Manganese Sulfate
A small mineral addition with a real job
Manganese sulfate is a manufactured salt added to supply manganese. Dogs need that mineral for normal enzyme and cartilage chemistry. Its place on the ingredient list does not reveal the finished food's manganese level or promise joint relief.
Role in the food Supporting nutrient- What it is
- A mineral salt blended into dog food in small amounts to supply manganese.
- Made from
- Manganese oxide or carbonate and sulfuric acid
- Main job
- Supplies trace manganese
- Typical amount
- One dog trial added 10 mg manganese per kg
- Watch for
- Accidental overdose from concentrated supplements
- Not the same as
- Manganese oxide
Straight answer
Is Manganese Sulfate safe for dogs?
Read it as a mineral, then move on
Manganese sulfate near the end of the ingredient list is a small mineral addition. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for your dog's life stage, then judge the food by its main ingredients and nutrient information. The sulfate line alone gives neither the finished manganese level nor a reason to expect joint relief.
- Why it is in the food
- Supplies trace manganese
- Watch for
- Concentrated supplement overdose

The story
How a livestock feed salt ended up in kibble
Manganese mattered to farmers long before it reached pet food. It was first recognized as a plant nutrient. A 1926 rat study by McHargue showed mammals need it too, and a 1928 swine study by Skinner and coworkers followed. Later work found the reason: the enzymes that make chondroitin sulfate, a building block of cartilage, depend on manganese. Young livestock short of it were born weak, with leg deformities and fragile bones.8
Feed rules turned that science into a short list of approved salts. Federal regulations name manganese sulfate, along with manganous oxide, manganese carbonate, manganese chloride and several others, as trace mineral sources generally recognized as safe in animal feed at levels consistent with good feeding practice. Dog food makers use the same salts. Grains and animal ingredients already carry some manganese, and the added salt tops the recipe up to its target.9,11
WikiVet reports that there is no information on manganese deficiency in dogs. What is known about their requirement comes instead from studies of how much manganese bitches' milk contains and how much milk puppies drink. Values for adult maintenance, pregnancy and nursing rest on similar estimates. So the dog figure starts from mothers' milk, not from a shortage anyone has recorded in a dog.11
The salt is also a traded commodity, and in 1995 its supply became a federal case. In an investigation brought by American Microtrace Corporation, the US Commerce Department ruled, effective October 5, 1995, that manganese sulfate from China was being sold in the United States at less than fair value. It set dumping margins of 32.48% for one exporter and 362.23% for all other Chinese sellers, a rare public look at an ingredient most owners never think about.6,10
What it is
How it is made
Chemical plants make manganese sulfate for feed and fertilizer, usually by reacting a manganese compound with sulfuric acid. The resulting wet material is dried into a powder or granules for mineral premixes.6
- 01 // Source Manganese compound Manganese oxide or carbonate supplies the metal used to make the salt.
- 02 // Process React with acid Sulfuric acid reacts with the manganese compound in an agitated vessel to form manganese sulfate.
- 03 // Process Dry the slurry The wet material is dried into powder or sprayed into granules and dried further.
- 04 // Output Feed mineral Fine powder or granules are supplied to premix makers, who blend them with other minerals.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
32.49
% manganese
The manganese share of pure manganese sulfate monohydrate. A small amount supplies a trace mineral rather than bulk nutrition.
The manganese share depends on how much crystal water the salt holds. FAO lists the monohydrate at about 32% manganese and the tetrahydrate at about 25%, so the form changes how much salt a premix needs.5
Benefits
What it does for your dog
Each benefit carries the same evidence grade as the claims below.
-
01
Normal cartilage and bone building
Enzymes that make chondroitin sulfate, a cartilage building block, need manganese. Shortages cause weak bones and leg deformities in young livestock. No deficiency has been described in dogs, so this support comes from other species.8,11

02
Strong newborns from well fed mothers
Manganese shortages in livestock produce weak newborns with poor coordination. Dog requirement estimates come from the manganese in bitches' milk, but no dog breeding trial has tested the salt itself.8,11

03
A dependable manganese intake
The salt adds a measured amount on top of what grains and animal ingredients already carry. In a 30 food lab test, every dry food beat the minimum, but the study did not single out the sulfate.11,12

04
Normal enzyme and energy chemistry
Manganese takes part in fatty acid synthesis, amino acid and energy metabolism, and the antioxidant system. That support rests on the mineral being essential. No dog study has measured a gain from adding the sulfate.8

Makers add manganese sulfate to make sure the recipe reaches the AAFCO manganese minimum for its life stage, on top of what grains and animal ingredients already carry. Federal rules list it among the trace mineral salts recognized as safe in feed. It sits near the end because labels go by weight and the dose is milligrams per kilogram. It adds no protein, fat or bulk; its whole value is the manganese.4,5,7,9,11
-
01
Meets mineral targets
A complete recipe needs enough manganese from all its ingredients. AAFCO lists dry matter minimums of 5.0 mg/kg for adult maintenance and 7.2 mg/kg for growth and reproduction.4
-
02
Blends into premixes
Feed manufacturers buy the powder or fine granules through premix makers, who combine small, measured amounts with other minerals before the food is made.6
-
03
A soluble commercial source
Manganese sulfate dissolves more readily than manganese oxide. A US trade report found sulfate costlier per unit of manganese, though its tiny dose made it a small part of a feed's cost.6
How much In a 20-dog feeding comparison, the sulfate premix added 10 mg manganese per kg of diet, measured as manganese rather than salt.1

Manganese sulfate in kibble poisons dogs
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

One pug developed fatal liver failure after swallowing about 100 joint tablets containing 500 mg manganese ascorbate alongside other compounds. That overdose warrants care with supplements; it does not show that manganese sulfate in formulated food is poisonous.3
The research
Studies worth knowing
Published research we read for this page, dog studies first.
-
2024 // Case report, 2 dogs
Two dogs poisoned by a human joint supplement overdose13
2 adult mixed breed dogs from one household
Found. The dogs swallowed about 75 capsules of a human joint supplement holding 2,062 mg of manganese between them. One died of acute liver failure within an estimated 36 to 48 hours. The other recovered by day 44 after treatment.
What it means. The danger comes from concentrated supplements swallowed in bulk, not from the small amount of manganese sulfate blended into a complete food.
-
2020 // Lab analysis, 30 foods
Thirty dry dog foods all cleared the manganese minimum12
30 dry adult dog foods bought in Szczecin, 17 cereal free and 13 with cereal
Found. Every food held more manganese than the European minimum, and 10 of the 30 (33%) held more than 10 times it. Two insect protein foods passed the legal maximum, with most of their manganese coming from the insects, not added minerals.
What it means. Manganese shortfalls in dry dog food look rare. The biggest outliers came from a protein source, not from added minerals.
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt supplies manganese, which a complete dog diet needs in a small amount. It contributes no meaningful protein, fat or bulk. Judge it as a mineral addition rather than one of the recipe's main ingredients.4,5
-
Q02
Why is it near the end?
Tiny doseIngredients are listed by weight. Manganese is needed in milligrams per kilogram of food, so its source belongs near the end of a typical ingredient list. That position does not make the mineral unimportant.4,7
-
Q03
Should I add more manganese?
Usually noA healthy dog eating complete and balanced food has no label-based reason for an extra manganese supplement. Check the nutritional adequacy statement before adding minerals, and keep concentrated supplements out of reach.3,7
