Carob Powder

A sweet flavor, not a health treatment

Carob powder is dried, ground carob pod pulp, sometimes roasted for a cocoa-like aroma. It adds sweetness, flavor and color to dog food without cocoa's toxic stimulants. Its fiber and minerals are real, but no study shows a health benefit from carob powder in dog food.

Made from
Carob pods, usually with seeds removed
Main job
Sweet, roasted flavor

What it is

How it is made

Processors separate carob seeds to make locust bean gum, a food thickener. The sweet pulp around the seeds remains. Drying and grinding give that pulp another market; roasting deepens its color and aroma.2,4

  1. 01 // Source Ripe carob pods The harvested pods contain sweet pulp around hard seeds used to make locust bean gum.
  2. 02 // Process Seeds separated Processors crush the pods and remove the seeds, leaving the sugary pulp.
  3. 03 // Process Dried or roasted The pulp is dried; roasting it produces a darker color and more cocoa-like aroma.
  4. 04 // Output Ground carob powder The pulp is ground and sieved into a powder for flavor and color.

% sugars

The average total sugar in carob pod meal without seeds. Its sweetness comes from the pulp, even when no sugar is added.

Total sugars 33.8-51%4
Neutral detergent fiber 29.1-39.1%4
Lignin 7.8-24.7%4
Crude fiber 7.1-12%4
Crude protein 3.4-6.3%4
Calcium 1.5-8.8 g/kg4

These ranges describe pod meal without seeds. Variety and growing conditions change the pulp, while roasting changes its sugar content and flavor. Locust bean gum comes from the seed instead.2,3,4

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds sweet roasted flavor

The pulp contains sugar, mostly sucrose. Roasting develops a cocoa-like aroma, giving manufacturers that flavor without using cocoa.2,4

  2. 02

    Adds brown color

Roasting darkens carob powder. It also contributes fiber, though the ingredient list does not reveal whether enough was added to affect stool.2,4,7

  3. 03

    Uses separated pulp

The seeds supply commercially valuable gum. Selling the dried pulp as powder gives processors another outlet for the same crop.2,4

How much A trial fed carob flour only as part of a multi-ingredient supplement to 15 dogs with diarrhea, not as a stand-alone ingredient in ordinary dog food.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Carob offers chocolate flavor without chocolate toxins

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A chemical study found theobromine and caffeine below detection in tested carob pulp and powders. FDA identifies both as chocolate hazards for dogs. Pure carob is a sensible cocoa substitute; check a finished treat's other ingredients.3,5,6

  2. Brands say

Carob powder stops diarrhea in dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A randomized trial enrolled 30 dogs with acute diarrhea, but the carob was inside a supplement containing several other ingredients. It cannot show whether carob helped, and it did not test carob powder in ordinary food.1

  3. Brands say

Carob antioxidants protect a dog's health

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A roasting experiment measured increased antioxidant activity in carob powder in the laboratory. That measures the powder, not protection in a dog. The dog trial tested a mixed supplement and measured no carob-specific antioxidant effect.1,2

  4. Brands say

Carob adds calcium that strengthens bones

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Deseeded pod meal averages 4.9 g calcium per kg of dry matter, a real but modest amount. The cited trials did not test carob powder itself for a bone or calcium benefit, and the amount manufacturers add to kibble is not published.4

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It has a clear job: adding sweetness, roasted flavor and color. The pulp also contains fiber. Judge the recipe around it, since the ingredient list shows its order by weight, not its exact amount.2,4,7

  2. Q02

Is carob the same as chocolate?

    No

ASPCA lists carob pods as non-toxic to dogs. Tested carob powders had no detectable theobromine or caffeine, the stimulants that make cocoa dangerous. Check a finished treat for cocoa or chocolate.3,5,6

  3. Q03

    Will it firm loose stools?

    No proof

Carob contains fiber, but the dog diarrhea trial gave it with other ingredients. That trial cannot show what carob powder alone does to stool. Do not treat an ingredient on a bag as diarrhea care.1,4
