Magnesium Proteinate

A magnesium source without a proven absorption edge

Magnesium proteinate is magnesium bound to amino acids or protein fragments. Manufacturers add small amounts to help balance a dog's mineral intake. The name does not show that dogs absorb it better than other magnesium sources.

Feed mineral makers combine a soluble magnesium salt with amino acids or partly broken down protein. The resulting mineral powder gives food formulators a measured source of magnesium for small additions to a recipe.2,5

Makers add it to bring the recipe's magnesium up to target, since complete dog food has a set magnesium minimum. One supplier's powder is 10% magnesium and is meant for 0.01 to 0.1% of feed, so a pinch does real mineral work and adds no bulk. It often sits low on the list, which runs by weight, so it is likely a top-up beside meat and other minerals rather than the food's main magnesium supply.3,5,7

    One commercial powder profile lists 10.53% magnesium on a dry matter basis. AAFCO's dog food profile sets a 0.06% dry matter minimum for the complete food. This ingredient supplies magnesium; the whole recipe determines whether that minimum is met.3,4

    The cited trial did not test magnesium proteinate. It chelated iron, manganese, zinc and copper, not magnesium, and on that organic-mineral diet magnesium digestibility was significantly lower, 87.72% versus 90.72% on the control, p = 0.018.1,6

    A brand page makes this claim with no citation. A separate 8-beagle trial did find calcium and potassium digestibility significantly higher on a glycine-chelated mineral diet, 65.98% versus 39.02% for calcium and 97.49% versus 93.69% for potassium, but that diet chelated iron, manganese, zinc and copper, not magnesium, so it is not evidence for magnesium proteinate.1,6

    The ingredient list tells you magnesium proteinate was added, but not how much magnesium the finished food contains. Ask the manufacturer for its finished-food magnesium analysis if your dog needs a controlled intake.7,8
