Beef Fat

Useful calories, limited essential fatty acids

Beef fat is rendered fat separated from cattle tissue during meat processing. It adds digestible calories and coats kibble, but its modest linoleic acid content means the recipe needs other ingredients to meet a dog's essential fat needs.

Is Beef Fat safe for dogs?

Read the fat and calorie figures together

Find beef fat among the meat and other fat sources on the ingredient list. Its position shows weight in the recipe, not the finished food's fat level. Compare the guaranteed fat and calories, and look for another linoleic acid source. Use the assigned formula during a beef elimination trial.

What it is

How it is made

Meat plants send cattle trimmings and other unused tissues to renderers. Heating releases fat from the solids, creating a usable ingredient from material left after meat production. Separation removes water and particles before the fat reaches pet food plants.7,8,9

  1. 01 // Source Cattle tissues Fatty trimmings and other cattle tissues remain after cuts for the meat market are taken.
  2. 02 // Process Chopped and heated Rendering breaks up and heats the tissue, releasing fat from water and protein solids.
  3. 03 // Process Fat separated Pressing or centrifugation draws melted fat away from the solids, which enter another rendered product stream.
  4. 04 // Process Clarified Further separation removes remaining water and fine particles before the fat goes into storage.
  5. 05 // Output Rendered beef fat The separated fat reaches pet food plants for mixing into recipes or spraying onto dried kibble.

% crude fat

The rounded range in feed tables. Beef fat brings concentrated energy and almost no protein.

Crude fat 97.7-100%5
Oleic acid 245-478 g/kg5
Palmitic acid 223-354 g/kg5
Stearic acid 103-365 g/kg5
Linoleic acid 9-85 g/kg5
Gross energy 9,270-9,490 kcal/kg5

These ranges cover tallow from cattle and other ruminants, so they are context rather than a beef fat guarantee. Fat from different parts of a cattle carcass also has different fatty acid patterns.5,8

Why it is in the bag

A real calorie source, not filler

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Beef fat is nearly pure fat, about 9,380 kcal of gross energy per kg, so a few percent of the recipe adds many calories. Dog studies mixed tallow into diets at 6.5% and 13% and used it as a 5% kibble coating. Labels list ingredients by weight, and beef fat usually sits around 6th to 10th on the list, likely enough to add real calories rather than act as filler.1,2,5,12

  1. 01

    Raises calorie density

Fat adds energy with little bulk. A 10-dog study tested tallow and soybean oil each mixed into the diet at 6.5% and 13%, and dogs did not cut intake on the most energy-dense diets, an effect most marked in the 13% tallow group.1,5

  2. 02

    Coats dry kibble

Manufacturers spray warmed fat onto dried pieces to add energy and flavor. A preference test found that coating with beef tallow did not make it the favorite fat tested.2

  3. 03

    Uses meat plant leftovers

Rendering gives cattle fat left after meat production a market as a pet food ingredient. Its value comes from recovering usable fat from the remaining tissue.8,9

  4. 04

    Supplies some linoleic acid

Beef fat contains linoleic acid, but much less than many plant oils. Formulators must consider the whole recipe to meet a dog's essential fatty acid needs.5,6

How much Dog studies tested beef tallow mixed into the diet at 6.5% and 13%, and separately as a 5% fat coating sprayed onto kibble.1,2

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Beef fat gives dogs concentrated energy

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Tallow is nearly all fat, at about 9,380 kcal gross energy per kg. In a 10-dog study, dogs did not regulate their intake on the higher tallow diets and took in more energy. It supplies calories, not protein.1,5

  2. Brands say

Beef fat makes kibble taste better

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In paired preference tests with 30 dogs comparing three fats each coated onto kibble at 5%, beef tallow was eaten least, with a 44% preference rate against sunflower oil's 56%. No uncoated control was tested, so no study shows beef fat improves on plain kibble.2

  3. Brands say

Beef fat gives dogs a shinier coat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 9-week Waltham-authored trial improved coat measures with added zinc plus linoleic acid, not beef fat. Tallow averages 2.8% linoleic acid. That trial does not show that beef fat makes coats shine.4,5

  4. Owners say

    Beef fat causes pancreatitis

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

An 8-Beagle trial fed diets with 32 to 47% fat using canola oil and found no pancreatic lipase change. It tested neither beef fat nor vulnerable dogs. Dogs being treated for pancreatitis still need low fat food.3,10

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies energy dogs use and gives manufacturers a fat for coating kibble. It contributes almost no protein, so read it as a fat source, not evidence of beef meat.1,5

  2. Q02

Is beef fat the same as tallow?

    Mostly yes

Tallow may come from cattle or other ruminants. Beef fat names the cattle source, and ingredient rules require a named animal source to match what went into the fat.5,7

  3. Q03

Can a beef-allergic dog eat it?

    Not during testing

A tallow table rounds crude protein to zero, but that single measurement does not certify every batch free of protein traces. Keep a beef allergy elimination trial exclusive to its assigned diet.5,11

  4. Q04

    Does it provide omega 3?

    Very little

The tallow table lists 6.5 g/kg of alpha-linolenic acid and zero EPA or DHA. Beef fat is an energy source, not an omega 3 source. If you want omega 3 in the food, look for another ingredient that supplies it.5
