Niacin
An essential vitamin, not an energy booster
Niacin is a vitamin B3 supplement added in tiny amounts to help a recipe meet a dog's nutritional needs. Dogs use it to release energy from food, but extra niacin in an already adequate diet has no proven benefit.
Role in the food Supporting nutrient- What it is
- The nicotinic acid form of vitamin B3, added to food as a concentrated nutritional supplement.
- Made from
- Chemically synthesized pyridine feedstocks
- Main job
- Supply vitamin B3
- Typical amount
- Parts per million through a vitamin premix
- Watch for
- Keep human niacin tablets away from dogs
- Not the same as
- Niacinamide
Straight answer
Is Niacin safe for dogs?
Read the vitamin line, then check adequacy
Niacin near the end of an ingredient list is doing a small, necessary job. It does not tell you whether the meat is good or whether the food supplies enough of every nutrient. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for your dog's life stage, and skip separate niacin unless your veterinarian has a specific reason.
- Why it is in the food
- Supply vitamin B3

The story
How sick lab dogs revealed the vitamin called niacin
Niacin reached dog food through a dog disease. Black tongue in dogs served as the lab model for pellagra, a human disease of skin rashes, mouth sores and diarrhea. Public Health Service researcher Joseph Goldberger tied pellagra to the diet of the poorest families he studied, built on cornbread, molasses and a little pork fat. In 1926 he showed that black tongue was the canine equivalent of pellagra, which made dogs the test animals in the hunt for the missing nutrient.11,13
The answer arrived in 1937. Euler-Chelpin and Otto Warburg had just found nicotinic acid inside key cell coenzymes, and Conrad Elvehjem's group then showed it cured black tongue in dogs. They also found the vitamin, in its amide form, in active liver concentrates. Medical researchers soon showed it cured pellagra in people. A 1938 follow-up treated 10 dogs with heated or unheated nicotinic acid, an early test of the heat question pet food makers still track.2,11
The name on the bag came from a scare. In 1942, as US flour enrichment with nicotinic acid began, a popular headline read "Tobacco in Your Bread." The American Medical Association's Council on Foods and Nutrition then approved the names niacin and niacin amide for everyday use. Elvehjem drew the vitamin from liver, but today it is made in chemical plants, for example by oxidizing a pyridine compound, and it is produced for both animal feed and human food fortification.12,17
What it is
How it is made
Niacin is manufactured for food and feed fortification, not recovered as a leftover. Chemical producers make a concentrated powder, which premix makers blend with other vitamins so a small dose spreads through the recipe.5,8
- 01 // Source Chemical feedstocks Industrial production starts with compounds derived from ammonia and simple carbon chemicals.
- 02 // Process Build the precursor The chemicals are converted into a pyridine compound used to make nicotinic acid.
- 03 // Process Oxidize and purify Oxidation produces nicotinic acid, which is purified into a crystalline powder.
- 04 // Output Niacin powder The concentrated vitamin reaches pet food makers directly or in a premix with other vitamins.
What is in it

Benefits
What it does for your dog
Each benefit carries the same evidence grade as the claims below.
-
01
Protection from black tongue deficiency
Enough niacin prevents black tongue, the canine form of pellagra that dogs develop on poor diets. Dog experiments in 1937 cured it with nicotinic acid, the same form added to food today.1,2,11

02
Turns food into usable energy
Cells turn niacin into NAD and NADP, coenzymes that release energy from carbohydrate, fat and protein. The support is that the vitamin is essential; no trial shows extra niacin adds energy.3,11

Why it is in the bag
A tiny dose of a vitamin dogs need
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add niacin so every batch meets the dog's vitamin B3 minimum. Grains are a weak supply: corn and wheat hold much of their niacin in bound forms that are poorly absorbed. EFSA rates nicotinic acid an effective niacin source. On most labels it sits near the end, since vitamins are minor ingredients and lists run by weight. It is not filler, but niacin above the minimum adds no proven benefit.3,4,9,18
-
01
Meets the vitamin target
Supplemental niacin lets formulators meet a measured nutrient target even when the vitamin supplied by meat and grain varies or is poorly available.4,8
-
02
Supports normal metabolism
Dogs use niacin to make NAD and NADP, compounds involved in releasing energy from carbohydrate, fat and protein. This is nutritional maintenance, not a stimulant effect.3
-
03
Fortifies at scale
Bulk synthesis yields concentrated powder. Premix makers disperse the small required dose among other vitamins, adding negligible bulk to the finished food.5,8
-
04
Tolerates processing
Pet food formulators use niacin in premixes because it is relatively stable during processing, although they still account for losses before the food reaches the bowl.2,8
How much AAFCO's dog food profile sets a minimum of 13.6 mg of total niacin per kg of dry food for growth and adult maintenance.4
Our read // The claims
What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Niacin prevents deficiency and black tongue
Evidence
- Strong

