Fenugreek Seed

Growers raise fenugreek for its seeds and leaves, which are used as spices. The seed is the crop, not a processing leftover. After harvest, growers separate and clean the seeds for storage or grinding.^2,5,6

   Fenugreek has a strong, maple-like smell. A dog food brand identifies flavor as a purpose, though that does not show dogs prefer food containing it.^7,10

   The seed's gum absorbs water and thickens mixtures. One food maker says it uses fenugreek seed as a binder in a wet dog food.^4,11

   Draws on spice supply

   India leads commercial fenugreek production. That gives food makers an existing seed supply, but the opened sources show no cost saving for dog food.⁵

   A 1984 abstract fed a defatted seed fraction, not whole seed, to dogs for 8 days. It lowered basal glucose in normal dogs. In diabetic dogs it was added to insulin and reduced hyperglycemia, not tested alone. Whole seed in food is unproven.^1,11

   The seed has water-binding gum, and a brand promotes it for bowel regularity. The gum-rich endosperm is about 30% of seed dry weight. Among the sources reviewed here, no dog study fed whole seed and measured stools.^4,10
