Powdered Cellulose
Useful calorie dilution with a stool tradeoff
Powdered cellulose is purified plant fiber, commonly sourced from wood pulp. It lowers the calories available from a food and increases stool bulk, while supplying little protein and no proven prebiotic benefit.
Role in the food Does a job
- What it is
- Purified cellulose from fibrous plant pulp, broken down into a powder for use in food.
- Made from
- Fibrous plant pulp, often wood
- Main job
- Insoluble fiber for calorie dilution
- Typical amount
- Not published
- Watch for
- Higher amounts increase stool output
- Not the same as
- Beet pulp
Straight answer
Is Powdered Cellulose safe for dogs?
Read it as fiber and check calories
Powdered cellulose low on the list is a fiber addition. If it sits higher, compare the food's calories and fiber with your dog's needs, because more cellulose can mean more stool and less available energy. The ingredient name alone does not tell you its exact plant source.
- Why it is in the food
- Insoluble fiber for calorie dilution
- Watch for
- Excess fiber for the dog

What it is
How it is made
Pulping separates cellulose from fibrous plants such as wood for paper and other products. Further processing turns purified pulp into a fine powder that pet food makers use as concentrated insoluble fiber.1,6,7
- 01 // Source Fibrous plants Wood is a common source, though suppliers also use other fibrous plant materials.
- 02 // Process Made into pulp Pulping removes much of the lignin and other material surrounding the cellulose fibers.
- 03 // Process Purified and broken down The cellulose is purified and mechanically broken into smaller fibers.
- 04 // Output Powdered cellulose The dry fiber powder arrives at the pet food plant for mixing into a recipe.

94.9
% total fiber

Why it is in the bag
A fiber that dilutes calories, not cheap filler
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add powdered cellulose to cut calories. Dogs barely digest it, so it adds bulk with little energy and raises stool output; in one kibble trial stools were also firmer than with beet pulp. It is not cheap bulk: one dog study calls it expensive next to other fibers. Its effects scale with the amount. Labels list ingredients by weight, but amounts are not published, so very low on a list it likely does little.1,2,8
-
01
Lowers available calories
Cellulose replaces digestible material with fiber that dogs use poorly for energy. In a controlled wet food trial, the cellulose diet delivered less digestible energy than the control.2
-
02
Adds stool bulk
Most of the insoluble fiber passes through the gut. Dogs fed cellulose produced more stool than dogs fed beet pulp in a kibble comparison.1,5
-
03
Provides concentrated fiber
The powder raises fiber without adding much protein. A dog food study describes cellulose as more expensive than several agricultural byproduct fibers, so low cost is not its advantage.1,5
-
04
Supports weight control recipes
Manufacturers use it to dilute calorie density. That changes how much energy a serving delivers, but the feeding plan still determines whether a dog loses weight.1,2
How much A controlled kibble trial included cellulose at 10%; the wet food trial dosed powdered cellulose by body weight.1,2

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Brands say

Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Controlled dog trials agree on calorie dilution. In an 8-dog wet food trial, gross energy digestibility was 76.7% with powdered cellulose versus 84.4% without added fiber. That does not guarantee weight loss.1,2

Brands say
Firms loose stools
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

- Thin
- None
In a 12-dog kibble trial, cellulose produced firmer stools than beet pulp. A randomized trial in 19 dogs with acute diarrhea found no significant difference in recovery time. Cellulose is not a proven diarrhea treatment.1,3

Brands say
Keeps dogs full so they lose weight
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

- Thin
- None
A 16-dog study compared a diet with 8.5% cellulose against more fermentable fibers. The fermentable fiber dogs only tended to eat less by the end, a nonsignificant result. Nothing showed cellulose causing fullness or weight loss.4

Feeds beneficial gut bacteria like a prebiotic
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

One tested sample was 92.9% insoluble fiber. In the 19-dog diarrhea trial, added cellulose did not significantly change the measured intestinal microbiota. Calling it a prebiotic promises a benefit the dog data do not show.3,5

Critics say
It is just filler
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

The 8-dog trial measured lower energy digestibility with powdered cellulose, and the kibble trial measured a change in stool output. Those are functional effects. Cellulose supplies little protein, but it has a clear fiber job.1,2,5
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt adds bulk and reduces available calories, both measurable jobs. It supplies little protein, so assess it as fiber. Whether it belongs in a particular food depends on the food's calorie target and your dog's needs.1,2,5
-
Q02
Is it better than beet pulp?
Different jobCellulose is mostly insoluble fiber. In the 12-dog kibble comparison, it produced firmer, heavier stools and less digestible energy than beet pulp. Neither result makes it the better fiber for every dog.1,5
-
Q03
Is it made from recycled paper?
Not specifiedThe feed definition describes processed fibrous plant pulp but does not identify every supplier's raw material. One supplier says its common source is virgin wood pulp. The name on a bag does not tell you whether recycled feedstock went in.6,7
