Fish Meal

Useful fish protein with an undisclosed source

Fish meal is whole fish or fish processing trimmings cooked, pressed, dried and ground. It supplies concentrated protein to kibble. The generic name does not tell you which fish were used, and the remaining oil is no guarantee of an omega 3 benefit.

Role in the food Supporting nutrient
Fish Meal
What it is
A dry, ground protein ingredient made by cooking and pressing whole fish or fish processing trimmings.
Made from
Whole fish or fish processing trimmings
Main job
Concentrated animal protein
Typical amount
Dog trials tested 10% and 20% fish meals
Watch for
Fish allergy or poorly stored meal
Not the same as
Fish oil

Straight answer

Is Fish Meal safe for dogs?

Check the food beyond its fish meal

Fish meal high on the list is a meaningful protein source, but the name hides the species and the bag does not reveal the meal's ash, freshness or EPA and DHA content. Read the food's protein and fat analysis. If omega 3s matter, ask the maker for finished-food EPA and DHA figures.

What it is

How it is made

Fish meal plants process whole fish caught for meal and oil, along with heads, frames and trimmings left by seafood plants. Cooking and pressing separate oil and water; drying leaves a protein meal that ships without refrigeration.5

  1. 01 // Source Fish and trimmings Whole small fish or seafood processing remains, including heads and frames, arrive at the meal plant.
  2. 02 // Process Cooked Heat firms the proteins and frees water and oil from the fish tissue.
  3. 03 // Process Pressed A press separates the solid cake from liquid that is further divided into fish oil and stickwater.
  4. 04 // Process Dried and milled The cake is dried and ground; concentrated stickwater is often added back before drying.
  5. 05 // Output Fish meal A dry powder or granule supplies protein and minerals when weighed into a kibble recipe.

74.8

% protein

The average for Feedipedia's high-protein fish meal category. Meals with more bone and ash can contain substantially less protein.

Crude protein 57.4-81%5
Ash 6-33.8%5
Crude fat 2.5-15.3%5
Calcium 0.9-81.9 g/kg5

These ranges describe a high-protein category, not every fish meal sold. A lower-protein category has more ash on average. Fish species, the share of heads and frames, freshness and drying conditions all matter.5,6

Why it is in the bag

A backup protein source, rarely the food's base

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Makers add fish meal for concentrated animal protein, plus marine minerals and some leftover fat. In many foods it sits after the main protein and carbohydrate ingredients. US labels list ingredients by weight, so at that spot it likely backs up the main protein rather than carrying it. When it is near the top of the list, it is a main protein source. It is not filler at either spot, and a senior dog trial used it in place of poultry by-product meal.1,5,8

  1. 01

    Adds animal protein

Removing much of the water and oil concentrates fish protein. In a senior dog trial, a diet with white fish meal had similar nutrient digestibility to a poultry meal control.1,5

  2. 02

    Uses seafood remains

Meal plants turn heads, frames and trimmings from seafood production into a storable feed ingredient. Supply also depends on fisheries, and price can limit its use.5

  3. 03

    Supplies marine nutrients

Remaining fat and bone bring marine fats and minerals alongside protein. Their amounts change with the fish and processing, so fish meal alone does not tell you a food's EPA and DHA content.5

How much Dog tests used 10% salmon meal in a palatability diet and 20% white fish meal in a senior diet.1,2

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Fish meal provides digestible animal protein

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A senior dog trial replaced poultry by-product meal with 20% white fish meal and found no change in apparent nutrient digestibility. It supports fish meal as usable protein, though one tested meal cannot represent every supplier.1,5

  2. Brands say

Fish meal gives dogs a healthier coat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

We found no dog trial testing fish meal on coat outcomes. The closest, a 45-dog, 4-week trial, fed fish meal plus fish oil together and measured only a blood omega 3 marker, never skin or coat.3

  3. Brands say

Fish meal makes kibble taste better

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a dog preference test, a diet with 10% salmon meal was eaten about as much as the chicken control. Salmon protein hydrolysate increased intake, but that is a different ingredient.2

  4. Brands say

Fish meal is hypoallergenic for sensitive dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Fish triggered reactions in 5 of 297 dogs with reported food reactions in a research review. That does not estimate allergy risk for all dogs, but it rules out treating fish meal as safe for every allergic dog.4

  5. Critics say

    Fish meal is cheap filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Feedipedia's high-protein category averages 74.8% crude protein on a dry matter basis. Fish meal has a clear protein job, while price and supply can limit its use. Quality varies; filler is the wrong criticism.5

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies animal protein, and dog diets have used it in place of poultry meal without losing apparent nutrient digestibility. The useful question is how much fish protein and ash the supplier's particular meal contains.1,5

  2. Q02

    Does generic mean poor quality?

    Not necessarily

The label may say fish meal without naming a species. That leaves its origin unclear, but says nothing by itself about freshness or protein quality. A named fish gives you more sourcing information, not a lab result.5,7

  3. Q03

    Is fish meal fish oil?

    No

Pressing removes much of the oil before fish meal is dried. Some fat remains, but the amount varies. Check the finished food's EPA and DHA figures if marine omega 3 intake matters to you.5
