Hydrolyzed Chicken Flavor

A useful flavor with an allergy caveat

Hydrolyzed chicken flavor is made from chicken tissue whose proteins have been broken into smaller pieces. Its job is to make food more appealing to dogs. The word hydrolyzed does not guarantee safety for a dog with a chicken allergy.

Role in the food Does a job
What it is
A chicken-derived flavor made by breaking tissue proteins into smaller peptides and soluble material.
Made from
Chicken tissue, sometimes including liver
Main job
Make food more appealing
Typical amount
0.7 to 1% in a published kibble coating test
Watch for
A diagnosed chicken allergy
Not the same as
Chicken fat

Straight answer

Is Hydrolyzed Chicken Flavor safe for dogs?

Read it as flavor and check the formula

Expect it below the main protein and starch ingredients, where a small flavor addition belongs. Look above it to see what supplies the food's protein and fat. For a dog with a diagnosed chicken allergy, judge the exact food with the clinician managing the diet trial; hydrolyzed alone is not a safety guarantee.

What it is

How it is made

Chicken processing leaves tissue after retail cuts are removed. Flavor producers use enzymes to break proteins in that tissue into smaller pieces, creating a savory liquid that may be dried for pet food.4,5,6

  1. 01 // Source Chicken tissue Remaining carcass tissue or organs such as liver provide protein for the flavor ingredient.
  2. 02 // Process Enzymes added Protease enzymes break larger chicken proteins into smaller peptides and release soluble material.
  3. 03 // Process Solids separated Filtering can remove insoluble material and much of the fat from the liquid hydrolysate.
  4. 04 // Output Liquid or powder The hydrolysate reaches a pet food plant as a liquid flavor or a dried powder for coating kibble.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

52-68

% protein

Two experimental chicken carcass hydrolysates spanned this range before and after filtration. Their composition does not specify the protein in every commercial flavor.

Crude protein 51.9-67.7%4
Crude fat 1.3-25.9%4
Ash 7.3-14.6%4

These figures come from experimental carcass hydrolysates, not a guaranteed analysis of this named flavor. Filtering removed fat and insoluble material, so processing alone changed the dry matter figures sharply.4

Why it is in the bag

There to make dogs eat it, not protein

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Makers add it so dogs accept the food. A palatability patent notes that even a nutritious food is of little value if the animal refuses it, and its dog tests found chicken liver hydrolysate raised preference in several recipes. A kibble coating patent defines a palatant as something added mainly to improve acceptance. Labels list ingredients by weight, so every ingredient above it outweighs it; look there for the food's protein.5,6,7

  1. 01

    Improves food preference

Chicken liver hydrolysate changed which kibble dogs chose in manufacturer preference tests. The result depended on the recipe and the other ingredients used with it.5

  2. 02

    Uses remaining chicken tissue

Chicken processing leaves carcass material after retail cuts are removed. Hydrolysis gives producers a flavor use for that lower-value stream.4

  3. 03

    Needs a small coating

A manufacturer tested spray-dried hydrolyzed chicken at 0.7 to 1% of finished kibble. In its tests, the coating method affected how much palatant was needed.6

  4. 04

    Adds flavor to kibble

A coating puts the hydrolysate on the outside of dry kibble, where a dog encounters it first. Producers can also mix liver hydrolysate into wet food.5,6

How much One manufacturer tested spray-dried hydrolyzed chicken coatings at 0.7, 0.8 and 1% of finished kibble.6

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Chicken hydrolysate makes kibble more appealing

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In manufacturer two-bowl tests with 25 dogs, chicken liver hydrolysate won in several recipes and lost in another. It is a useful palatant, but those tests do not show that every dog will prefer every food containing it.5

  2. Brands say

This flavor improves a dog's gut health

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 10-dog study found changes in some fecal measures when chicken hydrolysates supplied 5 or 25% of a diet. It did not test this flavor at a coating dose or show a health benefit from that dose.3,6

  3. Owners say

Hydrolysis makes chicken safe for every allergic dog

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a blinded trial, 4 of 10 chicken-allergic dogs had itching flares on a hydrolyzed chicken liver diet. Another small trial found fewer signs in 11 of 12 dogs fed hydrolyzed chicken. Neither tested this flavor by itself.1,2

  4. Brands say

The flavor adds meaningful animal protein

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Experimental chicken hydrolysates contained about 52 to 68% protein on a dry basis, but a kibble coating test used hydrolyzed chicken at only 0.7 to 1% of the food. This line is not a main protein source.4,6

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No, it's flavor

It has a job: making food more appealing. Chicken liver hydrolysate changed preference in dog tests, though results varied by recipe. Its small tested coating dose makes it a flavor addition, not a main nutrient source.5,6

  2. Q02

Is it safe with chicken allergy?

    Not guaranteed

The label does not reveal the remaining peptide sizes or show that this particular flavor was tested in allergic dogs. A hydrolyzed chicken liver diet still caused itching flares in 4 of 10 dogs with proven chicken reactions.1

  3. Q03

Does it count as chicken meat?

    No

It comes from chicken tissue, but the label identifies it as a flavor ingredient. Read the other ingredients and the food's nutrient analysis to judge its protein sources; this flavor line cannot tell you how much meat the recipe contains.4,7
