Salmon Broth
Useful moisture and flavor, uncertain salmon nutrition
Salmon broth is liquid made by cooking salmon flesh or parts. It adds water and fish flavor to a recipe. The name alone does not tell you how much salmon protein or omega-3 fat your dog gets.
- What it is
- Liquid made by cooking salmon flesh or parts, then separating the liquid from the fish solids.
- Made from
- Salmon flesh or parts and water
- Main job
- Moisture and fish flavor
- Typical amount
- Varies; one disclosed wet recipe uses 25.6%
- Watch for
- Dogs with a diagnosed fish allergy
- Not the same as
- Salmon oil
Straight answer
Is Salmon Broth safe for dogs?
Read broth as liquid, then find the salmon
If salmon broth sits above salmon, remember that ingredients are ranked by weight when added and broth brings water with it. Look for actual salmon or another named protein nearby, then check the food's nutrient analysis and adequacy statement. Treat broth as moisture and flavor, not an omega-3 supplement.

What it is
How it is made
Fish processors cook salmon for food and other products. Cooking leaves a flavored liquid alongside the fish solids. Using that liquid as broth gives processors another saleable ingredient.5,6,8
- 01 // Source Salmon flesh or parts Salmon supplies the fish material; the ingredient name does not identify the cuts used.
- 02 // Process Cooked with water Cooking moves soluble fish compounds into the surrounding liquid.
- 03 // Process Liquid separated The cooking liquid is collected apart from the fish solids.
- 04 // Output Salmon broth The liquid is added to food for moisture and fish flavor.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
10.49
% solids
A defatted fish broth from canned-fish production had this much dry matter as poured. It was not an analysis of salmon broth.
Why it is in the bag
What the manufacturer gets
-
01
Adds recipe moisture
Broth supplies liquid to wet food and toppers. The water counts toward a dog's intake when the dog eats the food.1,5
-
02
Adds fish flavor
Cooking transfers fish compounds into liquid. A brand sells the resulting taste as a reason to use broth, but dog preference for salmon broth itself has not been tested.2,10
-
03
Uses a processing stream
Simmering fish produces broth as a by-product of canned fish production. Broths in general are used in pet food manufacturing, giving processors a use for this cooking liquid.5,9
How much One disclosed wet dog food lists salmon broth at 25.6% of its recipe; a single formula does not show a typical amount.11
Our read // The claims
What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Brands say
Salmon broth adds water to a meal
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Broth is mostly liquid, so adding it raises a meal's water content, plain arithmetic. A 16-dog, 56-day trial found a different liquid, a nutrient-enriched water, raised total water intake and diluted urine; it did not test broth, so broth's effect on hydration is unproven.1,5
-
Brands say
Salmon broth makes picky dogs eat
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Dogs preferred a diet containing 10% salmon protein hydrolysate in one feeding test. Hydrolysate is a different ingredient. No opened dog trial tested salmon broth, so its fish flavor does not guarantee better intake.2,10
-
Brands say
Its omega-3s improve skin and coat
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A 16-dog crossover trial found coat benefits from a marine oil supplement, each millilitre of oil holding 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA. No cited salmon-broth analysis gives an EPA or DHA amount, so the oil result cannot be assigned to broth.3,5
-
Brands say
Broth provides concentrated salmon nutrients
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A brand calls broth a concentrated nutrient source. One measured, defatted fish broth was 10.49% solids and 7.46% protein as poured. It is not salmon broth, so it cannot show the nutrient content of a salmon-broth product.5,10
-
Owners say
Salmon broth is safe for fish-allergic dogs
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a fish-allergy study, 27 dogs had reacted to cod challenges. Serum from some cod-reactive dogs also bound salmon proteins, though researchers did not challenge them with salmon. Broth is not an allergy-safe shortcut for a dog with a diagnosed fish trigger.4

What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt supplies liquid and fish flavor, both useful jobs in a wet recipe. Its place on the ingredient list does not show how much salmon nutrition it supplies, so judge the whole food's analysis.5,7
-
Q02
Does broth mean more salmon?
Not necessarilyIngredients are listed by weight when added. A watery ingredient can rank high without contributing the same amount of fish solids. Look separately for salmon or another named protein, then check the food's nutrient analysis.5,7
-
Q03
Can I use kitchen fish stock?
Check it firstKitchen stock may contain onion or garlic. The ASPCA warns that both can damage dogs' red blood cells. Use unseasoned fish liquid if you make a topper, and keep the dog's regular diet in place.12
