D-calcium pantothenate is a powdered source of vitamin B5 added in tiny amounts. It helps a complete food meet a dog's vitamin needs. Its presence does not show that the food will boost energy or improve the coat.

Vitamin makers produce this powder for food and feed. The feed additive EFSA reviewed is chemically synthesized; a patented fermentation route, shown here, grows the vitamin from sugar and beta-alanine and then separates it from the broth.4,5

Vitamin B5 is essential, and a complete dog food has to meet a minimum of 12 mg per kg of dry matter. Meat and grains supply some of it. Makers add this powder to top up that supply so the formula reliably meets the minimum. One published dog diet added 6 mg per kg. It sits near the end of labels because lists run by weight, not because it is filler.3,6,8
