Oil of Rosemary
A fragrant oil with limited preservative proof
Oil of rosemary is the concentrated aromatic oil distilled from rosemary leaves and flowering tops. It gives kibble an herbal scent. A dog food trial tested it in an antioxidant blend, but never measured what the oil does alone.

Straight answer
Is Oil of Rosemary safe for dogs?
Read it as flavor, then check the fats
Oil of rosemary belongs near the end of an ingredient list. Check which fats the food uses and whether other antioxidants are listed. The oil's presence alone does not tell you how well the food resists rancidity or how long an opened bag stays fresh.
- Why it is in the food
- Herbal flavor
- Watch for
- Concentrated oil outside food

What it is
How it is made
Rosemary harvested for its fragrant leaves also supplies essential oil. Distillation carries volatile compounds away from the plant, leaving the bulk of the leaves behind. The condensed oil is separated for use as a flavoring.1,2,4
- 01 // Source Rosemary tops Leaves and flowering stems contain the volatile compounds responsible for rosemary's scent.
- 02 // Process Steam distilled Steam carries those compounds out of the plant material and into a cooling system.
- 03 // Process Oil separated The vapor condenses, and the essential oil is separated from the water.
- 04 // Output Rosemary oil The concentrated oil is measured into food or its fat coating as a flavoring.

37.1
% cineole
Average cineole by weight across 3 water-free rosemary oil samples. This aromatic compound is part of the oil's flavor, not a nutrient guarantee.
Why it is in the bag
There for flavor, in amounts too small to nourish
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add it as a flavoring. EFSA classes rosemary oil as a sensory additive and accepted its flavor role without further testing. EFSA assessed it at milligrams per kilogram of feed, and ingredient lists run from most to least by weight, so it often sits near the end and likely supplies no meaningful nutrient. One dog food trial used it in a preservative blend with clove and oregano oils and vitamin E, but did not test the oil alone.1,2,6
-
01
Adds herbal aroma
Distillation concentrates rosemary's volatile scent compounds. Feed assessors classify the oil as a flavoring, allowing a measured addition without adding bulky leaves.2,4
-
02
Joins antioxidant blends
A dog food trial added rosemary oil with clove oil, oregano oil and vitamin E to the fat coating. The blend preserved the food, but the trial did not isolate rosemary oil's contribution.1
-
03
Takes little recipe space
EFSA assessed milligram amounts per kilogram of complete feed for dogs. The oil is dosed sparingly, and the reviewed sources show no cost advantage over other flavorings.2
How much EFSA assessed 20.8 mg/kg of complete feed for dogs as unlikely to cause harm; that is a safety assessment, not a typical US recipe amount.2
Our read // The claims
What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.
-
Brands say
Rosemary oil keeps kibble fats fresh
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a 10-beagle trial, food oxidation measures matched BHT-treated food for a blend of rosemary, clove and oregano oils plus vitamin E. Rosemary oil was never tested alone, so its own share of the effect is unknown.1
-
Brands say
Rosemary oil gives dogs antioxidant protection
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A 10-beagle trial found lower blood markers of oxidation after dogs ate a blend of oils and vitamin E. A laboratory test also found 59.1% inhibition of oil oxidation. Neither result assigns a health benefit to rosemary oil alone.1,3
-
Brands say
Rosemary oil kills harmful bacteria in food
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Researchers tested the oil against 8 bacterial strains using plate and broth assays and found inhibition. They did not test whether the small amount used in finished dog food prevents contamination.3
-
Owners say
Rosemary oil in kibble causes seizures
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
EFSA judged 20.8 mg/kg of complete feed unlikely to harm dogs. That assessment was not a seizure trial. General warnings about concentrated essential oil exposures do not show that measured rosemary oil in kibble triggers seizures.2,7
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt has a flavoring job and takes up very little recipe space. At the amounts assessed for feed, it supplies no meaningful protein, fiber or other nutrient.2
-
Q02
Is it rosemary extract?
NoThe oil is distilled for volatile aroma compounds. Antioxidant rosemary extracts are made with solvents and assessed for carnosic acid and carnosol. Evidence for those extracts says nothing about the oil's preservative effect.4
-
Q03
Why is it near the end?
Small additionIngredient lists run from most to least by weight. Flavorings are minor additions, so rosemary oil belongs near the end. Its position does not tell you how long an opened bag will resist rancidity.2,6
-
Q04
Should seizure-prone dogs avoid it?
No evidenceThe reviewed evidence does not link rosemary oil at assessed feed levels to seizures in dogs. US rules recognize rosemary essential oil for its intended use, and EFSA assessed a measured feed level. Neither finding supports adding bottled oil to food.2,5,7
