Mackerel

Real fish protein with an uncertain omega payoff

Mackerel is an oily fish used in dog food for protein and marine fat. It contains EPA and DHA, but its place on an ingredient list cannot tell you how much of either reaches your dog's bowl.

Straight answer

Is Mackerel safe for dogs?

Check the species and finished food

Mackerel is a useful source of fish protein and fat, but a high place on the list reflects its weight before cooking. Check the other proteins and oils around it. For an omega-3 claim, ask for EPA and DHA amounts in the finished food. For mercury, ask which mackerel species is used.

What it is

How it is made

Fishing fleets catch schooling mackerel for several markets. Its oily flesh spoils quickly, so processors chill or freeze the catch before preparing it. Pet food makers receive fish cold and cook it in the recipe.6,9

  1. 01 // Source Caught mackerel Fleets catch schooling fish; the common name covers several species.
  2. 02 // Process Chilled or frozen The catch is cooled promptly because mackerel spoils quickly without temperature control.
  3. 03 // Process Prepared for use Processors supply whole fish or prepared flesh, depending on the product being made.
  4. 04 // Output Cold mackerel Fish arrives refrigerated or frozen for mixing and cooking with the other pet food ingredients.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

42.7

% protein

Protein in ground Atlantic mackerel starting material from one processing study, taken in the fall fat-storage season. The same batch carried slightly more fat than protein.

Crude protein 42.7%4
Crude fat 45.2%4
Ash 5.6%4

These are figures for one Atlantic mackerel starting material, not a fixed recipe value. Species and season matter: mackerel builds up fat heavily before its fall migration, so the same fish tests leaner at other times of year.4

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds animal protein

Whole mackerel contributes protein and fat. In dry kibble, much of its water leaves during cooking, so its listed weight overstates its share of the finished food.4,9,10

  2. 02

    Supplies marine fats

Mackerel flesh contains EPA and DHA. A maker can use it to supply those fats, but the ingredient list gives no amount in the finished food.5,10

  3. 03

Caught in quantity by purse seine

FAO names purse seining as the leading method for catching mackerel in quantity off the west of Scotland in late summer, supplying fleets with schooling fish for processing.6

How much One published commercial recipe lists 14% dehydrated mackerel; that figure does not describe a typical amount of fresh mackerel.11

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

    4. None

Ground Atlantic mackerel measured 42.7% protein on a dry basis, while cooked Atlantic mackerel flesh contains 1,203 mg EPA plus DHA per 100 g. Neither figure measures the finished dog food.4,5

One 22-dog trial tested a fish oil product, not mackerel, alongside an allergy drug for 16 weeks. Coat score improved within the fish oil group but was not compared directly with the placebo group, and mackerel itself was not fed.1,11

A blinded trial assigned 77 dogs with osteoarthritis to fish oil or corn oil. After 16 weeks, its main pain measures showed no significant difference between groups. It did not test mackerel.2

FDA puts Atlantic and Pacific chub mackerel among its lower mercury choices for people, but king mackerel in its highest mercury group. The species makes this blanket claim false.7

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Whole mackerel supplies protein and fat. What the label cannot tell you is its final share of a dry food: fresh fish carries water that leaves during cooking.4,9,10

  2. Q02

Does mackerel first mean most protein?

    Not necessarily

Ingredients are listed by weight, and fresh mackerel includes substantial water. Its position tells you what went into the recipe by weight, not which ingredient supplies the most protein after cooking.4,10

  3. Q03

    Should I worry about mercury?

    Check the species

FDA's human fish guidance places Atlantic and Pacific chub mackerel in a lower mercury group and king mackerel in its highest group. Ask the maker which species the food contains.7
