Barley Grass

Growers cut barley for its green leaves before grain harvest. Processors wash, dry and grind the crop into powder. This is a deliberately harvested ingredient, not a leftover from milling barley flour.^4,5,7

1. 01 // Source Young barley The green leaves and stems are harvested before the plant produces mature grain.
2. 02 // Process Washed Harvested leaves are cleaned before drying, as described in a barley leaf powder production method.
3. 03 // Process Dried and ground Drying removes water from the greens, and milling turns them into a powder.
4. 04 // Output Leaf powder The food maker receives dry green powder as an ingredient separate from barley grain.

1. 01

   Adds leaf fiber

The powder supplies dietary fiber that holds water. In the dog trial, replacing rice powder with barley sprout powder raised the finished diet's crude fiber, though better stools were not demonstrated.^1,2,3

2. 02

   Makes a green claim

Pet supplement brands promote barley grass for digestion, skin and immunity. Its recognizable name gives a recipe a green ingredient, while the ingredient list does not disclose its exact dose.^6,9

3. 03

   Uses a harvested crop

Growers cut and processors dry the leaves specifically to make powder.^4,5

How much A controlled dog trial replaced some rice powder with 2.8% barley sprout powder for 16 weeks; that was an as fed recipe amount.¹

In a 14-beagle trial, dogs fed 2.8% barley sprout powder lost 7.2% of starting weight over 16 weeks. The replacement also raised dietary fiber. One small trial of a complete diet cannot show which change caused the loss.¹

In a 28-day rat trial, leaf powder increased dry fecal weight. The dog trial raised the diet's crude fiber from 2.0% to 2.8% dry matter but reported no stool improvement. A benefit for dogs remains unproven.^1,2

A leaf extract showed antioxidant activity in a laboratory assay. That measures a chemical reaction, not protection inside a dog. The 14-dog trial measured weight and other markers, not a disease benefit from antioxidants.^1,3,9