- Thin
- None
Historic dog experiments agree: nicotinic acid corrected diet-induced black tongue, and a second study treated 10 affected dogs with heated or unheated niacin. This supports adequate intake, not routine extra dosing.1,2

Brands say
Niacin helps dogs use food for energy
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Niacin supplies the precursors of NAD and NADP, which participate in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. AAFCO sets a 13.6 mg/kg dry-food minimum; the mechanism does not show that more niacin improves an adequately fed dog's energy.3,4
-
Brands say
Extra niacin clears itchy skin
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

- Thin
- None
A Cornell dermatology review describes a high-dose niacinamide and antibiotic regimen as ineffective for canine atopic dermatitis. Niacinamide treatment differs from niacin in food, and no cited dog feeding trial shows that extra dietary niacin clears itching.6
-
Owners say
Niacin on the label signals poor ingredients
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
AAFCO describes vitamins as minor ingredients, listed by weight. Its 13.6 mg/kg niacin minimum makes a small entry expected; that entry gives no evidence about the quality of the meat or the food's adequacy.4,9
-
Brands say
Extra niacin gives active dogs more energy
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
The NAD and NADP mechanism explains why dogs need niacin. The 10-dog deficiency experiment tested recovery from black tongue, not performance in healthy dogs; it cannot support an energy boost from extra niacin.2,3
The research
Studies worth knowing
Published research we read for this page, dog studies first.
-
2015 // Drug trial, 4 weeks
Human drug doses of niacin cut blood fats in dogs14
9 obese male dogs; 6 treated, 3 untreated controls
Found. Dogs took 375 mg, then 500 mg a day of extended-release human niacin, about 31 mg per kg of body weight. Triglycerides fell 32% and HDL cholesterol 27%, and no side effects were seen.
What it means. That is a human drug dose, far above anything a food supplies. It says nothing about the niacin line on a kibble bag.
-
2025 // Lab analysis, 31 foods
Plant-based kibble carried less vitamin B3 than meat-based15
31 UK dry dog foods; 17 tested for B vitamins
Found. Only 4 of 17 foods (23%) tested for the full B vitamin panel met every minimum, and every miss fell below the guideline. Plant-based foods had consistently lower B3 than meat-based foods.
What it means. Plant-based kibble ran lowest on B3 when the finished food was tested. A label promise is only as good as the testing behind it.
-
2023 // Lab analysis, canned food
Canning heat left niacin intact in wet cat food16
Canned cat food; no comparable dog food study found
Found. Retort cooking cut thiamin by 30.4% and riboflavin by 18.3%, but niacin was not affected, whether the food was sealed in cans, trays or pouches of two sizes.
What it means. Niacin added before canning appears to reach the bowl intact; thiamin is the B vitamin that heat strips from wet food.
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt supplies a required vitamin at parts-per-million levels. It adds no meaningful protein or bulk, and its place near the end of the ingredient list reflects the small amount needed.4,8,9
-
Q02
Does added niacin mean poor ingredients?
NoMeat and plant ingredients supply some niacin, but their amounts and availability vary. Supplementing it gives the formulator a dependable way to meet the food's nutrient target.4,8
-
Q03
Is niacin the same as niacinamide?
Related formsBoth supply vitamin B3 and serve the same nutritional purpose. They are different chemical forms, and the high doses of niacinamide used in dermatology studies say little about niacin in a food.3,6,8
-
Q04
Should I add a niacin tablet?
NoA complete and balanced food is intended to supply required nutrients. Human niacin tablets deliver a separate, much larger dose and have caused flushing and itching in pets.9,10
