Canola Meal

Useful plant protein with a fiber limit

Canola meal is what remains after oil is removed from canola seeds. It adds protein and fiber to kibble, and dog trials feeding 5 to 20% of the diet, including a year-long test of an older rapeseed meal, found normal intake and digestibility.

Is Canola Meal safe for dogs?

Read the protein sources around canola meal

Canola meal supplies real plant protein and fiber. Check where it sits beside named animal proteins and other plant protein ingredients. Dog trials have fed 5 to 20% of the diet without problems; a listing near the top still deserves a closer look at the food's full protein mix.

What it is

How it is made

Oil mills crush canola seeds for cooking oil and other uses. Removing the oil leaves a meal rich in protein and fiber that feed makers buy as a separate ingredient.3,4

  1. 01 // Source Canola seeds Oil mills use seeds bred to contain less erucic acid and fewer glucosinolates than older rapeseed varieties.
  2. 02 // Process Pressed The seeds are cleaned, flaked, heated and pressed to remove part of their oil.
  3. 03 // Process Oil removed Most commercial meal undergoes solvent extraction to remove more oil, followed by heating to remove the solvent.
  4. 04 // Output Canola meal The remaining dry meal reaches the kibble plant with substantial protein and seed hull fiber.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

41

% protein

The average for solvent extracted canola meal. That protein raises a kibble's total protein figure, while the meal also brings considerable fiber.

Crude protein 38-49.1%4
Neutral detergent fiber 21.2-45.4%4
Crude fiber 8.3-15.9%4
Lignin 3.5-10.1%4
Crude fat 1.2-5.5%4
Ash 6.3-10.1%4

These ranges describe solvent extracted meal. How much hull stays in the meal changes its fiber and protein; pressed meal retains more oil, so its composition differs.3,4

Why it is in the bag

A real protein helper, not the food's base

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

When it appears mid-list, after a named meat meal and grains, it supports the protein rather than carrying it. Labels list ingredients by weight, so at that spot it likely adds a useful share of protein: solvent extracted meal averages 41% protein on a dry matter basis, with hull fiber alongside. Makers also use it because it is a leftover of oil milling. Listed near the top, it would carry more of the protein load.3,4,5

  1. 01

    Adds plant protein

Canola meal contributes protein to the recipe and its guaranteed analysis. It works alongside other proteins; the bag's crude protein figure does not identify which ingredient supplied it.4,5

  2. 02

    Adds seed fiber

Seed hulls remain in the meal after oil extraction. They bring fiber along with the protein, which formulators must account for when deciding how much meal to use.3,4

  3. 03

    Uses an oil leftover

Oil production creates meal at scale. Feed buyers compare its protein and price with other meals, although lower protein concentration and shipping affect that comparison.3,6

How much A 2024 adult dog trial fed it at 5% and 10% of the diet, and a 1976 kennel trial fed 20% rapeseed meal for a year.1,7

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Canola meal adds usable protein to dog food

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a short trial with 8 dogs per diet, whole diet protein digestibility stayed above 84% when canola meal replaced pea protein at 5% or 10%. The trial did not measure canola protein alone.1,4

  2. Brands say

Dogs like canola meal as much as pea protein

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In 2-day, two-bowl tests with 30 dogs per comparison, the canola diets were eaten about as readily as the control. One short test of chicken based recipes cannot show that every canola meal or dog will respond alike.1

  3. Owners say

Canola meal harms a dog's thyroid

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A pig trial found thyroid changes as meal rose from 0 to 40%. In dogs, a 1976 study fed 20% rapeseed meal for a year and found no abnormal thyroid values. Modern canola carries fewer glucosinolates still.2,3,7

  4. Critics say

Canola meal is just cheap filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Solvent extracted meal averages 41% protein on a dry matter basis. Diets containing up to 10% had similar digestibility and stool scores in a short dog trial. Price matters to manufacturers, but the meal has a nutritional job.1,4,6

  5. Critics say

More canola meal always lowers food quality

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 1976 study fed dogs 20% rapeseed meal for a year with no intake or reproduction problems, and nitrogen digestibility ran 75 to 85%. The 2024 trial saw no penalty at 10%. Fiber still matters in the full recipe.1,4,7

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies substantial protein plus fiber. Manufacturers also have a cost reason to use this oil mill leftover, so its presence says nothing by itself about how much animal protein the food contains.3,4,6

  2. Q02

Is it the same as canola oil?

    No

The oil is removed to make meal. Solvent extracted meal is mainly protein and fiber, with little fat left. A canola oil line on the same bag is a separate ingredient.3,4

  3. Q03

Will it upset my dog's stomach?

    Unlikely

In a 2024 trial, diets with 5% or 10% canola meal gave stool scores like the control. A year-long 1976 kennel trial at 20% rapeseed meal reported no acceptance problems. Individual dogs still vary.1,7

  4. Q04

    Does it replace animal protein?

    In part

In the dog trial, canola meal replaced pea protein, while the diets remained chicken based. On a bag, read canola meal beside the named animal and other plant proteins to judge the mix.1,5
