Beef Heart

Real beef protein, no proven heart boost

Beef heart is the muscular heart of cattle, sold fresh, frozen or dried for pet food. It contributes animal protein and taurine. The fact that it comes from a heart does not mean it protects your dog's heart.

Straight answer

Is Beef Heart safe for dogs?

Read it as meat, then check the food

Beef heart high on the list is a meaningful beef ingredient; farther down, it is a smaller addition. Compare the finished food's protein on a dry matter basis and check its nutritional adequacy statement. Treat claims that this ingredient protects your dog's heart as marketing, not a demonstrated benefit.

What it is

How it is made

Meat processors separate hearts when cattle are slaughtered. Hearts are edible offal with markets in human food and pet food, so selling them recovers value from tissue outside the main cuts.8,9

  1. 01 // Source Cattle hearts Hearts are separated during slaughter and handled as edible offal.
  2. 02 // Process Fat may stay AAFCO's meat definition allows the fat, sinew and blood vessels that come with the muscle to stay on.
  3. 03 // Process Kept cold Edible offal is segregated and chilled before further processing or sale.
  4. 04 // Output Beef heart The heart, with or without its attached fat and vessels, reaches the food maker as named beef tissue.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

82

% protein

Protein makes up about 82% of dry weight in one USDA raw-heart entry. Fresh heart still carries substantial water.

Crude protein 82.3%6
Crude fat 14%6
Ash 4%6
Taurine 3,390-3,531 mg/kg3
Phosphorus 9.2 g/kg6
Iron 175 mg/kg6
Calcium 0.6 g/kg6

The USDA values describe heart with its fat, veins and connective tissue counted as waste. Pet food heart may keep that fat, so fat can run higher. Another database and the taurine samples also vary.3,6,7,9

Why it is in the bag

A main beef protein when listed near the top

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

AAFCO counts heart muscle as meat, and labels rank ingredients by weight. Fresh heart carries a lot of water, yet it still supplies real protein. Brands often list it among the first few ingredients, where it is likely one of the food's main protein sources; far down the list, it is a smaller addition. Selling hearts as edible offal, a major pet food ingredient, also helps processors recover value from the animal.6,8,9

  1. 01

    Adds beef protein

Heart muscle contributes animal protein. Fresh heart also adds water, so its place on an ingredient list does not reveal its share of protein in the finished food.6,9

  2. 02

    Uses edible offal

Pet food gives processors a market for hearts outside the main meat cuts. Revenue from edible offal helps spread the cost of processing the animal.8

  3. 03

    Adds taurine and iron

Measured heart samples contain taurine, and the USDA entry records iron. The amount delivered to a dog depends on the recipe and its processing.3,6

How much One cooked dog food recipe lists 22.5% fresh beef heart, but a usual amount across dog foods is not published.12

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Beef heart supplies substantial animal protein

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The USDA raw-heart entry contains 27.27% protein as sold, about 82% on a dry matter basis. That is a real protein contribution; the ingredient list does not disclose how much heart the finished food contains.6,9

  2. Owners say

Beef heart can trigger beef allergies

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A review identified beef reactions in 102 of 297 dogs with documented food reactions. Heart is beef tissue, so a dog with a diagnosed beef allergy should avoid it. Those counts do not describe all dogs.4,9

  3. Brands say

Taurine in heart prevents canine heart disease

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Three fresh heart samples averaged 652 mg/kg taurine as sold. A study measured blood taurine in 65 dogs and heart-tissue taurine in 33 of them, but every test diet used chicken. Beef heart has not been tested for heart disease prevention.1,3,13

  4. Brands say

CoQ10 in beef heart improves heart health

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A food review lists 113.3 mg/kg CoQ10 in fresh beef heart. In a placebo-controlled trial involving 43 dogs with valve disease, purified CoQ10 did not improve measured heart structure. The trial did not feed beef heart.2,5,13

  5. Critics say

    Beef heart is just filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

AAFCO includes heart muscle in its meat guidance, and the USDA raw entry records 27.27% protein as sold. It has a nutritional job. Its presence alone cannot tell you whether the whole food is balanced.6,9,11

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Heart muscle supplies beef protein. Processors also earn money by selling it, but that does not erase its nutritional job. Check the finished food's analysis and nutritional adequacy statement to judge the whole recipe.6,8,11

  2. Q02

Is it meat or an organ?

    Both

A heart is an organ anatomically, and the tissue that pumps blood is muscle. AAFCO includes heart muscle under meat in its ingredient guidance. Beef liver is a different tissue.9

  3. Q03

    Can it replace beef liver?

    No

Heart and liver are different tissues with different nutrient profiles. Substituting one for the other changes a recipe's balance. For a main diet, rely on the food's nutritional adequacy statement rather than an organ name.6,11

  4. Q04

    Should I feed it raw?

    No need

Raw heart brings a raw-meat handling risk. FDA testing found Salmonella in 15 and Listeria in 32 of 196 commercial raw pet foods. A cooked, complete food supplies a main diet without that particular raw-food exposure.10,11
