Eggs

Good protein, with no need to chase it

Eggs are hen egg whites and yolks added fresh or as a processed ingredient. They contribute digestible protein and fat, and one dog test found an egg coating improved food preference. Their value still depends on how much the recipe uses.

Straight answer

Is Eggs safe for dogs?

Welcome the egg, then judge the recipe

Look at where eggs sit on the ingredient list and whether the label names a fresh or dried form. Fresh egg includes water in its listed weight; dried egg is more concentrated. Check the food's protein figure and the ingredients around the egg. Avoid it if your dog has an egg allergy.

What it is

How it is made

Egg grading leaves some cracked eggs unsuitable for sale in the shell. Egg plants can process those eggs, separating the contents from the shells and supplying liquid egg or a dried ingredient.4,5

  1. 01 // Source Hen eggs Egg graders may send cracked eggs to an egg products plant for processing.
  2. 02 // Process Shells removed The plant breaks the eggs and keeps the edible white and yolk separate from the shells.
  3. 03 // Process Liquid or dried Egg contents may remain liquid or have their water removed to make a dry ingredient.
  4. 04 // Output Egg ingredient The dog food plant receives egg contents as a liquid or dry product, depending on the recipe.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

53

% protein

A tested spray dried whole egg was about half protein on a dry basis. It also supplied substantial fat.

Crude protein 52.8%1
Crude fat 29.7%1
Ash 3.9%1

These are measurements from one spray dried egg sample, not a published range. A different balance of white and yolk changes the protein and fat shares; shell residue raises ash.1,5

Why it is in the bag

A real second protein, rarely the main one

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Makers add egg for digestible animal protein and fat, and for taste: in one beagle trial, adding spray dried egg raised the food's protein digestibility, and dogs preferred an egg coated food. When it sits behind the main meat, it supports the protein rather than carrying it. Listed fresh, egg is about 76% water and labels rank by weight, so far down the list it likely adds little.1,7,8

  1. 01

    Adds digestible protein

Egg supplies animal protein. In a small feeding trial, adding spray dried egg increased the measured protein digestibility of the finished dog food.1

  2. 02

    Improves food preference

Dogs chose the food coated with spray dried egg more often in one short test. Manufacturers can use that taste to make a recipe more appealing.1

  3. 03

    Uses a processing stream

Some eggs unsuitable for shell sale are processed instead. That gives manufacturers another egg supply route, though the evidence does not show that egg is a cheap protein.4

How much One dog trial tested diets with 4, 8 and 12% spray dried egg; those are tested amounts, not a typical recipe range.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Egg protein is easy for dogs to digest

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

An 8-beagle feeding trial estimated 91.3% protein digestibility for its spray dried egg ingredient. That supports digestibility for the tested powder, but one study cannot rank every egg product against other proteins.1

  2. Brands say

    Eggs make kibble taste better

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 20-dog choice test, dogs preferred food coated with 4% spray dried egg. The result applies to those particular foods in a short test, not to every dog or egg recipe.1

  3. Brands say

    Egg choline sharpens dogs' minds

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Eggs contain choline, but choline content is not a memory test. The 8-beagle egg trial measured digestion and stool, not cognition. It provides no evidence that eating eggs sharpens a dog's mind.1,3

  4. Owners say

Raw eggs are healthier than cooked eggs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The 8-beagle feeding trial found processed egg protein digestible; it did not compare raw and cooked eggs. FDA identifies raw egg products as a Salmonella risk for pets and people, so this claim has no support here.1,6

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Egg supplies protein and fat. In a dog trial, adding dried egg increased diet digestibility. Its position still matters: an egg ingredient near the end contributes less than one near the start.1,7

  2. Q02

    Are eggs the best protein?

    Not proven

The dog trial found its spray dried egg highly digestible, but it did not compare egg with every whole food. Treat eggs as useful protein and judge the complete recipe.1

  3. Q03

Are eggs safe with chicken allergy?

    Check the diagnosis

A reaction to chicken meat alone does not show that egg is a trigger. A review counted egg and chicken separately; egg caused reactions in 11 of 297 dogs with documented food reactions. Follow your dog's elimination and challenge results.2

  4. Q04

    Does dried egg count more?

    Per pound, yes

Fresh egg brings water into its listed weight. Dried egg has much of that water removed, so the same listed weight contributes more egg solids. Ingredient order alone cannot tell you the finished food's egg content.1,5,7

Fresh eggs

Matters for your dog A little

Fresh Eggs · Fresh Whole Eggs

What it means AAFCO's feed term fresh covers an ingredient that has not been frozen, cooked, dried, rendered or hydrolyzed, has no added salt or preservatives, and is kept only by refrigeration. It describes the egg as delivered to the maker, not the finished food, and says nothing about the hens.

For your dog A fresh egg is about 76% water, so it is weighed wet and ranks higher on the list than the same egg solids would as dried egg. Most foods cook it anyway, and we found no study showing fresh egg feeds a dog better than dried.5,7,8

Egg

What it means The singular form of the same ingredient: the white and yolk of hen eggs. We found nothing in pet food rules that treats Egg and Eggs differently, and neither word tells you whether the egg went in fresh or dried.

For your dog Nothing changes for the dog. To judge how much egg the food holds, look for words like fresh or dried and check where the egg sits on the list.7
