Corn Starch-Modified

A canning thickener, not a nutrient source

Modified corn starch is purified corn starch treated with heat, acid or approved chemicals so it survives canning. In wet food it thickens gravy and binds chunks, and the dog gets easily digested calories from it, little else.

What it is
Corn starch, already purified from the kernel, then treated so it thickens and holds up under canning heat.
Made from
Starch from wet-milled field corn
Main job
Thickens gravy
Typical amount
Not published for corn starch in pet food
Watch for
Loose stools reported with heavily hydroxypropylated grades
Not the same as
Genetically modified corn

Straight answer

Is Corn Starch-Modified safe for dogs?

Read it as a gravy thickener and move on

In a can it normally sits below the meat and water, doing a texture job. Judge the food by the meat above it and the protein on a dry matter basis. If it ever sits near the top of a list, starch is padding the recipe, and that food deserves a harder look.

What it is

How it is made

Corn wet millers split kernels into starch, germ, bran and gluten. Plain starch is unsuitable for most uses, so refiners treat much of it physically, chemically or with enzymes before it is sold.1,2,3

  1. 01 // Source Field corn Corn supplies over 80% of the world's starch, and the US produces about half of it.
  2. 02 // Process Steeped and milled Kernels are cleaned, steeped and ground, and the germ, bran and protein layer are removed.
  3. 03 // Process Starch washed out The flour is mixed with water to wash out gluten, and the starch milk is dewatered in hydrocyclones.
  4. 04 // Process Modified Treated with acid, bleach, or cross-linking and substituting agents within FDA caps, such as acetyl groups at 2.5% at most.
  5. 05 // Output Modified corn starch A dry powder of about 95% starch on a dry basis, shipped to make gravy and bind wet food.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

95

% starch

Starch averages 95% of the dry weight. It is a carbohydrate ingredient, with protein, fat and fiber each under 2%.

Starch 84.6-99.9%3
Crude protein 0.2-1.7%3
Crude fat 0.1-0.9%3
Ash 0-0.6%3
Crude fiber 0.1-0.3%3
Calcium 0.1-0.2 g/kg3

These are native maize starch figures. Modification changes little on paper: FDA caps acetyl groups at 2.5% and residual phosphorus at 0.04 to 0.4%, depending on which phosphate treatment is used.1,3

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Holds gravy through canning

Canned food is sterilized in a retort, and the gravy starch must survive that heat. A starch maker's patent says highly hydroxypropylated waxy corn starches are often used in canned gravy for stability.6

  2. 02

    Binds formed food

Pregelatinized starch thickens instantly in water and binds well in extrusion and pelleting.2

  3. 03

    Cheap starch at scale

Corn supplies over 80% of the world's starch and the US makes about 51% of it, so modified corn starch comes from the largest starch supply there is.2

  4. 04

    Digestible calories

Cooked starch digested at over 98% in a 36-dog trial, so the thickener also counts as energy. It adds no protein worth counting.3,7

How much No published figure exists for corn; one patent uses a modified cassava starch at 2 to 7% of the gravy, a minor share of the can.6

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Modified starch is safe for dogs to eat

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Two 13-week beagle trials, 8 dogs per group, fed a hydroxypropyl starch at up to 10% of the diet with no effects on blood, organs or growth. EFSA set no numerical intake limit for people. The dog data is old and small.4,5

  2. Brands say

Hydroxypropyl starch gives pets loose stools

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A starch maker's patent quotes pet food makers linking highly hydroxypropylated grades to loose stools. The cited beagle trials did not report on stools: beagles fed 10% of a related starch for 13 weeks showed no compound-related effects, though stools were not mentioned.5,6

  3. Critics say

    Dogs can't digest starch

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 36-dog trial of six extruded diets, starch digestibility topped 98% in every one, corn included. Dogs carry gene changes for starch digestion that wolves lack. Cooked starch is among the most digestible things in the bowl.7,8

  4. Owners say

    Modified means genetically modified

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Modified describes what happens to the extracted starch: acid, bleaching or cross-linking under FDA rules. The corn itself is a separate question; about 92% of US corn acres grow herbicide-tolerant seed.1,9

  5. Critics say

    Chemical treatments leave harmful residues

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

FDA caps each treatment, for example propylene chlorohydrin residue at 5 ppm. EFSA found no genotoxicity concern, and rats fed up to 31,000 mg per kg of body weight a day showed no relevant harm.1,4

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No, a thickener

It has a job: keeping gravy thick through canning heat and storage. It brings calories, about 95% starch on a dry basis, but almost no protein, fat or minerals. It is a processing aid, not nutrition.3,6

  2. Q02

Why does it show up in wet food?

    Canning heat

Canned food is sterilized in a retort, and the gravy starch has to survive that heat and stay stable in storage. Starches also bind extruded feeds, so wet food is not their only pet food use.2,6

  3. Q03

Is it the same as eating corn?

    No

Wet milling strips out the germ, bran and gluten, so the starch carries under 2% protein on a dry basis and almost no fat or fiber. The dog gets cooked starch, not corn's protein.2,3
