Sodium Silico Aluminate

A flow aid with no nutrition payoff

Sodium silico aluminate is a fine mineral powder added to keep dry ingredients moving through production. Its value is easier mixing and dosing for the manufacturer. It supplies no meaningful nutrition or proven toxin protection to your dog.

What it is
A fine powder of sodium, aluminum and silicon compounds that keeps dry feed ingredients from sticking together.
Made from
Amorphous form: sodium silicate and aluminum sulfate solutions
Main job
Keeps dry powders flowing
Typical amount

Watch for
Toxin binding claims exceed the evidence
Not the same as
Table salt

Straight answer

Is Sodium Silico Aluminate safe for dogs?

Read it as a manufacturing aid

When it sits near the end of a kibble ingredient list, read it as a flow aid for powders. Judge the food by its main ingredients and nutritional analysis. This additive does not improve protein quality or prove toxin control. Do not pay extra for a toxin binding claim or reject a food for this name alone.

What it is

How it is made

Chemical suppliers make this powder for dry blending. In the synthetic amorphous route, mineral solutions react to form a solid. The solid is washed, dried and milled before feed makers add it to dry ingredients.2

  1. 01 // Source Mineral solutions The synthetic amorphous form starts with sodium silicate and aluminum sulfate dissolved in water.
  2. 02 // Process Solid forms The solutions react and particles of sodium aluminosilicate separate from the liquid.
  3. 03 // Process Washed and dried The particles are filtered and washed, then dried and milled to the desired size.
  4. 04 // Output Fine white powder The dry powder is ready for blending into feed premixes or other powdered ingredients.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

66-76

% silica

This is the silicon dioxide share of the specified dry powder, not a nutrient percentage in finished kibble.

Silicon dioxide 66-76%5
Aluminum oxide 9-13%5
Sodium oxide 4-7%5

AAFCO's ranges apply to its specified hydrated feed ingredient. EFSA also describes synthetic amorphous and crystalline sodium aluminosilicates with different oxide ratios, so a label cannot reveal the exact batch chemistry.2,5

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Keeps powders moving

A supplier says fine particles take up moisture and separate powder surfaces, limiting clumps in dry blends and blockages in handling equipment.8

  2. 02

    Eases recipe dosing

A steady flowing premix is easier to meter into a large recipe. This is a manufacturing advantage, not a proven change in a dog's health.7,8

  3. 03

    Cuts handling costs

A supplier markets faster production, less downtime and better package weight accuracy. Those are cost and scale reasons to use a flow aid.7

How much US rules cap it at 2% of finished feed, but none of the opened sources gives a typical dose in dog food.5,6

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

It stops dry ingredients from clumping

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Suppliers describe moisture uptake and easier powder flow. EFSA reviewed 5 laboratory study summaries but lacked the results needed to judge feed performance. The handling purpose is credible; controlled dog food performance data are missing.2,7,8

  2. Brands say

It protects dogs by binding mold toxins

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

FDA explicitly separates recognized anticaking use from toxin binding, calling the binder use not GRAS. EFSA's efficacy review cites five in vitro study summaries, but the results were withheld and the panel wrote these studies could not be further considered. The cited sources do not test this powder as a toxin binder in dogs.2,4

  3. Owners say

    Its aluminum content poisons dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

WHO's 30 day dog report tested 1, 3 and 10% sodium aluminosilicate diets. The lowest dose caused minor changes, and the facility judged only 0.5% free of effect, both below the 2% US cap. Clear kidney and blood changes appeared at the highest 10% dose.3,6

  4. Brands say

It is completely inert in dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 12 dog crossover measured blood silicon and aluminum after single doses, not long term health. WHO reported blood and kidney changes at the highest dietary dose, and minor changes even at the lowest tested dose. Calling every amount inert goes beyond those observations.1,3,8

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies no meaningful nutrition, but it has a job: keeping powdered ingredients loose enough to handle and measure. Its presence tells you about production, not the food's protein quality.5,7,8

  2. Q02

Does it mean the food has mold?

    No

Its recognized use is preventing dry ingredients from clumping. The name does not signal contaminated ingredients. FDA treats it as GRAS for anticaking but says adding it to bind fungal toxins is not a GRAS use.4,5

  3. Q03

Is it the same as salt?

    No

The word sodium makes the names sound related, but this is a powder made mainly of silicon dioxide, with aluminum and sodium oxides. It is added for flow, not seasoning.5
