Water Sufficient for Processing
Useful during cooking, meaningful when retained
This is water added while pet food is made, separate from moisture already in the ingredients. It helps mix the recipe. Water left in the finished food adds moisture without calories; water driven off during drying does not.
Role in the food Does a job

- Water naturally in ingredients
Straight answer
Is Water Sufficient for Processing safe for dogs?
Check finished moisture and calories first
Water high on an ingredient list tells you what went into processing, not how much remains. Read the moisture guarantee and calories, then check whether the food is complete or intended only as a topper. Added water is ordinary; judge the finished recipe.

What it is
How it is made
Pet food plants add water to make ingredients workable during processing. Moist foods retain some of it. Dry food also receives water for mixing, but drying drives that water off.4,7
- 01 // Source Plant water supply The plant draws water from a source suitable for contact with animal food.
- 02 // Process Must be safe Federal rule requires that water touching the food, food-contact surfaces or packaging be safe for that use.
- 03 // Output Processing water Water enters the recipe during mixing; the finished food retains it or loses it during drying.
What is in it
Composition, as fed
100
% water
USDA rounds tap water to 100% water. It supplies moisture without protein, fat or calories of its own.
Why it is in the bag
A processing aid that also sets wet food moisture
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Water lets makers mix and cook the recipe. AAFCO says canned foods typically get added water for processing, while dry foods lose theirs in the dryer. Near the top of a wet food or topper list, it likely makes up much of what is in the can, adding moisture but no protein, fat or calories. It is cheap, but FDA treats water added unnecessarily or in excess as adulteration.3,6,7
-
01
Makes ingredients mix
Water makes dry ingredients workable during mixing. AAFCO says manufacturers add it to dry food even though drying later removes it.7
-
02
Sets finished moisture
Water retained in moist food affects its texture and weight. How much remains depends on the recipe and how much water processing removes.7,9
-
03
Costs little to add
Water is a cheap processing input. It adds weight without protein or fat only when it remains in the finished food.3,6,7
How much No usual recipe amount is published; one dog trial added water to bring a dry diet to 72% moisture.1
Our read // The claims
What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Brands say
Water left in food lowers calories per ounce
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
USDA lists water at 0 calories. Added water lowers calories per ounce only if it remains in the finished food; AAFCO says water added for mixing is driven off when dry food is dried.3,7
-
Vets say
More water in food prevents urinary stones
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
The University of Minnesota reports that raising dietary moisture from 7% to 73% lowered a urine marker of calcium oxalate stone risk in healthy dogs and cats, citing two studies. The marker was measured in healthy animals, not ones with stones, and the page states no prevention trial has been done.10
-
Brands say
Moist food keeps dogs better hydrated
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a 10-dog crossover, dogs took in 88 grams more total water a day on a fresh food than on a dry food. The study did not measure whether the dogs were better hydrated, and the foods differed in more than moisture.2

Owners say
Adding water makes dogs lose weight
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a 46-dog trial, dogs offered excess food compensated for water's calorie dilution by eating more of the hydrated diet. Over the 28-day comparison, they gained weight faster than dogs offered dry food.1

Owners say
Water high on the list means wet food
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

- None
AAFCO says ingredients are listed by weight when the recipe is formulated and that water added to dry food is driven off during drying. A high position shows how much entered the process, not how much remains.7,8
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoWater has a processing job: it helps ingredients mix. It contributes no protein, fat or calories. Judge the food by its finished moisture, calories and nutritional adequacy statement.3,7,9
-
Q02
Does this mean wet food?
NoAAFCO says dry food also receives water during mixing, then loses it during drying. The phrase describes an input to the recipe. The moisture guarantee describes the finished food.7,9
-
Q03
Why is water high on the list?
Added weightIngredients are listed by weight as they enter the recipe. Water can rank high even if drying later removes it, so its position does not tell you the finished moisture.7,8
