Ferrous Sulfate

A useful iron adjustment, not an energy boost

Ferrous sulfate is an iron salt added in small amounts when a recipe needs more iron. Dogs use iron to make hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. Adding more does not improve a healthy dog whose food already supplies enough.

How it is made

Steel plants often use sulfuric acid to remove surface oxides before finishing steel. Iron enters the spent acid as ferrous sulfate, which producers recover, crystallize and sell for uses including animal feed.7,8

    Meat and other ingredients bring some iron to a recipe. A measured addition lets the maker adjust the finished food when those ingredients do not supply enough.2

    Supplies blood building iron

    Dogs need dietary iron to make hemoglobin. In a controlled study, withholding iron lowered dogs' hemoglobin; restored dietary iron plus injected iron corrected the induced deficiency.1

    Draws on industrial supply

    Steel processing produces ferrous sulfate at scale for several markets, including animal feed. Adding only what a recipe needs also avoids unnecessary formulation cost.2,8

    The monohydrate feed reference lists its iron content, and the dried grade has a set ferrous sulfate range. That lets a formulator calculate how much to add.3,7

    In a Mars-authored trial, 22 adult dogs ate diets with or without added ferrous sulfate for 26 weeks. Iron related blood measures did not differ. The researchers did not measure energy or exercise performance.2

    Concentrated iron products cause poisoning when swallowed in excess. In a 26-week feeding trial, dogs given additional ferrous sulfate maintained normal iron related blood measures. That trial was not an overdose test.2,11

    No

    It supplies iron, which dogs need to make hemoglobin. The monohydrate reference contains no protein or fat; its purpose is mineral fortification. Whether a particular recipe needs added iron depends on its other ingredients.2,3,6

    Why is it low on the list?

    Small dose

    Ingredients appear in descending order by weight. Mineral additions are usually minor ingredients, so ferrous sulfate belongs near the end. Its position does not tell you the finished food's total iron content.9

    Will it treat my dog's anemia?

    No

    An ingredient line is not a diagnosis or treatment plan. Iron deficiency in dogs rarely starts with the diet and commonly follows chronic blood loss. The cause needs to be identified before iron treatment is chosen.10
