Cobalt Carbonate
A cobalt source without a proven dog benefit
Cobalt carbonate is a mineral salt added to feed through trace mineral premixes. It supplies cobalt, the metal at the center of vitamin B12, but dogs get little use from the B12 their gut microbes make. It does not replace a B12 supplement.
Role in the food Supporting nutrient- What it is
- An inorganic mineral salt added to animal feed in small amounts as a source of cobalt.
- Made from
- Cobalt salt and sodium carbonate solutions
- Main job
- Adds cobalt to a premix
- Typical amount
- Not given in the cited sources
- Watch for
- It does not replace vitamin B12
- Not the same as
- Vitamin B12
Straight answer
Is Cobalt Carbonate safe for dogs?
Read past the salt and check B12
Cobalt carbonate near the end of a list signals a small mineral addition. The name does not tell you its dose or whether the food supplies vitamin B12. Look for a separate B12 source and the food's nutritional adequacy statement. Give this cobalt line no credit for a proven benefit to dogs.

What it is
How it is made
Mineral processors react a dissolved cobalt salt with sodium carbonate to make cobalt carbonate. They separate and wash the solid, then dry it for use in mineral blends. Feed makers use premixes to distribute small additions through a batch.5,9,10
- 01 // Source Cobalt solution A dissolved cobalt salt, such as cobalt sulfate, supplies the metal for the reaction.
- 02 // Process Carbonate added Sodium carbonate solution reacts with the cobalt solution, forming solid cobalt carbonate.
- 03 // Process Separated and washed The solid is filtered from the liquid and washed with water.
- 04 // Output Dry mineral powder The solid is dried and ground before it is blended into a feed mineral premix.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
49
% cobalt
The feed table's elemental cobalt value is about half the dry salt. It measures cobalt, not the finished vitamin B12.
Why it is in the bag
A trace mineral dogs have little use for
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add it as a cobalt source in the trace mineral blend. It is not bulk: ingredients are listed by weight, and it sits down among the minerals. The nutrient value to the dog is small. Dogs' gut microbes make vitamin B12 from cobalt past the point where B12 is absorbed, so the dog gains little. The nutrient that counts is finished vitamin B12, which a label lists separately.2,6
-
01
Adds measurable cobalt
Cobalt makes up about half the dry salt, so a small addition raises the feed's cobalt total. That does not show how much usable vitamin B12 a dog receives.2,5
-
02
Fits mineral premixes
Feed suppliers market cobalt carbonate for premixes. Blending it with other trace minerals helps distribute a small addition through a large feed batch; that mixing convenience is not a dog health benefit.10
-
03
Uses little recipe mass
Its concentrated cobalt content means a premix needs little raw salt. That is practical for feed production, although the opened sources show no cost comparison with other cobalt ingredients.5,10
How much A feed supplier calls the dose small, but the opened sources give no typical cobalt carbonate amount for dog food.10

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Cobalt carbonate supplies cobalt
Evidence

The feed table lists 49% cobalt on a dry matter basis. Adding the salt therefore adds cobalt. That arithmetic does not show a vitamin B12 benefit for dogs.2,5

It boosts vitamin B12 in dogs
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

- None
A randomized trial treated 46 dogs with finished vitamin B12, not cobalt carbonate. Dogs' gut microbes make B12 beyond its main absorption site, so a cobalt salt is no substitute for the vitamin.1,2

Evidence

An EFSA assessment found no need to add cobalt for animals such as dogs that cannot use it to make enough B12. The nutrient a dog needs supplied is vitamin B12 itself.2,3

Any cobalt carbonate in food damages the heart
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

A dog experiment found heart injury after repeated cobalt chloride infusions, including in 5 dogs eating a normal diet. It tested a different compound and delivery route, so it cannot show harm from a trace food addition.8

Critics say
It is just filler
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

The feed table shows no protein, fat or starch, and suppliers describe a small dose in mineral premixes. It does not bulk up food. The fair criticism is the lack of a demonstrated cobalt benefit for dogs.3,5,10
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt is a concentrated mineral addition, used in small amounts through a premix. It does not bulk up the recipe. The useful question is why cobalt was added when dogs need finished vitamin B12.2,3,5,10
-
Q02
Is this vitamin B12?
NoCobalt carbonate contains cobalt atoms, not the finished vitamin. Look for a separate vitamin B12 supplement on the label if you want to know whether the maker added B12.2,6
-
Q03
Should I reject this food?
Not automaticallyThe ingredient list does not give its dose, and the dog heart experiment used injected cobalt chloride rather than food. Check the food's nutritional adequacy statement and its vitamin B12 source instead.6,7,8
