Capelin
Real fish protein with an uncertain omega payoff
Capelin is a small marine fish used in pet food for protein, fat and fish flavor. It contains the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA, but its place on an ingredient list cannot tell you whether your dog gets a useful dose.

Straight answer
Is Capelin safe for dogs?
Read the whole label beyond the fish
Capelin's list position tells you its weight relative to other ingredients when the food was made. It does not tell you its share of the finished protein or its EPA and DHA dose. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for daily feeding, and ask the maker for EPA and DHA amounts if joint support is your goal.

What it is
How it is made
Commercial fisheries catch capelin for frozen whole fish and roe. Rejected fish may go to meal and oil plants. Capelin listed as an ingredient is the fish, rather than the rendered meal.8,9,10,11
- 01 // Source Wild capelin Fishing vessels take this small marine fish during a seasonal commercial fishery.
- 02 // Process Sorted Processors grade fresh fish by weight and separate males, females and mixed catches.
- 03 // Process Frozen Fish selected for whole-fish sale are frozen; rejected capelin may enter fish meal and oil production.
- 04 // Output Capelin fish Fresh or frozen fish reaches the pet food plant under temperature control, ready for mixing.

About two-thirds of the analyzed whole fish was protein after water was removed. Its wet label weight does not reveal its protein contribution to a recipe.
Why it is in the bag
A real fish protein, not filler, near the top
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add whole capelin for fish protein, fat and fish flavor, and its fat carries some EPA and DHA. Near the top of a wet food's list, it is likely one of the food's main protein sources. Lists run by weight, though, and whole fish holds a lot of water, so the label shows neither capelin's real share of the protein nor its omega-3 dose.5,12

01
Adds fish protein
Whole capelin supplies animal protein. Because fresh fish carries substantial water, its ingredient-list weight does not show how much of the finished food's protein came from capelin.5,12
-
02
Adds marine fats
Capelin fat contains EPA and DHA. A manufacturer gets those fats with the fish, but the ingredient list gives no EPA or DHA amount from capelin alone.5,12
-
03
Uses existing fishery supply
Fishers already sell frozen whole capelin, while rejected fish enter meal and oil production. Pet food makers can buy from that seasonal supply; a price advantage is not documented.8,9,10
How much A typical capelin amount is not published; an ingredient list gives weight order, not capelin's percentage or EPA and DHA dose.12,13

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Brands say
Capelin supplies real animal protein
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A whole-fish analysis lists 65.7% crude protein on a dry matter basis. Capelin is a protein ingredient. Its position on a wet-food label still cannot show how much protein it supplies in that recipe.5,12

Brands say
Capelin omega-3s ease arthritic joints
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

- Thin
- None
A blinded trial enrolled 78 dogs and found better arthritis signs after dosing EPA and DHA at 69 mg per kilogram of body weight daily. It tested oil, not capelin, whose dose in a listed food is unknown.1,5,12

Brands say
Capelin is a safe novel protein for allergic dogs
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A review found fish reactions in 5 of 297 dogs with documented food reactions, but did not assess capelin separately. A fish-allergic dog's history matters more than a claim that this fish is novel.2

Owners say
Capelin has no mercury or other contaminants
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

- Thin
- None
Four Canadian capelin samples averaged 0.02 ppm mercury. Monitoring also detects other pollutants in capelin, generally at low levels. Low measurements are not zero, and neither survey certifies a pet food batch.6,7
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoWhole capelin supplies protein and fat, which have nutritional jobs. The ingredient list cannot tell you how much of either nutrient came from capelin in a particular food.5,12
-
Q02
Is capelin the same as fish meal?
NoCapelin names the fish supplied fresh or frozen. Fish meal has been cooked and dried before shipment. The two therefore carry very different amounts of water when a manufacturer weighs them.5,9,11
-
Q03
Will it provide enough omega-3?
Can't tellCapelin contains EPA and DHA, but its ingredient-list position gives no dose. The dog arthritis trial measured daily intake of those fats. Ask the maker for the finished food's EPA and DHA amounts.1,5,12
