Useful minerals with a real dose question

Sodium phosphate is a family of salts that supplies sodium and phosphorus to dog food. It can also steady acidity during processing. High soluble phosphate diets shifted mineral regulation in short dog studies, so the food's total phosphorus matters.

How it is made

The phosphate industry turns phosphate rock into phosphoric acid. Reacting purified acid with a sodium compound makes sodium phosphate. The resulting crystals or solution give food formulators a measured mineral addition.7,8

  2. 02 // Process Acid purified Phosphoric acid is refined before manufacturers use it to make food grade phosphate salts.

Makers add it to bring phosphorus and sodium up to target. The anhydrous monosodium form is about a quarter phosphorus by weight, so a small amount sitting mid-list or lower still adds a real mineral dose. FDA also lists it as a pH control agent and emulsifier salt, so in some foods it likely does a processing job too. It adds no calories.4,8,9,10

    Adds measured phosphorus

    A formulator can add phosphorus without adding more meat or bone. In a small dog trial, a soluble phosphate premix yielded greater apparent phosphorus digestibility than a less soluble premix.2

    Controls acidity

    Phosphate salts buffer changes in acidity. FDA lists pH control as a technical use for monosodium phosphate, though the ingredient line alone does not identify its purpose in a particular food.8,9

    Supplied at scale

    EPA reported 11.5 million kg of US monosodium phosphate production for commercial sale in 2019 across uses beyond pet food. It is a manufactured mineral input, not a specialty extract.7

  4. 04

    Adds sodium too

    Phosphorus is not the salt's only contribution. Anhydrous monosodium phosphate also carries sodium, which a formulator must count when balancing the finished food.4

How much In an 18-day dog trial, monosodium phosphate supplied phosphorus to a diet measuring about 1.8% total phosphorus on a dry matter basis.1

    In an 8-dog trial, apparent phosphorus digestibility was 26% with a soluble monosodium phosphate premix versus 20% with a less soluble phosphate premix. Calcium sources also changed, and greater absorption alone shows no health benefit.2

    The 18-day trial in 8 healthy beagles changed mineral regulation but did not demonstrate kidney disease. Dogs with existing kidney disease need controlled phosphorus intake; the study does not set a harmful dose for ordinary foods.3,11
