Betaine Anhydrous
A methyl donor with unproven health extras
Betaine anhydrous is a purified compound made from sugar beet processing streams or by chemical synthesis. Dogs use it to move methyl groups through normal metabolism. Feeding studies show changes in blood markers, but stronger gut, immune and kidney claims remain unproven.
Role in the food Supporting nutrient- What it is
- A dry, concentrated form of betaine that supplies methyl groups used in normal metabolism.
- Made from
- Sugar beet streams or chemical feedstocks
- Main job
- Supplies methyl groups
- Typical amount
- Commercial amount unpublished; dog trials fed 0.2 to 0.5%
- Watch for
- A separate betaine supplement added to food
- Not the same as
- Betaine hydrochloride
Straight answer
Is Betaine Anhydrous safe for dogs?
Read it as an additive, not a verdict
Betaine near the vitamin and mineral ingredients signals a small metabolic addition. Judge the food by its main protein and fat sources and whether it is formulated as a complete diet. Do not choose it for a kidney or immune promise based on betaine alone.

What it is
How it is made
Sugar refining leaves molasses containing betaine after much of the sugar is recovered. For beet-derived betaine, processors separate and crystallize that compound as an additive. Feed-grade betaine anhydrous can also be made by chemical synthesis.6,7,8
- 01 // Source Beet molasses Sugar refining leaves a syrup containing betaine alongside sugar and other dissolved compounds.
- 02 // Process Separate betaine Chromatography separates a betaine-rich stream while processors recover more sugar from the molasses.
- 03 // Process Crystallize The purified solution is crystallized under conditions that produce the anhydrous form.
- 04 // Output Dry betaine Concentrated crystals reach feed plants as an additive; some preparations also contain an anticaking agent.

99.2
% betaine
The lowest dry-matter purity measured in the refined anhydrous samples. This ingredient is chiefly one compound, though feed preparations can contain an anticaking agent.
Why it is in the bag
A small methyl donor, not a health fix
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add betaine as a methyl donor: dogs use it to turn homocysteine back into methionine. In one trial, foods with added betaine carried about 0.5% and raised related blood metabolites [1,2]. Labels list ingredients by weight [9], so when betaine sits far down the list, it is likely a minor addition. Foods do not publish whether they reach trial doses, and the gut, kidney and immune extras remain unproven [3,4].1,2,3,4,9
-
01
Supplies methyl groups
Dogs use betaine when converting homocysteine to methionine. Controlled feeding studies found higher blood levels of related metabolites after betaine was added.1,2
-
02
Supports specialty formulas
Its methyl-donor role and effects in cell experiments give formulators a reason to test it in gut and immune diets. Benefits in living dogs remain uncertain.2,4,5
-
03
Uses a refinery stream
Separating beet molasses yields betaine alongside more recoverable sugar. That gives sugar processors another product from an existing stream; chemical synthesis supplies an alternative.7,8
How much Dog trials added 0.2 to 0.5% betaine to food; a usual amount across commercial dog foods has not been published.1,2,3,4

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Controlled feeding studies lasting 60 and 90 days found higher circulating dimethylglycine and methionine after betaine was added. That supports its methyl-donor role, but a blood-marker change alone does not show better health.1,2

A 21-day trial in 20 Poodles found changes in fecal bacteria and inflammatory markers with added betaine, but no difference in stool score. Canine cell experiments suggest a barrier effect; better digestion in dogs remains unproven.4,5

In 28 dogs with early kidney disease, diets containing betaine and added soluble fibers lowered creatinine during 10-week feeding periods. Both ingredients changed together, so the study cannot assign the result to betaine or show slower disease progression.3

A 90-day study in 32 dogs found an altered immune-cell response when betaine and carnitine were combined. Supplier-authored experiments also found effects in canine cells. Neither result shows that betaine alone prevents illness.2,5
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt has a defined metabolic job: supplying methyl groups. Dog studies measured the expected changes in blood metabolites. Those results support its use as an additive, though they do not justify choosing a food for broad health promises.1,2
-
Q02
Is it the same as beet pulp?
NoBeet pulp is a fibrous ingredient from sugar processing. Betaine anhydrous is a concentrated compound used for its metabolic role, and it can also be synthesized. The ingredient name alone does not reveal which production route was used.6,7
-
Q03
Will it treat kidney disease?
No proofThe kidney study tested betaine and soluble fibers together. Its lower creatinine readings do not show that betaine alone treats kidney disease, and the study did not demonstrate slower progression.3
