Minerals

Necessary nutrients, but the label tells little

“Minerals” usually refers to a blend of mineral salts added to balance a dog food recipe. Dogs need the nutrients it supplies, but the word does not tell you which minerals are present or whether the finished food has the right amounts.

Role in the food Supporting nutrient
What it is
A blend of mineral compounds added in small amounts to help balance a dog food's mineral supply.
Made from
Manufactured mineral salts and carriers
Main job
Balances essential minerals
Typical amount
About 0.1% in one published kibble recipe
Watch for
Extra calcium for growing large breed dogs
Not the same as
Ash

Straight answer

Is Minerals safe for dogs?

Judge the finished food, not this word

“Minerals” low on the list is ordinary because a premix is used sparingly. Read any compounds in parentheses, then find the nutritional adequacy statement for your dog's life stage. For a growing large breed dog or a dog needing a controlled mineral intake, ask for the finished food's calcium and phosphorus analysis.

The story

How calcium and copper research reshaped dog food minerals

Mineral premixes became routine once feeding standards set minimums. Starting in the 1970s, AAFCO nutrient profiles, built on National Research Council recommendations, required a minimum amount of copper in dog food. Gaps still turned up. A 1988 review of 13 dogs seen in 1981 and 1982 with crusting skin disease found all had eaten corn and wheat dry foods that missed NRC recommendations. Every case cleared on a balanced diet, and the condition is now known as zinc responsive dermatosis.12,16

Great Dane research shows what too much calcium does to a growing dog. A team including H.A. Hazewinkel fed puppies extra calcium until 17 weeks of age. Without matching phosphorus, the dogs developed rickets. With both minerals raised, growth slowed and lesions resembling osteochondrosis appeared, and those had only partly healed after 10 weeks on a normal diet. AAFCO's growth profile also sets a calcium to phosphorus ratio range, not just a calcium minimum.5,14

The latest turning point is copper. AAFCO's 1997 profiles required copper sulfate or chelates in premixes, forms far better absorbed than the copper oxide used before. A 2018 study of 546 stored dog livers found copper levels had climbed since the 1980s, though the authors could not prove food caused it. A February 2021 JAVMA viewpoint urged a rethink, and in March 2023 AAFCO announced its 13 member expert panel found too little data to set a copper maximum.12,13

What it is

How it is made

Premix makers combine mineral compounds because each is needed in a small amount and must spread evenly through a large food batch. This is a formulated blend, not a processing leftover.1,6,10,11

  1. 01 // Source Mineral compounds Suppliers provide compounds such as calcium carbonate, zinc sulfate and sodium selenite.
  2. 02 // Process Measured The maker weighs each compound against the mineral targets set for the finished recipe.
  3. 03 // Process Blended with carrier A carrier helps disperse tiny amounts of trace minerals throughout the dry blend.
  4. 04 // Output Mineral premix The blended powder reaches the food plant ready for one measured addition to the recipe.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

21.6

% calcium

Calcium in one published trace mineral premix after dry matter conversion. It reflects that formula's carrier, not a standard for every premix.

Calcium 21.6%1
Zinc 88,600 mg/kg1
Iron 39,200 mg/kg1
Copper 11,300 mg/kg1
Manganese 5,880 mg/kg1
Iodine 1,590 mg/kg1
Selenium 312 mg/kg1

These figures describe one trace premix, not all products labeled “Minerals.” They were converted from its published analysis using 0.66% moisture. Mineral forms, carriers and separate additions change the mix.1,10

Benefits

What it does for your dog

Each benefit carries the same evidence grade as the claims below.

  1. 01

    Normal bone growth in puppies

Calcium and phosphorus build the skeleton, and the ratio matters. Great Dane trials showed puppy bone mineral tracks dietary levels early on, while excess calcium disrupted bone development.4,5,14,15

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None
  2. 02

Healthy skin when diets are balanced

Zinc supports normal skin. Dogs fed dry foods that missed nutrient recommendations developed crusting skin disease that cleared on a balanced diet. The evidence is a case series, not a controlled trial.5,16

Why it is in the bag

Tiny amount, but it supplies nutrients dogs need

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

A formulator adds a mineral premix when meat and plant ingredients fall short of the recipe's mineral targets, such as AAFCO's adult zinc minimum of 80 mg/kg dry matter. It usually sits low on the list because labels rank ingredients by weight and a premix is used sparingly, 0.10% in one published kibble. Low weight does not make it filler: the trace minerals are concentrated. The bare word still cannot show whether the finished food is balanced.1,5,6

