Mackerel Broth

Fish flavor and moisture, mostly water

Mackerel broth is the liquid produced when mackerel or its parts are cooked. It adds moisture and fish flavor to wet food, along with some dissolved protein. Its weight on an ingredient list does not tell you how much mackerel flesh the food contains.

What it is

Straight answer

Is Mackerel Broth safe for dogs?

Read broth as liquid, then check the fish

Ingredient order reflects weight, and broth carries plenty of water. Look for mackerel or another named protein elsewhere on the list, then check the finished food's protein guarantee and nutritional adequacy statement. Do not buy it for an unmeasured omega-3 or coat claim.

What it is

How it is made

Mackerel broth is the liquid produced when mackerel is cooked, carrying material released from the fish into the surrounding water. A dog food recipe lists it as its own ingredient, separate from mackerel flesh.2,5

  1. 01 // Source Mackerel and parts Whole fish or usable mackerel parts supply the material that is cooked to make the broth.
  2. 02 // Process Cooked Heating the fish releases water and some soluble protein and fat into the surrounding liquid.
  3. 03 // Process Liquid collected The liquid is separated from the cooked fish solids; a studied fish broth also had its fat removed.
  4. 04 // Output Mackerel broth The collected liquid goes into a wet recipe as a line separate from mackerel flesh.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

71

% protein

Protein in the dry solids of one studied fish broth. Its water content means the wet liquid supplies far less protein by weight.

Total protein 71.1%2
Crude ash 13.5%2
Chlorides 8.6%2
Crude fat 3.8%2

These calculated values come from a degreased, unspecified fish broth used in a pig study, not commercial mackerel broth, so treat them as an approximation of broth composition rather than a measurement of this product.2

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds cooking liquid

Broth supplies liquid for a wet recipe and carries material released by cooked fish. A dog food label lists it separately from the fish itself.2,5

  2. 02

    Adds fish flavor

A manufacturer promotes broth for taste. Dog tests of other fish ingredients do not isolate mackerel broth, so its effect on appetite remains unmeasured.1,5

How much A published dog stew lists mackerel broth without giving its percentage, so that label cannot supply a usual inclusion amount.5

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Broth adds water to a dog's meal

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

One measured fish broth was 10.49% dry matter, so nearly 90% of its weight was water. Adding broth increases a meal's moisture. That arithmetic does not demonstrate a health benefit for a dog already drinking enough.2

  2. Brands say

Fish broth makes picky dogs eat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 12-dog test, diets containing different fish hydrolysates and oils drew nearly equal intake, 49.9 versus 50.1. Those were concentrated fish ingredients in kibble, not mackerel broth, so mackerel broth's effect on intake is not measured by the cited trial.1,5

  3. Brands say

Omega-3s in broth improve skin and coat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A degreased fish broth contained 0.4% fat as fed. In a dog trial, fish hydrolysate plus added fish oil raised blood omega-3 levels without improving coat scores. Neither result shows a coat benefit from broth.1,2

  4. Brands say

Mackerel broth supplies substantial fish protein

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The measured fish broth contained 7.46% protein as fed despite protein dominating its dry solids. AAFCO's dry matter protein standard does not reveal how much broth a recipe uses. Its contribution cannot be inferred from the ingredient name.2,3,4

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies liquid and fish flavor, useful jobs in wet food. Its water also counts toward ingredient weight, so a prominent label position does not mean it contributes as much protein as mackerel flesh.2,4,5

  2. Q02

Does it count as mackerel meat?

    No

Broth is cooking liquid with dissolved fish material. Mackerel listed separately is the fish itself. Read both lines, then check the finished food's protein guarantee and nutritional adequacy statement.3,4,5

  3. Q03

Can a fish-allergic dog eat it?

    Avoid it

Fish broth contains fish protein. A review identified fish as a trigger in 5 dogs with proven food reactions. Keep mackerel broth out of a fish-free elimination diet.2,6

An ingredient on its own tells you very little. What matters is how much of it there is and where it sits in the list. That is why we weigh the top five rather than reacting to any single name further down. Back to the wiki
