Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is the main saleable product of crushing oil-type sunflower seeds. Processors press prepared seeds and may extract more oil from the remaining solids. Those solids become meal, while the liquid oil is often refined.^9,11

   Supplies essential fat

   Conventional sunflower oil adds linoleic acid, which a complete dog food must supply. It also raises the recipe's energy without adding protein or fiber.^6,8

2. 02

   Coats dried kibble

   Manufacturers can spray oil onto dried kibble. In one preference test, dogs chose a sunflower oil coating more often than animal fat coatings; another test found no advantage over chicken oil.^1,2

   Uses an oilseed supply

   Commercial sunflower crushing produces oil as its main saleable product and meal as a separate outlet. That supply gives formulators a plant fat option, but the label reveals no purchase price.^7,9

   A feed table gives 587 mg/kg as the dry-matter vitamin E average, not a fixed value. One analysis found tocopherols fell from 842 to 621 mg/kg during refining. Neither measured protection in dogs eating finished kibble.^6,11

   Omega-6 sunflower oil causes inflammation

   Conventional oil is rich in omega-6 linoleic acid. A 10-dog trial of a higher-linoleic diet measured skin lipids and water loss, not inflammatory disease, and did not test sunflower oil. The ingredient's presence alone shows no inflammatory harm.^3,6