  1. 01

    Fills mineral gaps

Meat and plant ingredients contribute minerals, but a formulator adds specific compounds when the recipe needs more to meet its intended nutrient profile.5,6,11

  2. 02

    Spreads small doses

Trace minerals are used in tiny amounts. Blending them into a premix makes it easier to distribute them evenly through a production batch.10,11

  3. 03

    Simplifies factory weighing

One premix addition replaces separate handling of several compounds. Industry suppliers sell that approach for its simpler purchasing, storage and weighing.10,11

How much One published kibble trial used a trace mineral premix at 0.10% of the recipe, with separate calcium and phosphorus salts.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Added minerals supply nutrients dogs need

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The arithmetic is sound: AAFCO's adult profile sets a zinc minimum of 80 mg/kg dry matter, and a published dog recipe included a trace mineral premix. The finished food's mineral levels still matter more than the premix name.1,5

  2. Brands say

Chelated minerals give dogs a shinier coat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In one 90-day trial of 43 senior dogs, groups fed amino acid complexes grew hair faster than controls. The mineral doses also differed, and most authors worked for the supplier. It does not prove a benefit from every chelated premix.3

  3. Brands say

Soluble mineral salts are always absorbed better

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

An 8-dog trial found phosphorus digestibility of 26% with the more soluble mix versus 20% with the other mix. Calcium digestibility did not improve, and the trial measured no health benefit.2

  4. Owners say

More calcium makes puppy bones stronger

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A review of feeding trials found excess calcium disrupted skeletal development in some growing dogs, especially when phosphorus did not rise with it. AAFCO also specifies a calcium to phosphorus ratio for growth diets. More is not better.4,5

  5. Owners say

Minerals on the list prove the food is complete

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A published recipe included a 0.10% trace premix plus separate calcium and phosphorus sources. One ingredient entry cannot show the finished diet's nutrient balance. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for the dog's life stage.1,8

The research

Studies worth knowing

Published research we read for this page, dog studies first.

  1. 2018 // Lab analysis of stored livers

Liver copper in dogs rose sharply over three decades12

    546 dogs, archived liver samples

Found. Among breeds not known for copper disease, the share of dogs with liver copper above 300 μg/g rose from 28% in 1982 to 1988 to 49% in 2009 to 2015. Prone breeds rose from 48% to 71%.

What it means. Copper buildup is not only a problem for at-risk breeds. If your dog has liver disease, ask your vet about copper intake.

  2. 2000 // Feeding trial, 3 diets

Extra calcium caused rickets and slowed growth in Great Danes14

Growing Great Dane puppies, 3 groups

Found. Puppies fed high calcium without extra phosphorus until 17 weeks developed rickets. Those fed both minerals high grew slowly and showed osteochondrosis-like lesions that had only partly healed after 10 weeks on a normal diet.

What it means. Feed a complete growth food as labeled and skip calcium supplements for large breed puppies. Damage from excess may not fully reverse.

  3. 2002 // Feeding trial, 3 diets

Puppy bone mineral followed diet calcium until about 6 months15

32 Great Dane puppies from 4 litters

Found. Bone mineral content rose with the calcium and phosphorus in the food. Differences between diet groups grew until 6 months of age, then faded, with body composition no longer different at 12 months.

What it means. The first 6 months are when a puppy's mineral intake shows up most directly in its bones, so food choice matters most then.

  4. 1988 // Review of case records

Skin disease cleared in 13 dogs after a diet change16

13 dogs fed generic dry foods

Found. All 13 dogs had crusting skin lesions after eating corn and wheat foods that missed NRC recommendations. All recovered fully on a balanced diet. The condition is now recognized as zinc responsive dermatosis.

What it means. A food's mineral balance shows up on the dog. Choose a food with an adequacy statement for your dog's life stage.

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Mineral compounds supply nutrients a dog needs, even though the premix contributes little weight. Its job is to adjust the recipe's mineral levels, not to add bulk.5,6

  2. Q02

Does “Minerals” name a standard mix?

    No

Premixes are formulated for particular recipes. AAFCO's model labeling format shows “Minerals” followed by the compounds in parentheses; European labels may use “minerals” alone as a category name. The bare word does not identify a formula.7,9

  3. Q03

Should I pay more for chelates?

    Not automatically

A supplier-authored trial found coat differences in senior dogs, but mineral amounts differed between groups. That result cannot tell you whether a food using chelates is better for your dog than another complete food.3

  4. Q04

How do I check the balance?

    Read adequacy

Find the nutritional adequacy statement and match its life stage to your dog. If you need specific calcium or phosphorus figures, ask the maker for the finished food's analysis; the premix entry cannot provide them.5,8
