Dried Plain Beet Pulp

Useful fiber without a firm stool guarantee

Dried plain beet pulp is the fibrous remainder of sugar beets after sugar extraction, dried without molasses added back. Dogs' gut bacteria ferment part of it. It changes stool texture, but a dog trial found softer stools than with other fiber sources.

How it is made

Sugar factories extract sweet juice from beet roots and have wet, fibrous pulp left over. Pressing and drying make that pulp easier to store and ship. Plain pulp has no molasses added back.4,5

Makers add beet pulp as a fermentable fiber made from a sugar industry leftover. In a 6-dog trial at 2.5% of the diet, it raised fecal short-chain fatty acids over cellulose or no added fiber. In a 12-dog trial it changed stool texture, toward softer stools. Labels list ingredients by weight, so where it appears below the main meats and grains, it is a smaller share: a fiber, not a protein or energy source.2,3,4,6

    Beet pulp brings both fermentable and less fermentable fiber. In a dog trial comparing fiber sources at equal inclusion, it produced softer stools than cellulose or Miscanthus grass.3
