Sage Extract

A food antioxidant, not a dog supplement

Sage extract concentrates compounds pulled from sage leaves. Food makers use it to slow fat oxidation or add herbal flavor. A study measured less oxidation in stored poultry pâté, but the evidence does not show a health benefit for dogs eating it.

Straight answer

Is Sage Extract safe for dogs?

Read it as a small preservation ingredient

Sage extract near the end of a list, beside other minor additives, is there for flavor or fat protection. Look higher up for the protein and fat sources that shape the food. Do not choose a bag for a promised antioxidant benefit to your dog.

Why it is in the food
Protect fats from oxidation

What it is

How it is made

Herb processors dry and mill sage leaves, then use a solvent or pressurized carbon dioxide to recover selected compounds. Removing the liquid concentrates them for use as a food additive.1,2,3

  1. 01 // Source Dried sage leaves Processors start with dried leaves of common culinary sage and mill them before extraction.
  2. 02 // Process Compounds extracted Ethanol and water recover rosmarinic acid; pressurized carbon dioxide recovers carnosic acid and carnosol.
  3. 03 // Process Liquid removed Plant solids are separated from the liquid, which is then removed to concentrate the recovered compounds.
  4. 04 // Output Sage extract The concentrated preparation reaches the food maker with a composition shaped by its extraction method.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

120

g/kg extract

The high end for carnosic acid in laboratory carbon dioxide extracts. It describes the extract, not an amount in dog food.

Carnosic acid 0.3-120 g/kg2
Carnosol 0.5-65.5 g/kg2
Rosmarinic acid 23.4 g/kg3

The first 2 rows describe carbon dioxide extracts; the rosmarinic acid row describes a dried ethanol and water extract. These are different preparations, so the figures cannot be added into one formula.2,3

Why it is in the bag

A small preservative and flavor, not a nutrient

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Sage extract is in the food to slow fat oxidation. In a poultry pâté experiment, 2 g/kg cut measured lipid oxidation by about 32% during storage; dry dog food was not tested. The FDA lists the sage herb as a flavoring agent, so the extract likely adds some herbal flavor too. On labels it tends to sit far down the list among minor additives, likely too little to change the food's nutrition. It is not bulk filler.1,4,5

  1. 01

    Slows fat oxidation

Sage compounds interrupt reactions that make fats stale. In a poultry pâté experiment, extract reduced measured lipid oxidation during storage. Dry dog food was not tested.1

  2. 02

    Adds herbal flavor

The FDA lists sage as a flavoring agent for human food. That supports its flavoring role, but does not show whether dogs prefer food containing sage extract.5

  3. 03

    Treats a whole batch

A poultry pâté experiment used 2 g of concentrated extract per kilogram of food. At that scale it serves as an additive, not a meaningful nutrient source.1

How much A preservation experiment used 2 g/kg in poultry pâté; it did not determine an inclusion amount for dog food.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Sage extract keeps fats from going stale

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a controlled poultry pâté experiment, extract reduced measured lipid oxidation by 32% after 28 days. That supports a food preservation role, though the experiment did not test dry dog food or its shelf life.1

  2. Brands say

Sage extract protects your dog's cells

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Laboratory carbon dioxide extracts quenched radicals in a chemical assay. That shows activity outside the body, not absorption or a health effect in dogs eating food with sage extract.2

  3. Brands say

Sage extract kills harmful bacteria in the gut

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A dried sage extract inhibited tested bacteria in laboratory broth at 1 mg/mL. The test did not feed dogs or show that sage extract reaches an effective concentration in their gut.3

  4. Critics say

    Sage extract is just filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A preservation experiment used 2 g/kg of extract and measured less fat oxidation. That is a technical job, not an attempt to bulk up the food. A label does not reveal the actual dose.1,4

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Its useful job is slowing fat oxidation, not supplying bulk or protein. Ingredient lists put small additives near the end, where sage extract belongs. Judge the food's nutrition by its main ingredients.1,4

  2. Q02

Is sage essential oil the same?

    No

An extract made for food is different from a bottle of concentrated essential oil. The ASPCA lists the sage plant as nontoxic to dogs but warns that concentrated essential oils can harm pets.6,7

  3. Q03

Does it help my dog directly?

    No proof

The cited evidence measures oxidation in stored food and antioxidant activity in a laboratory assay. Neither measures a health benefit in dogs fed sage extract, so read it as a food additive.1,2
