Who Makes It

Purina is made by Nestlé Purina PetCare, the pet food business of Nestlé, which is based in St. Louis, Missouri. Its dog food brands include Pro Plan, Purina ONE, Dog Chow, Beneful and Alpo. 1

Where It Is Made

Purina makes its food in company-owned factories. In August 2026 it opened a dry pet food plant in Batavia, Ohio, which it said became its 24th US manufacturing facility and produces Pro Plan, Purina ONE and Dog Chow. It also runs a wet pet food factory in Jefferson, Wisconsin, which it announced a $195 million expansion for in 2024. 2, 3

History

William H. Danforth started the business in 1894 as a feed company for farm animals, and it took the name Ralston Purina in 1902. Purina introduced Dog Chow in 1926. Nestlé bought Ralston Purina in December 2001 for $10.3 billion and merged it with Friskies PetCare to form Nestlé Purina PetCare. 4, 1

Worth Knowing

From late 2023, social media posts claimed that Purina foods were making pets sick. The FDA reviewed about 1,300 adverse event reports filed between November 2023 and April 2024. It could not confirm a product defect, and no recall was issued. Earlier, in 2023, Purina recalled some Pro Plan Veterinary Diets dry dog food because of elevated vitamin D. 5, 1
