Dried Kelp

An iodine source with narrow dog evidence

Dried kelp is harvested brown seaweed dried and milled for feed. Its clearest job in dog food is supplying iodine. Dental results come from a measured rockweed treat, while a small dog trial found no change in the fecal measures it tested.

How it is made

Harvesters collect brown seaweed for food, fertilizer and animal feed. Fresh fronds hold much water and spoil quickly, so processors mill and dry them into a storable ingredient.5

    A controlled dog trial found less plaque and calculus with a daily rockweed treat. That gives manufacturers a claim to discuss, although an unspecified amount in food was not tested.1

    Seaweed harvests supply food, fertilizer and feed markets. Drying and milling let pet food makers buy a storable ingredient instead of handling wet fronds.5

    No kelp trial shows improved thyroid function in dogs already receiving adequate iodine. In an 18-puppy study, diets high in potassium iodide lowered thyroxine and enlarged thyroid glands. That study tested iodide, not kelp.3,6

    No

    It brings iodine and other minerals, plus fiber. The dog study found no change in the fecal measures it tested, so do not buy a gut claim on that evidence. Kelp is not a meaningful protein source.2,4,5

    Not proven

    A daily rockweed treat reduced plaque buildup after professional cleaning. The study used a measured serving and was funded by its manufacturer. A food label does not tell you whether its kelp matches that serving.1,7

    A complete food has an iodine target, and kelp adds iodine that varies with its source. Extra kelp makes total intake harder to judge. Ask for the food's iodine analysis first.5,6
