Potassium Citrate
A useful potassium salt with limited stone proof
Potassium citrate is a manufactured salt of citric acid that supplies potassium and helps control acidity. At supplemental doses, it can raise a dog's urine pH, but its presence in a food does not show that the food prevents stones.
Role in the food Does a job- What it is
- A water soluble salt made by reacting citric acid with a potassium compound.
- Made from
- Fermented citric acid and a potassium base
- Main job
- Potassium and pH adjustment

- Watch for
- Extra potassium with impaired kidney function
- Not the same as
- Citric acid
Straight answer
Is Potassium Citrate safe for dogs?
Read it as a targeted mineral adjustment
Low on an ingredient list, potassium citrate signals a mineral and acidity adjustment. If a bag promises urinary benefits, check which stone type the complete diet targets. For a dog with a stone history or trouble clearing potassium, use urine and blood results to guide the choice.

What it is
How it is made
Commercial citric acid comes from sugar fermentation at industrial scale. Manufacturers react the purified acid with a potassium base and crystallize the salt. It is a manufactured food ingredient, not a fruit extract.7
- 01 // Source Sugar and potassium Sugar feeds citric acid fermentation; potassium hydroxide or carbonate supplies the potassium for the final salt.
- 02 // Process Ferment the sugar Selected microbes produce citric acid, which processors separate and purify from the fermentation mixture.
- 03 // Process React and crystallize Citric acid reacts with the potassium base, and potassium citrate crystallizes from the resulting solution.
- 04 // Output Potassium citrate White, water soluble crystals or granules are supplied for blending into food.

Why it is in the bag
A potassium and acidity tweak, not filler
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add it to supply potassium without sodium and to buffer acidity. At supplement doses it kept dog urine less acidic later in the day, though the average shift was small. When it sits low on the list, it is likely a small share of the food, since lists run by weight. A small amount still counts for a mineral, because the dry salt is about 38% potassium. It is not filler.1,8,9,11
-
01
Adjusts urinary acidity
After a dog eats it, potassium citrate can make urine less acidic. Formulators use it in urinary diets, but the complete recipe determines the final urine response.1,2,3
-
02
Adds potassium
The salt supplies potassium without adding sodium. It lets a formulator adjust a mineral target while also influencing acidity.8,9
-
03
Buffers the recipe
Food manufacturers use it for pH control and buffering. Industrial fermentation supplies the citric acid used to make this standardized ingredient.7,8
How much Dog studies tested supplements at 150 and 130 to 211 mg/kg body weight daily; those doses are not typical kibble inclusion rates.1,2

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.
-
Brands say
It supplies potassium to the food
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Potassium makes up about 38.3% of the dry salt. That is a real mineral contribution, but an ingredient list alone cannot tell you how much potassium the finished food contains.9
-
Vets say
It raises a dog's urine pH
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a 12 dog trial, average urine pH rose by 0.2 units, an insignificant change. A 7 dog trial found a larger rise at certain times. Dose, timing and the rest of the diet matter.1,2
-
Brands say
It prevents calcium oxalate stones
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In the 12 dog trial, 3 Miniature Schnauzers had lower urinary calcium oxalate supersaturation, a modeled risk marker. Veterinary consensus says properly designed trials measuring stone recurrence have not been published.1,3
-
Owners say
It dissolves existing calcium oxalate stones
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
The Merck Veterinary Manual says calcium oxalate stones in dogs do not dissolve with medical treatment. Potassium citrate has a possible role in a prevention plan after stone removal, not in clearing an existing stone.4
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt supplies potassium and controls acidity, both identifiable jobs. Its presence does not tell you whether the complete food produces the urine pH a particular dog needs.2,8,9
-
Q02
Is it the same as citric acid?
NoCitric acid is the starting material. Reacting it with a potassium base makes potassium citrate, a salt that supplies potassium and works as a buffer.7,8
-
Q03
Can it clear a bladder stone?
Not calcium oxalateCalcium oxalate stones require removal because medical treatment cannot dissolve them. Potassium citrate is considered for prevention in selected dogs after the stone type is known.3,4
-
Q04
Does more mean better urinary care?
NoThe dose must match the dog's urine findings. Dog trials measured changes at specific doses and times, while veterinary guidance considers potassium citrate for persistently acidic urine.1,2,3
