Dried Organic Kelp
An iodine source to dose with care, not a tonic
Dried kelp is brown seaweed, washed up into a mineral-heavy powder that carries a lot of iodine. In a dog's food it adds iodine and salts. Its one tested benefit, slower tartar buildup, comes from a single branded seaweed fed at a set daily dose.
- What it is
- Brown seaweed, harvested from the sea, then milled and dried into a powder or meal. Organic means certified harvest and handling.
- Made from
- Brown seaweeds such as rockweed or Laminaria
- Main job
- Iodine and mineral source
- Typical amount
- Not published; a dental trial fed 50 mg per kg body weight
- Watch for
- Iodine stacking from several kelp products
- Not the same as
- Spirulina, a blue-green alga
Straight answer
Is Dried Organic Kelp safe for dogs?
Count the kelp products, not the kelp claims
Kelp belongs near the end of a list, where a small amount supplies iodine. In a topper served over a complete food, it adds iodine the base food already provides. Feed one kelp product at a time, ignore thyroid claims, and treat dental claims as true only for the tested branded dose.

What it is
How it is made
Rockweed, often sold as kelp, is cut in Norway, Ireland and Iceland for alginate, farm feed and fertilizer. Kelp meal is an old feed additive, common on US organic dairy farms.1,2
- 01 // Source Wild brown seaweed Rockweed or Laminaria is cut from the shore and shallow water and brought in wet.
- 02 // Process Handled fast Fresh seaweed is mostly water and turns moldy quickly, so it must be processed soon after harvest.
- 03 // Process Hammer milled Wet seaweed passes through hammer mills with smaller and smaller screens until it is fine particles.
- 04 // Process Drum dried The particles enter a drum dryer at 700 to 800°C and leave at no more than 70°C.
- 05 // Output Dried kelp meal A dry meal of about 88% dry matter, high in ash and iodine, ready for blending.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
1.1
% iodine
The most iodine Feedipedia reports for Laminaria kelp, 11 times rockweed's ceiling. Which kelp is in the bag sets the iodine dose, and labels rarely name it.
Why it is in the bag
What the manufacturer gets
-
01
Supplies iodine
Brown seaweeds pull iodine from seawater, Laminaria by more than 30,000 times. Up to 1.1% of dry Laminaria is iodine, so a small amount carries a large dose.1

02
A dental selling point
Four SwedenCare ProDen PlaqueOff rockweed products for dogs, from bites and chews to bones and a powder, carry the VOHC plaque and tartar seal. The seal covers those products, not kelp as an ingredient.3,4
-
03
Cheap mineral additive
About a fifth of dry kelp is ash, mostly salts. Farms use kelp meal as an additive, not as a source of protein or energy, and pet recipes use it the same way.1,2
How much No recipe level is published; the 90-day dental trial fed 0.05 g of rockweed per kg of body weight daily, given as treats.3

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Kelp reduces plaque and tartar on dogs' teeth

Evidence
- Strong

- Thin
- None
In a 60-dog, 90-day placebo trial funded by the maker, branded rockweed treats left calculus 35% lower at day 30, 22% at day 60 and 20% at day 90. Plaque at day 90 scored 1.67 against 2.71. Kelp in a food was never tested.3
-
Brands say
A broad range of trace minerals
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

- Thin
- None
The minerals are real: rockweed is about 22.5% ash, with potassium at 24 g/kg dry matter. A complete food already meets mineral needs, and no study shows a dog gaining from the small extra amount.2
-
Critics say
Kelp is full of toxic arsenic
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Seaweed does carry arsenic, but mostly as arsenosugars; inorganic arsenic was 50 to over 600 times more toxic in tests, and it is undetectable in most seaweeds. Hijiki is the high-inorganic exception, not kelp.1,8

Brands say
Natural iodine supports your dog's thyroid
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Over 95% of canine hypothyroidism comes from the gland itself being destroyed, which iodine cannot fix. In puppies, a diet with 5.6 mg potassium iodide per kg caused hypothyroidism. More iodine is not better.6,7

What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt is used in tiny amounts as an iodine and mineral additive, not to add bulk, protein or calories. The fair worry runs the other way: it is potent, so the dose matters more than the presence.1
-
Q02
Will kelp in food clean my dog's teeth?
Not provenThe dental trial used one branded rockweed product, fed daily at a dose set by body weight. A topper with kelp of an unnamed species, at an unstated amount, has not been tested for teeth.3,4
-
Q03
Should a hypothyroid dog get kelp?
NoMost hypothyroid dogs have an immune-damaged or shrunken thyroid, so extra iodine does not restore it. Excess iodine caused hypothyroidism in puppies. Thyroid disease is treated with medication, not seaweed.6,7
