Pea Flour

Useful starch and protein, with an open heart question

Pea flour is dried peas ground into powder, with starch and protein still together. It supplies energy and plant protein to kibble. Watch how much of the ingredient list is made up of pea flour and other pulse ingredients.

Role in the food Main nutrition
Pea Flour
What it is
Ground dried peas that retain starch and protein, unlike fractions separated to make pea protein or pea starch.
Made from
Mature, dried field peas

Several pulse ingredients high on one list
Not the same as
Pea protein concentrate

Straight answer

Is Pea Flour safe for dogs?

Count every pea ingredient on the bag

Find pea flour, then look for peas, pea protein, pea starch and other pulses nearby. Several high on the list signal a recipe built heavily on legumes, even if meat appears first. Judge the complete food and its nutritional adequacy, not the flour entry alone.

What it is

How it is made

Pulse mills turn mature, dried peas into flour for food and feed. They may remove the hull before grinding. The flour is the product of milling, while further separation yields protein and starch fractions.5

  1. 01 // Source Dry field peas Mature seeds are harvested dry and sent to mills for grinding or further processing.
  2. 02 // Process Hulls removed optionally Taking off the outer hull reduces fiber and raises the proportions of starch and protein.
  3. 03 // Process Seeds ground Milling breaks the peas into flour while keeping their starch and protein together.
  4. 04 // Output Pea flour The dry powder arrives at the kibble plant ready to mix with other ingredients.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

51

% starch

Average starch in dry peas, and flour milled from whole peas keeps all of it. It is an energy ingredient first, protein second.

Starch 43.4-57.5%5
Crude protein 19-28.5%5
NDF 9.1-22%5
Crude fiber 3.7-8.5%5
Sugars 3.6-6.2%5
Ash 2.7-4.9%5
Crude fat 0.7-2.2%5

These are whole dry pea figures, which whole-pea flour matches. Flour from dehulled peas loses the hull, mostly cellulose and xylan, so it runs lower in fiber and higher in starch and protein.5

Why it is in the bag

A main starch for the kibble, plus some protein

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Labels rank ingredients by weight, and pea flour often sits among the first several, so in those foods it is likely a main starch. Dry peas average about 51% starch and 24% protein on a dry basis, and that starch helps form the kibble. Listed past tenth, it would be a smaller contributor. An industry report describes it as lower cost than other pulse flours and names dog food as its largest outlet.2,5,7,8

  1. 01

    Supplies extrusion starch

The starch cooks during extrusion and helps form the kibble. Replacing rice with dehulled pea flour in a dog food trial made the pieces denser and less expanded.2

  2. 02

    Adds plant protein

Pea flour brings about 24% protein on a dry basis alongside its starch. That protein counts in the crude protein figure, which does not tell an owner how much came from meat.5,7

  3. 03

    Meets a market need

An industry market analysis describes pea flour as lower cost than other pulse flours and identifies dog food as its largest outlet. It provides no cost comparison with rice or meat.8

  4. 04

    Changes glucose response

In dog diet comparisons, pea flour or pea based diets produced a smaller or later blood glucose response than rice diets. That is a formulation effect, not a proven health benefit.1,2

How much One 28-day trial fed 58% wrinkled pea flour, an unusually high amount, in lab-made diets the authors say may not represent most commercial diets.3

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

    4. None

Dry peas average about 24% crude protein on a dry basis, ranging from 19 to 28.5%. The crude protein on the bag counts that protein the same as meat protein, and the label does not split the two.5,7

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 36-dog diet comparison found a later glucose response with peas than with rice. A separate 24-dog flour trial found a smaller glucose response. Neither showed a health benefit for healthy dogs.1,2

    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 24-dog trial, more dehulled pea flour increased some fecal fermentation products, but fecal score did not improve and energy digestibility fell. Those measurements do not show improved gut health.2

An 8-dog trial found subtle heart changes after 28 days on lab-made diets with 58% wrinkled pea flour, which the authors say may not represent most commercial diets. The study disclosed funding or in-kind support from a federal pulse research cluster, a pulse company and a pet food company. FDA has not identified pea flour as a cause of DCM.3,4,6

    Pea flour is just filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong

    3. Thin
    4. None

Dry peas average about 51% starch and 24% protein on a dry basis. In a 24-dog trial, replacing rice with dehulled pea flour changed kibble structure, digestion and glucose response. It has clear recipe jobs.2,5

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies starch and protein, and its starch helps form kibble. The useful question is how heavily the recipe relies on pea ingredients, since the protein number alone does not reveal how much came from meat.2,5,7

  2. Q02

Is it the same as pea protein?

    No

Flour retains starch alongside protein. Pea protein concentrate is a further separated fraction. The label lists them separately, but both count when you assess how much of the recipe comes from peas.5,7

  3. Q03

Should I avoid it over DCM?

    Not automatically

FDA has not identified a specific cause of diet associated DCM. A 28-day flour trial used an unusually high amount in lab-made diets its own authors call not representative of most commercial diets. Read the whole ingredient list before judging one pea flour entry.3,6,7

  4. Q04

Why are several pea names listed?

    Separate ingredients

Labels rank each ingredient by its own weight and do not state its amount. Pea flour, peas and pea protein therefore get separate lines even when their combined share is substantial.5,7

Organic pea flour

Matters for your dog A little

Organic Pea Flour

What it means USDA's National Organic Program sets the rules, and AAFCO says organic pet foods must meet its human food standards. Growers cannot use most synthetic substances, genetic engineering, irradiation or sewage sludge, and a certifier inspects them. It says nothing about nutrient content.

For your dog A 2014 meta-analysis of organic versus conventional crops found pesticide residues about 4 times as often in conventional crops, and lower cadmium in organic ones. No dog study has compared organic and conventional pea flour, so a health effect for the dog is unproven.9,10,11
