?
YesThe name identifies a chicken source, which matters for a dog avoiding chicken. It does not tell you how much chicken protein remains after dilution or how much broth the manufacturer used.3,4,7
-
Q03
Does broth mean more protein?
Not necessarilyOne dried broth tested near pure protein, but an ingredient list gives weights, not the protein each item contributes. Read the finished food's protein guarantee alongside its other protein ingredients.1,7

Organic chicken broth
Matters for your dog A little
Organic Chicken Broth
What it means USDA's National Organic Program sets the rules: the chickens eat certified organic feed, have year-round outdoor access, and are never given antibiotics. It does not promise more protein, a stronger flavor, or a broth that is safe for a chicken-allergic dog.
For your dog The real difference is how the bird was raised. A review of 67 studies found organic meat had about 47% more omega-3 fat, but broth carries little fat, and no study has tested organic broth in dogs. Added hormones are banned in all US poultry, so that is no difference.1,11,12,13,14,15
