Palm Oil

A cheap, digestible fat with a forest problem

Palm oil is pressed from the fruit flesh of the oil palm and usually refined into a pale, bland fat. For a dog it supplies calories: dogs digest it almost completely, but it is half saturated fat and short on essential fatty acids.

What it is
Oil pressed from the flesh of oil palm fruit, then usually refined into a pale, bland cooking fat.
Made from
The fleshy fruit of the oil palm
Main job
Energy-dense fat for calories
Typical amount
Not published; one dog trial added 10%
Watch for
Very little omega-3, despite what some labels say
Not the same as
Palm kernel oil or sago palm

Straight answer

Is Palm Oil safe for dogs?

Read it as the fat, then check the omegas

Palm oil usually sits mid to low on the list as the added fat, after the fish or meat. Judge the food by the protein above it. Then check that a fish oil or another omega-3 source appears too, because palm oil supplies almost none. If forest loss matters to you, ask the brand where its oil comes from.

What it is

How it is made

Palm oil is a main crop, not a leftover. The oil palm gives up to 10 times more oil per unit of land than other oilseed crops, which is why it became the world's most important vegetable oil.1,3,4,5

  1. 01 // Source Fresh fruit bunches The fruit's fleshy outer layer is about 50% oil when ripe. The kernel inside goes to a separate oil.
  2. 02 // Process Sterilized Hot water or steam destroys the enzymes that split the oil. In bruised fruit, free fatty acids can reach 60% within an hour.
  3. 03 // Process Digested and pressed Beaters break open the oil cells, then screw presses squeeze out 75 to 80% of the oil.
  4. 04 // Process Refined Crude red oil is refined at about 200°C. All the carotenes are lost here, and contaminants called glycidyl esters form.
  5. 05 // Output Refined palm oil A pale, bland fat, about half saturated, delivered to food plants in bulk.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

50

% saturated

Share of palm oil's fatty acids that are saturated, mostly palmitic acid. That makes it a firm, stable fat but a poor source of essential fatty acids.

Palmitic acid 44%1
Oleic acid 39.2%1
Linoleic acid 10.1%1
Stearic acid 4.5%1
Alpha-linolenic acid 0.4%1
Carotenoids, crude oil 500-700 mg/kg1
Vitamin E, crude oil 600-1,200 mg/kg1

Fatty acids are shown as a percentage of total fatty acids. The carotenoid and vitamin E figures are for crude red oil. Standard refining destroys the carotenes and strips much of the vitamin E, so the oil in pet food carries far less.1,5

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Calories dogs absorb

Fat carries more than twice the energy of protein or starch. In an 11-dog trial, the dogs digested 96.6% of the added palm oil.2

  2. 02

    Cheap oil at scale

The oil palm yields up to 10 times more oil per unit of land than other oilseeds. That makes it the world's leading vegetable oil, cheap and always available.1,7

  3. 03

    A stable fat

About half its fatty acids are saturated and only about 10% are polyunsaturated, the type that turns rancid fastest. That makes it a more stable fat than most seed oils.1

How much Brands do not publish how much they use. One controlled dog trial added 10% palm oil to a dry food.2

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Critics say

Palm oil drives rainforest and wildlife loss

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

IUCN counts 193 threatened species harmed by palm oil expansion. The report adds that replacement oils need up to 9 times as much land, so dropping palm oil moves the damage elsewhere instead of stopping it.7

  2. Brands say

A highly digestible fat for dogs

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a Latin square trial with 11 dogs, the dogs digested 96.6% of palm oil added at 10% of a dry food. That is one small study. Most cooking fats digest well in dogs, so this is no special edge.2

  3. Brands say

Palm oil gives dogs antioxidants and vitamin E

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Crude red oil holds 500 to 700 mg/kg carotenoids, and standard refining destroys all of them. In 8 beagles, antioxidant levels rose only after a large single dose of purified palm tocotrienols, not after any food.1,5,6

  4. Critics say

Refined palm oil carries cancer-causing contaminants

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

EFSA found the highest levels of glycidyl esters in palm fats and called glycidol genotoxic and carcinogenic. Its risk work covers people, levels halved from 2010 to 2015, and nobody has measured a dog dose.4

  5. Brands say

Palm fruit oil is rich in omega-3s

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A supplement maker tells owners this, but alpha-linolenic acid makes up 0.4% of palm oil's fatty acids. Fish oil or flaxseed supplies omega-3. Palm oil barely does.1,8

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No, it's fat

It supplies calories that dogs absorb almost completely, 96.6% in one trial. It does not supply the essential fatty acids or omega-3s a dog needs, so other ingredients have to cover those.1,2

  2. Q02

Is palm oil toxic to dogs?

    No

Food-grade palm oil is an ordinary fat. The warnings come from solidified palm oil lumps washing up on beaches, which dogs eat and get sick from, and from sago palm, a different plant that is truly toxic.2,9,10

  3. Q03

Is it the same as palm kernel oil?

    No

Palm oil comes from the fruit flesh. Palm kernel oil comes from the seed inside, and mills usually extract it separately using expellers or solvents.3
